The Survival of the Fittest.

From a private but most reliable
source, we learn that Major (teorge
'1'. Fames’ prospects for the nomi
nation, to Congress from the 10th I
district when the district conven
tion meets on the 1st of July to se-1
lect our standard bearer are al
ready bright, and are brightening
every day. The Atlanta corres
pondent of the Augusta Chronicle,
writing under date of April 5th to
that paper, says of Major Fames:
“In my recent travels over the
State, 1 have been impressed, and,
I confess, much pleased at the very
favorable mention universally
made at the candidacy of Major
George T. Fames for Congress in
the 10th district. Everywhere the
best men of the party accept the
matter as the very best that can be
done for the party, the State and
tla> country. His high character,
strong ability and unusually manly
qualities are everywhere recog
nized and appreciated, and there is
a prompt and general expression
that a more fitting choice in every
respect could not be made.
Major Fames is regarded as a
pure man, a conspicuous exemplar
of every individual excellence, and
a type of the best social merit. In
ids profession be has taken a high i
position, standing among the fore
most as a well informed and skillful
lawyer. Am a public i^an, lie lias
been patriotic, unselfish, and pro
foundly and disinterestedly con
cerned in the popular welfare, giv
ing his time and abilities to his
party and country without reward.
Major Fames is an uncommon
character in many respects. lie is
singularly and exeeptionably love
able, and yet ft man of unusual de
cision and intellectuulllty. He with
nil Iii.s uncommon tenderness of
nature, has convictions and nerv
ous brain power. He is an eloquent
speaker, a forceable writer, a
strong thinker, a man of both
thought and action. Major Fames
has some of the best qualities of the
{statesman, lie Inis equipoise of tem
per, practical judgment, freedom
from prejudices,intellectual thought
and a natural grasp of public sub
jects. His gentleness and dignity
are parennial, winning him res
pect, affection and influence always.
It seems a peculiarly appropriate
thing to send him to Congress now.
lie has long been a faithful worker.
His service in the unrewarded and
gratuitous work of the party has
been protracted, valuable and bril
liant. Asa member of the Nation
al Democratic Executive Commit
tee for so long a period that he lias
impressed himself beyond any oth
er man upon the policy of the or
ganization, achieving fame for him
self and his State. He is in his
ripe manhood, his admirable facul
ties in their prime, and with the
commendable ambition fully arous
ed to serve his people well, I know
of no person in the State better
equipped for useful and distinguish
ed public service.
There seems to be in his own dis
trict, as well as abroad in the State,
a high appreciation of tills estima
ble and valued citizen. It would
be especially proper, as it seems
to be a unanimous purpose, to be
stow upon Major Fames the honor
able trust that he would so well
grace and discharge.”
Sleeting of the Deiiinerntle Executive Committee
of the Tenth foiivrcKsioiml District.
Augusta News.
The Democratic Executive Com
mittee for the Tenth Congressional
District, met in the City Hall, in
Augusta, at noon to-day. On motion
of Sir. (). H. Rogers, of Washington
county, Dr. M. R. Hall, of Warren,
was elected Chairman. Mr. T. F.
Caulk, of Jefferson, was elected
Secretary.
Dr. Hall, in taking tho chair,
thanked the Committee, and order
ed the call of the roll of counties,
when the following responded:
Burke—T. J. McElmurray.
Columbia—W. L. Fenton.
Glasscock—W. It. Rogue, proxy
for E. F. lingers.
Johnson—<>. II. Rogers, proxy for
A. F. Daly.
Jefferson—T. F. Caulk.
Lincoln—'l\ F, Fleming, proxy for
T. II. Remsen.
McDultle—Not represented ((’apt.
T. A. Hamilton member).
Richmond—J. F. Camming, proxy
for 1., A. Dugas, Jr.
Taliaferro—W. '1'. Flint.
Warren—W. R. Hall.
Washington—(). 11. Rogers.
Col. W. Daniel, member of tin 1
State* Executive Committee from
the Tenth District, and ex-ofhcio
member of the District Committee,
was also present.
Messrs. McElmurray, Flynt and
Fenton wore appointed a Commit
tee on Proxies, and they reported
favorably on the proxies of Messrs.
Fleming, Cumming and Rogers,
they being regular and in writing.
Maj. Cumming’s amendment to the
report, that Air. Rogue be also ad
mitted to represent Glascock coun
ty, was also accepted, and the re
port, as amended, was adopted.
Air. AlcElmurray’s motion, that
Col. Daniel ho allowed the privil
eges of the floor, was adopted.
Chairman Hull then stated the
object of the meeting to be (lie se
lection of a place and lime for hold
ing tin* convention to nominate the
Democratic candidate for the next
Congress from the Tenth Congres
sional District, and such other steps
toward permanent organization of
the committee for the campaign ns
the committee thought necessary,
The place of holding the conven
tion was llrst calk'd. Mr. McElmnr-
ray suggested Wnynesboro, Air.
Rogers suggested Bnndersville, and
Mr. Fenton nominated Augusta.—
Air. Rogers urged the selection of
Fandersvilie in a graceful address,
and that pleasant city of Washing
ton county was selected by almost
unanimous vote.
