The prospect for the fanner, upon
whom every other business de
pends and hinges is a gloomy one in
whatever light it is viewed. The
unprecedented drouth has cut off
all crops, leaving our farmers in
many instances unable to pay their
present year’s debts, and with little
provisions to go on next year. The
extreme calculations which we
have heard for the cotton crop of
this section, is live-eighths the low
est and two-tldrds the highest, and
while neither of these estimates
may he exactly correct, it is demon
strated fact that the crop is very
short. The corn crop, in compari
son, is reported better, and there are
said to be more killing hogs In the
county than there has been since
the war. Neither are these short
crops confined to Burke county or
to Georgia—were it so our neigh
bors would have to spare—but the
same cry comes from every part of
the whole country. Under the
pressure of these circumstances,
our people must light the tires of
economy and prepare as best they
can to meet the difficulties which are
upon them. This we believe can
be done in a great degree, neither
do we consider the case a hopeless
one. But to meet the exigencies of
the short crops, our farmers must
plant early and largely of every
thing that will sustain man and
beast, when our generous soil and
climate will quickly repair the dam
age thi> terrible drouth has wrought.
Once again, and with the impress
ive indorsement of the circumstan
ces under which they- now find
thetaselves, we are about to venture
another paragraph of "newspaper
advice” to our farmers. There has
probably never existed a subject
upon which the entire Press of the
.State has been so unanimous as
in the condemnation of the all cot
ton policy to the exclusion of pro
vision crops adopted and so persist
ently followed by our farmers since
the war. But, it is objected, these
editors are not farmers. Of course,
they are not; but it is their bus
iness to watch the commercial ef
fect of all commodities, and their
opinions upon this subject are sound,
because they are founded upon
actual observation. With this ex
cuse, then, we beg our farmers to
abandon the "all cotton” policy, and
hereafter be prepared to meet the
calamity of any future short crop
which not only may, but will come.
But INlobody Killed.
