Executive Committee for the coun

Congressional District, hereby call
a meeting of the committee to be
held in Augusta, on Thursday, the
17th of April, inst., for the purpose
of organizing said committee by
the election of proper officers, tak
ing the necessary steps for the as
sembling of a Congressional Dis
trict National Convention, and the
transaction of such other business
as may be brought before the com

Duffie; E. B. Rogers, Glasscock; M.
R. Hall, Warren.
VF Mr. Randall, of Pennsylva
nia, say that all the appropriations
would be reported to the House be
fore the 110th of May, and in his
opinion Congress would adjourn by
June 20th. An end devoutly to be
hoped for.
The Savannah Times has
evidently become metropolitan if
not barronial. We hope, howev
er, that brother Richardson will
not forget his country friends, who
have always felt so warmly to
wards him, since his shadow has
become great in the land.
gjr The Macon Telegraph gets
off the following profound piece of
wisdom: “The moon will he full
next Thursday. The wiseacres al
ways predict a freeze on the full
moon in April, and the prediction
comes true about once in seventy-
five years.” Well, colonel, this
must be that seventy-fifth year.
The Blacksbear News <0 Sig
nal boasts that it has a subscriber
who stands paid up for three years.
That don’t amount to “a hill o’
beans.” The Citizen’ has one sub
scriber who “stands paid up” for
six years, and several who are on
the right side of the hooks for two
and three years. “Pick your flint”
and try again, brother Signal.
We learn from the Macon
Telegraph that a statue of Mr.
Wadley, late President of the sys
tem of roads of the Central R. R.
Co., is soon to be erected by the em
ployes of company, many of whom
grew gray in the service of the
road under his administration—and
knew him best. This is right, and
is a fitting tribute of respect to one
who, while the world acknowl
edged his greatness, knew him to
be a benefactor to the poor.
IT The meeting of the State
Democratic Executive Coipmitteo
which transpired in Atlanta last
Saturday, the proceedings of which
will be found printed on our first
page to-day, was harmonious, and
its action wise and cautious. It will
be observed that the State Execu
tive Committee has ordered two
State conventions; the first to meet
at Atlanta on the 8th of June, to
select delegates to the National
Convention, to meet in Chicago on
the 8th of July, to nominate a Dem
ocratic candidate for President, and
the second to meet in Atlanta on
the l!Uh of August for tho purpdse
of nominating candidates for gov
ernor and State House officers, and
to select candidates for Presiden
tial electors. The Augusta News
deprecates the appointment of two
conventions, and says: “It is a lit
tle unfortunate that that political
complications and Jealousies caus
ed the State Executive Committee
to deem it best to hold two State 1
conventions.” We disagree with
our Augusta contemporary, and en
dorse the act ion of the State Exec
utive Committee in tho appoint
ment of these two State conven
tions as eminently correct. We
have no idea whatever that “polit
ical complications and Jealousies”
in the least or remotest connection
influenced this action of the State
committee, hut that it recognized
the fact that the work to he done
was entirely distinct and discon
nected, and, therefore, appointed
two agents to execute it. We not
only find nothing to condemn in
the action of the State committee,
but much to commend.
THE KFFKCT OF DKFOllKSTATIO.X.
The cause for the evident change
of climate which has been gradual
ly taking place for the past thirty
years has at last aroused tin 1 atten
tion of scientists, who attribute it to
deforestation of the country. We
copy the following article on the
subject from the New Orleans
Times- Democrat:
The effect of deforestation on the
climate and physical condition of
many lands were lately well shown
by Dr. Felix Oswald in the North
American lie clew.
Asia Minor, lie says, has become
the epitome of a dying continent.—
In Spain tho agricultural value of
low
begins to be felt in the lands of tho
Western Hemisphere.” In two
centuries tho lumbermen of the
United States have “killed as many
trees ns the inhabitants of South
ern Europe felled in 2000 years be
tween the foundation of Rome gnd
the conquest of Granada.” The
water courses of New England
have shrunk until mills which once
had ample water power are com
pelled to resort to steam. The des
iccation which has made barren the
vegas’of Southern Spain has set in
along our Gulf States. The soil of
the mountain slopes, stripped of
their forests, will be washed away
by winter rains and thawing snows.
Rivers will shrink to brooks in sum
mer, but flood their valleys in
spring. Even the “granary of the
West will be confined to the irriga
ble valleys of the large streams.”—
When the stress begins to be felt,
the people will have to resort to
tree planting to save themselves
from starvation.
To some this may sound like ex
aggeration, but the New York pa
pers do not so regard it. They
point to tin 1 fact that the floods that
visited Franco and Germany last
year caused more permanent dam
age than the Franco-Prussian war.
The New York press urges the
State to prevent this dan
ger of overflow and drouth by pur
chasing the Adriondack country,
from which the Hudson and most
of the New York rivers flow. This
region is barren, and of little value
agriculturally, nor is its timber
worth much. It can lie purchased
comparatively cheap, and convert
ing) a State park, the timber being
thus preserved. At one time it
looked as if the project would fail,
but since the flood in the Ohio and
M ississippi the attention of the en
tire country has been turned to
deforestation. The necessity for pre
serving tlie woodlands is now re
cognized, and there seems to be the
best of reasons to hope for the pas
sage of this bill in New York, which
will, to a certain extent, test the
value of forests to regulate the
weather, and particularly the rain
fall.

The lies! of Family Hildas
The Secretary of the American Hlble Socie
ty recently remarked that In spite of the great
number of Bibles an dually sold in the United
Slates, there tft'O not half enough Bibles pub
lished. There are thousands of homes in our
broad land in which not a single copy of the
Sacred Scriptures is to be found.
Appreciating tilts grunt need, the National
Publishing Co., of Philadelphia, Chicago, SI.
Louis and Atlanta have Issued one of the
most attractive and superb euLioas of the
llilde ever published, and with the liberality
that bus chu'ucterlzed all their enterprises
have Issued it In the most elegant styles of
binding, and at prices which bring it within
the reach of every family.
To tho text of the Bible is added a series of
remarkable and unusually attractive fea
tures, which render this edition invaluable to
every Christian household. Foremost among
these is Dr. Smith’s Dictionary of the Bible,
which lsadmitted by aU denominations to he
the best Bible Dictionary over published. We
have next a series of succinct and carefully
prepared accounts of the various religious de
nominations of tho world, their history and
teachings. The Life oftlio Saviour and the
Lives of the Apostles are brought forward
prominently, nnd in such a manner as to he
of great service to every reader of the New
Testament. The wunuei ings in the Wilder
ness nnd the Tabernacle and Temple are criti
cally and admirably described. A series of
Scripture Illustrations affords comprehensive
explanations of ilie Manners nnd Customs of
the Ancients, of Biblical Antiquities, Scen
ery, Natural History, etc. Tho City of Jeru
salem Is also described with great minuteness.
Then 1'oBow a livgo number of chronological
and Other valuable tables, designed to pro

Serlptu’os. These tables are so numerous
Unit we have not space to name them.
Tlie book Is Magnificently Illustrated with
