Emory Speer haft made j
his name a stench in the nostrils of
the people of his native State.
A dispatch from Columbus,
Ohio, brings the information that
Judge Pendleton has been defeat
ed by Judge Payne for United
Slates Senator. Judge Pendleton
has been a prominent Ohio politi
cian for many years, and was as
piring to the first place on the
Democratic ticket this year for
President. His defeat for Senator
will, however, eclipse all his chan
ces for that position, and the prob
abilities are that he will now fade
from public view.
In the late controversy be
tween Major Campbell Wallace, of
the State Railroad Commission,
and President Raoul, of the Central
railroad, President Raoul had the
evic ^’llt advantage. We are op
posed to monopolies of any and all
kinds, and we are equally opposed
to a censorship, such as the State
Railroad Commission has grown to
be, and which assumes to dictate
how private property and private
interests shall be managed. It is
a positive interference with person
al rights. All the railroads in the
State are working under charters
granted by the Legislature, grant
ing them certain rights and privi
leges, and when any railroad com
pany shall transcend the rights
granted or abuse its privileges, its
charter is forfeited, and may be
annulled by the granting power.—
This it seems is sufficient without
subjecting these great industries to
the present severe dictatorship.—
If the Legislature has granted too
many and too large rights and priv
ileges to the railroads m their char
ters, then the Legislature and not
the railroads is to blame, and it
stultifies itself when it appoints a
commission to undo work which it
has deliberately transacted. Rail
roads are just as much private
property as merchandise, planta
tions or work shops, and State in
terference with the one is as unjust
as interference with the other.

Intelligence from Washington
indicates that there will l>i> no tariff
revision during the present session
of Congress. The tariu' question is
one with which neither party wish
es to meddle upon the eve of a
great Presidential campaign, which
is now immediately before us.—
Any material change of the tariff
would have the ('(feet to disrupt all
party organization, and the strange
alliance of Democrats and Republi
cans would be found together. The
manufacturers of all parties advo
cate a high protective tariff, while
the people of all classes and parties
—the consumers—are beginning to
recognize the fact that they are
daily being robbed by the govern
ment for the pleasure and profit of
the few. It may probably be well
enough, under the circumstances,
for the Democrats to adopt the poli
cy at present of non interference
with this grave question, and thus
avoid the consequences of the great
excitement which would inevitably
follow. Rut the time is not far
distant when the people will de
mand a change in such thunder
tones that their leaders will be
forced both to hear and to heed.