The time for the convention oc
casioned some discussion, but was
quite ail harmoniously decided.
Air. Fenton proposed Alny 15th, as
this was a Presidential election
year, and it was best to organize as
sooi t as possible.
Air. Rogers moved to amend by
selecting July 1st as the time.
Alajor Cumming proposed the
12th of June as a suitable time, sw
tha t delegates could be selected at
tin* same time that delegates are
select*l for the State Convention
On the lfftli of June. May, lie con
sidered a little early, but June not
too curly, because if the republicans
make a contest in Georgia it will bo
in the Tenth District, which is a
new district. It was therefore
wise, lie thought, that a standard
hearer he in the field as early as pos
sible to organize the district.
AH. Rogers thought that four
months was long enough for the
canvass, as the election takes place
in November, Juno 12th or any date
so early was inconvenient in the
country, ami lie proposed July 1st
as a compromise between those who
wished the date early and those
who wished a date gy ]fl,te as Au
gust, Major Camming thou with
drew his suggestion, and July 1st
was unanimously adopted.
The Chairman stated that the
death of General DuFose left the
committee without a head, and
Alajor Cumming’s nomination of
Air. (). II. Rogers, of Washington
county was confirmed by acclama
tion and over the protest of that
popular and prominent young man.
Washington county having won
the laurels was accorded the honor
of the chairmanship by the unani
mous voice of the other counties;
uiid the committee on motion ot
Mr, Rogan, of Glascock, adjourned.

The Secretary of the American lilblo Socie
ty recently remarked that In spite of the great
Dumber of Millies annually sold In the United
Stales, there are not half enough Millies pub
lished. There ill'll thousands of homes in our
broad laud In which not a sipgjp copy of the
Sacred Scriptures Is to be found.
Appreciating tills great need, the National
Publishing Co., of Philadelphia, Chicago, SI.
Louis and Atlanta have Issued one of the
most altraelivo and superb udlHonH of the
Mlhle ever published, and with the liberality
that lias churftcteri/.ed all their enterprises
have Issued It In the most elegant styles ol
binding, anil at prices which bring It within
the reach of every family.
To the text of the Mlhle Is added a series of
remarkahl ■ and unusually attractive fea
tures, which render this edition invaluable to
every (ftirlsttun household. Foremost among
these Is Mr. Smith’s Idetimidi'y of the Mlhle,
which Is admitted by all denominations to be
the best Mlhle Dictionary ever published. We
have next a series of succinct and carefully
prepared accounts of the various religious de
nominations of the world, their history and
teachings. The Life of the Saviour and the
Lives of the Apostles are brought forward
prominently, and In such a manner nil to he
of great service to every render of the New
Testament. The wanderings In the Wilder
ness and the Tabernacle and Temple are criti
cally and admirably described. A series of
Scripture Illustrations aliords comprehensive
explanations of the Manners anil Customs of
the Ancients, Of JjjbMcnl Antiquities, Scen
ery, Natural History, etc, The (Tty of Jeru
salem is also described with great minuteness.
Then follow a large number of chronological
and other valuable tables, designed to pro
mote and facilitate the study of the Sacred
Scriptures. These tables are so numerous
that we have not space to name them.
Tito book Is magnificently Illustrated with
superb engravings by the great artist, Gus-
tava I)ore, and with a large number of ex-
gravlugs. Of course a family lllblc much de
pends upon the illustrations, anil the publish
ers of this volume have embellished their
Mlhle with a taste and liberality that deserve
the highest praise. The additional matter
contains over 2,600 beautiful engravings, ex
alted in the highest Style of art. These en
gravings are genuine works of art, and were
made at a cost of over £10,000. The great num
ber and high character of these engravings
make this tho most valuable art publication
of the century.
The Family Record and Marriage Certifi
cate are beautiful specimens of lithograph
ing, and at the close of the volume Is a hand
some Photograph Album, with room for six
teen portraits, a very desirable feature In a
work of this kind.
Every Intelligent person knows that the
excellence of the binding of a hook depends
upon Its neatness and durability. A Mlhle
maybe very showily bound, and yet put to
gether so tliiiislly that It will come to pieces
In a few years. Although covered with
showy stamps, and apparently well bound,
the work may he done In such a loose and uu-
siihstiintlnl manner tlml with only ordinary
handling the Mlhle will crack and finally fall
to pieces. This Mlhle Is made upon a very
different, plan. Only tho best materials are
used In Its manufacture, and all the work is
done by the best of workmen mid the most
highly Improved machinery. Every stage of
the work Is carefully supervised. It would
lie impossible to devise u system by which
greater euro could bo given to the manufac
ture of a book, or by which tho Interests of
subscribers could ho more carefully guarded.
The publishers realize the fact that a family
Mlhle maybe subjected to very hard usage,
anil must he bound substantially as well as
handsomely. They are published In German
also,
We cordially commend this magnificent
Mllile to our renders. It Is u shuttle that any
Christian household should he without it
Family Mllile, and wo commend this one as
the most complete and the cheapest In the
market, It Is sold by subscription only, and
