The Survival ok the Fittest.
WAYNEKIMUIO. <1A.. MAY 9. IS81.
Y0I.U1IK III, No. I.
"With 111is issue The Tri e Ci ti
zen begin* its third volume, and
without doubt to-day enjoys a
larger bona fide circulation than
any other journal ever before pub
lished in Waynesboro, and the pub
lishers feel what they think is a
commendable pride in its success.—
Neither has this success been spas
modic, sensational, or phenominal,
but the result of a steady growth,
which still continues and increases,
and we proudly stand by our modest
little motto: “The xaerival of the
fittest”
Three years ago The Citizen
sprung into existence, and Weak and
feeble timidly sought public favor,
sustainnnee and encouragement; to
day it numbers its friends and sup
porters by the thousand, and it
gathers strength with every week
of its existence. This is no idle
boast or baseless brag, and whoever
will show a right to know, can have
it verified, and for all its past suc
cess the publishers feel greatlul to an
intelligent, a discriminating and a
generous public.
The course of The Citizen has
been to build up, not to pull down; it
has advocated the right and opposed
the wrong with all its power. No
enterprise which might add to the
advancement of the town or county
has been left unnoticed or unen
couraged. We have endeavored to
make The Citizen a weekly refiex
of events transpiring in the county,
and have so far succeeded that the
people and the Press look to its
columns for the news of the county,
and with the increased facilities
which we are now inaugurating we
hope to make our home depart
ment fuller, more interesting and
more satisfactory.
Finding it impossible to meet the
demands made upon us or to serve
tile rapidiyincreasing number of our
patrons either promptly or well
with the limited and worn material
and old Press at our command, we
one year ago incurred a very heavy
expense in the purchase of an ex
tensive outfit of new and beautiful
type and fine new Presses, and have
from time to time since added to
our stock as necessity required,
until we now have the most com
pletely equipped office in the State
or perhaps in the South outside the
larger cities. Thus it will be seen
that our expenses have been a con
tinual Outpouring. Hut we have
now a complete outfit, and shall
turn our attention to the improve
ment of the paper. Every patron,
therefore,as it were,is a stockholder,
and the more liberal the patronage
the better can we serve them. Some
might say that so heavy an outlay
was injudicious, but with the exam
ple of past encouragement, and
with an abiding faith in an intelli
gent public, and, last but not least,
a determination to deserve well at
their hands we are willing to bide
the result.
The present year will witness
another great struggle between the
national political parties for the as-
scendency. ltight proposes to
make another attempt to wrest the
reins of government from the un
scrupulous, dishonest and unprinci
pled dominant party who has so
long held sway, and trampled jus
tice and human liberty in the dust.
Armed with the principles of gov
ernment as laid down by the great
Thomas Jefferson, The Citizen
will be found in its proper place
doing battle to the extent of its
ability under the old Democratic
flag. And when the battle shall
have been fought and the smoke
clears away, The Citizen hopes to
be the bearer of the glad tidings to
its readers—“our banner floats in
triumph from the battlements!”
And now, gentle reader, with the
determination to do all in our pow
er to make The Citizen a wel
come visitor at your fireside, an
advocate of advancement, a true
exponent of principle, a medium of
news, a smpathlzer with the dis
tressed, and a hearty wish for abun
dant harvests and great prosperity
to each of its patrons, and thanks
for past favors, we once more make
our bow.
