(I he (True (f iiizcn. The Survival of the Fittest. WAYNESBORO,O.V., MAY 11, 188.1. g.&r t lie Town prohibitory law don’t pAflvibit very extensively. Wo lmvo hoard littlool'tho star route trials farce lately. We suppose the matter will be indefi nitely postponed. If Senator lloynton failed to be made governor lie can console him self with bis luck in the possession of a wife who has $50,000 in her own right. itr It is reported that slavery still exists among the Indian tribes, and the negroes are afraid to go into Indian Territory, lost they should be re-enslaved. &r We have heard considera ble about Postmaster-General Gres ham being bis own “boss,” and bow be was performing miracles in re forming the mail service. There is a line opening in this part of Ar thur’s domain for him to put in a lot of his good work. 0F Gov. Boynton was married last Monday week to Miss Harris, of Walton county. The ceremony was performed by Rev. C. A. Evans, assisted by Rev. G. A. Nunnally, both of Atlanta. The bride is said to be 45 years old and worth $50,000 in her own right. We congratulate you, governor. tjik i.votsi.vmiK. &r A German claims to have invented a safe, which in addition to the customary walls and doors of steel, has an attachment that on be ing touched, immediately flares an electric light on the scene, and at the same time uncovers a prepared plate on which the burglar’s photo graph is taken. The Legislature met at 10 o’clock, Wednesday morning, and promptly organized with Senator Pollhill in the chair as President of the Senate pro tern. Governor Boynton sent in a short message relating to the only business which the Constitu tion allowed them to transact du ring this called session—the count ing of tin' votes and the inaugura tion of thi' governor elect. At 12 o’clock, the Senate entered the Representative hall, and after the* appointment of three tellers, in joint session proceeded to count the votes, which numbered 25,(180—the smallest vote ever cast for a gov ernor of the State. On Thursday morning at 10 o’clock, the’Legislature reconvened, and at 11 o’clock the Senate again entered the hall of Representat ives. President of the Senate, Polldll, an nounced that the General Assembly was tin'll in joint session for the purpose of inaugurating lion. Hen ry D. McDaniel Governor of Geor gia. Governor McDaniel then entered, leaning upon the arm of Governor Boynton. Reaching the Speaker’s stand Governor McDaniel deliv ered his inaugural address, which was short, pointed and appropriate. Chief Justice Jackson then admin istered the oath of office, after which President Polhill committed to him the Great Seal of the State, and declared Henry D. McDaniel Governor of Georgia. The business being completed, the Legislature adjourned to meet again in July. IT Is another place we publish an account of the robbery of MaJ. Wasson, a United States army pay master, of $2-1,000. The robbery statement was made by Wasson, himself. It now turns out that he was not robbed at all, but made the statement to cover his short accounts with the government. St mmm fw The affairs of the Freed man’s Bunko soon to be wound up. The Comptroller of the Currency announces that he will wind up the business by declaring a final divi dend of seven per cent. The de positors who are living will get (12 per cent, all told, of their depos its. The Republican party is re sponsible for this disgraceful swin dle of the Southern negro. IT Some of the prominent ^Northern Republican journals have for some time past been engaged in agitating and advocating the coloni zation of the negroes in some Wes tern territory. By this scheme it is hoped to reduce Southern Repre sentation in Congress, and at the same time place the negro where that party can control his vote and swindle him with greater facility. The visible supply of Ameri can cotton in domestic and foreign ports, is now nearly a half a million balPs in excess of the visible supply of the same description of cotton at the same time last year, and the weekly receipts are still as large as the weekly consumption. This makes it certain that the price of the staple will range very low this fall, and those farmers who are expecting to pay for their supplies with the poceeds of their cotton crop, may yet wish they had taken the advice of the newspapers, and planted so as to have secured an abundance of provisions. ir Commissioner Raum, since his retirement from the Internal Revenue Bureau, has extensively advertised himself as an attorney to collect for manufacturers and dealers in tobacco the rebate al lowed by the new law. Senator Vance, of North Carolina, warns the tobacco men that if they employ Raum for this service they will gratuitously pay him large fees,— lie says that no attorney will be needed, as the government will furnish blanks by tilling up which the tobacco men can make their own claims just as well as Raum would do It, and with just as good results. @ ® <$><$>. O <$><$> <3> <$» liiM & vr The relations between the United Htates and Great Britain, on account of the late Irish American Congress, held in Philadelphia, are reported to wear uu unsettled ap pearance, and have evidently been the subject of a lively diplomatic correspondence, England cannot afford to make war upon the United Htates, as that step would free Ire land and lose lor North American provinces. Ko far as the Irish American Congress Is concerned, let England remember that her tyr anny has exiled more Irish to for eign countries than Ireland now contains, and each one of these and their descendants stand ready to aid the mother country at the first op portunity that offers a chance for success, England has adopted the rope and the gallows to awe the Irish into subjection; let the Irish blow her into the Irish Hea with dynamite or any other power that will effect the purpose of destruc tion, It Is but a fair offset.
