It is with feelings of peculiar sad
ness that we record the death of
Mrs. Martha Evans, mother of Mr.
J. K. Evans, of this city, which oc
curred on Wednesday night. Mrs.
Evans was about 40 years of age,
and had long been a consistent
member of the Baptist church.
Her benignant face and kind
voice will he seen and heard no

bright jewel has been added to the

and beautiful spirit lias been trans
lated to tin* heavenly clime.—
Though all was done which skill

gest to ward otf the destroyer, the
summons hail come, and she qui
etly ami peacefully passed over the
river of death, in company with
fair angels anil through the pearly
gates into the golden city “not
made with hands.” We deeply
sympathise with the bereaved fam
ily, wo hid them to grieve not “as
those without hope,” but to go to
“the llock that is higher than they”
for consolation.

At last we have the appearance
of ail organized fire department.—
The young men, leaving the au
thorities to fuss and wrangel over
the contested mayoralty, held a
meeting Wednesday night, and
resolved to organize y hook and
ladder company. Mr. J. D. San
ders was called to Hie chair, and
Mr. Leacock requested to act as
alive; the lmdy died in a few hour
while the girl was alive the last ac
counts—but she cannot live. The
verdict of the coroner’s jury* is, that
tiie children came to their death
by the bands of some person or
persons to them unknown.
So complete is the chain of cir
cumstantial evidence, and so
strong are the suspicions resting up
on the public mind that these most
unnatural parents committed this
most ferocious, most unparalied,
lienioits crime themselves, probably
to save tiie expense of feeding the
children, Justice Fox promptly is
sued warrants for the whole party.
No arrests have yet been made, so
far as we have learned. But their
arrest is’ sure, and these more than
tigers in human shape, must an
swer before a Burke county jury for
their dark deed of blood.
The Latest. — Buliff Smith
brought Ed. 1 >owse to jail yesterday
(Friday) evening. The women for
prudential motives have not yet
been arrested, but will be in a few
days. The five children are all
dead. There is no change in the
evidence, except that the boy, Floyd
(Jraliam, tri#*s to modify his state
ment hy saying now that lie only
went to the house once, that the door
was open and he saw an unknown
negro woman going away from
the house with a basket on her arm.
Of course, this change in the boy’s
statement was superinduced by the
influence of the man and the wo
men who perpetrated this henious
crime, and lias had no etleet to
alter public opinion.

Warren Leland,

New York on hoard a ship going around Capo
Horn, In tho early days of emigration to Cal
ifornia, ho learned that ono of tho olticors of
the vossol had cured himself, during tho voy
age, of an obstlnnto disease hy tho nso of
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla.
Sineo tlion Mr. LlSLAXD lias recommended
Ayku's S.us.sAr.\lui.t.\ in many similar
eases, and lie has never yet hoard of its fail
ure to olfoct a radical cure.
Some years ago ouo of -Mr. I.F.r.ANTfs farm
laborers bruised his leg. Owing to tho bad
state of Ids blood, an ugly scrofulous swelling
or lump appeared on the injured limb. Hor
rible'itching of tho skin, with burning and
darting pains through tho lump, made life
almost intolerable. The log became oner,
mously enlarged, and running ulcers formed,
discharging grunt quantities of extremely
olfcuslvo matter. No treatment was of any
avail until tho man, by Mr. 1,t:I.ami's direc
tion, was supplied with Avail's SausAl'A-
ltn.t.A, which allayed tho pain and Irritation,
healed tho sores, removed Iho swelling, mat
completely restored tho limb to use.
Mr. Lei.axd has personally used
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
for lthciinmllsni, with entire success ; and,
after careful observation, declares that, tu
his belief, there Is no medicine In tho world
equal to It for the uuro of l.lver Disorders,
