Trenton, N *7., Feb. 4.—Judge
Dixon, of the New Jersey Supreme
Court., in chartring the jury in the case
of a policeman who arrested two persous
wi.hout warrants, overturned all prece-
fipn s on the subject, both in this State
end in New York. It. created much
favorable comment from the lawyers and
the judiciary. The de ision is likely to
be one of overwhelming importance in
Now Jersey, since he charged plainly
vhai arrests are not to be made without
warrants for any offense, not actually
occurring in the presence of tho officer.

Officer Powers'stepped into the saloon

wealthy citizen a man of property and
respectable, and. could have beeu found
at any time, yet he was locked up over
night only to be discharged by the re
corder in the morning, while the officer
knew the recorder was within call at the
time of the arrest.
Judge Dixon added : “It is with
difficulty I ean suppress my indignation,
all hough I ask the jury to suppress
theirs. There is no excuse for putting
,jMich an indignity on any citizen. His
pockets were emptied, ile was locked
up. I know the practice, but know no
jaw which gives any officer the right to
put his haul in any man’s pocket uutil
