Did the cap tit “One of the Poo-1
pie”? The article of “True Citizen” |
simply deprieated the fact that 1
harmony in the Demociatic party j
is rendered “impossible” by men
\\ ho sacrifice paity principle to tlie those office seekers the Demo-
greed of office. It is well known
that the party organization in
Burke is continually beset and an
tagonized by the most importunate
.set of “professional office seekers”
that ever bored and disgusted an
intelligent Democracy. I do not
set* why any man should take this
up and reply to it, unless lie ackowl-
edges its applicability to himself.—
There are a great many “people”
in Burke, and yet only “one” saw
lit to reply. However, his reply does
not meet a single question present
ed.
There never would have been any
division in the party but for these |Frepiy”?
“office seekers”—every thinking j shoukl ho Mreply „ if
cratlc minorities would always ac
quiesce, and we would present al
most a solid front.
“One of the People” regards the
question of harmony as a very sim
ple one. He says, “let the voice of
the majority be the will of the par
ty.” We suppose lie means to
adopt the motto of the “profession
als,” to wit: “Bet tlie voice of the
a ma-
iiian will agree to this. Indeed,
there was no one else to divide it.—
As a matter of fact, who is it that
always beads the negroes and white
Republicans in _ opposition to tlie
party? The question suggests the
answer — invariably it lias been
some man who hungered for of
fice. It was simply a recognition of
this disturbing element (office ma
nia) that caused “True Citizen” to
say: “It is all stuff to talk about
harmonizing the different elements
iconstituting the Democratic party
of Burke. It can’t be done.” Tlie
proposition is too plain viewed in
the light of past experience to be
contradicted, nor does “Om> of the
People” really attempt it. Those
“professional office seekers” won't
he “harmonized,” They make a
profession of the business, and if
‘.they fail of success in the party,
»>f which they claim to be members,
fhey “bolt,” and raise the cry of
“ring” and “clique” to justify an ap
peal to the “people”—alias the ne
gro. Even some good white peo
ple have been duped for awhile,
and split off from the organized De
mocracy. When the sovereign
states of the South resumed tlie
powers they had delegated to the
general government, the political
demagogues of the North raised the
cry of “insurrection” and “rebell
ion” to justify an invasion of our
soil, and the unthinking people of
the North caught up the umeaning
words, and rushed to war. So our
Burke county demagogues cry
“ring,” “clique,” “junta of court
house politicians,” and other like
ridiculous, unmeaning phrases to
impose upon and catch the unwary.
•Of course, the Democratic party is
in one sense a “clique”—so is the
Republican party a “clique”—so is
every body of men who unite
for a common purpose. But
the most shameful “clique” of
all is the fusion of office seek
ers with the white Republicans and
negro politicians about Waynes
boro, whose sole object is to defeat
the Democratic “clique,” and get
office. As individuals are Judged
by the company they keep, so must
a “clique” he judged by its affilia
tions and combinations. It is no
uncommon spectacle, at Waynes
boro, to witness those professionals
juggling, plotting and “cliquing
together with the negro leaders
und white Republicans, who by-tlie-
way, claimed to ho “Jeffersonian
Democrats when they llrst took (lie
office fever. Will “One of the Peo
ple” deny the truth of this allega
tion? If so, let him do it without
crying “Bourbon,” “ring,” and such
hypocritical cant. Should ho at
tempt to deny it, the truth of it can
he established by tin* affidavits of
• no best citizens in Waynesboro.
The Democratic "clique” is con-
trolled and directed by an execu
tive committee chosen by the Dem
ocratic party in mass meeting. The
J union “clique” acknowledges no
master save tho greed of office.—
I hose professionals, negro lenders
uml will to Republicans render each
other mutual support, and if this Is
denied, we can only point the ln-
Mturing mind to the results of their
combinations, with which all are
huiiiliar. Their caucuses are secret.

Dk. Edward Barky.—Dour .Sir:
Years ago, while living on the river
swamp plantation, I was alllictecl
with very severe cases of Chills and
Fever. I tried every remedy I
could think of to break the chills,
but I failed to do so. The disease
finally got to such a state that large
doses of quinine failed to give even
temporary relief. Seeing an ad
vertisement of yours, in which you
proclaimed the merit of your“.South-
ern Malarial Antidote,” I deter
mined to give your medicine a trial.
1 bought one bottle, and after tak
ing the first dose I experienced im
mediate relief, I continued taking
the medicine until the bottle was
exhausted. Since taking the medi
cine I have not laid a single case of
chill and fever up to the summer of
the present year. The present year
I rented a plantation which is
characterized by the people of the
county as the “headqu..rters of
malaria.” I wished to plant the
place in question on account of its
adaptation to rice. Mindful of your
valuable medicine I determined to
risk the place. Early in July Phad
three cases of fever and ague. I
sent for a bottle of your medicine at
once, hut only used half of it. Tlie
other half I gave to my servant,
who in like manner was nftlicted.
Both myself and servant were com
pletely restored to health and have
had no recurrence of the disease. I
induced two of my neighbors who
were affiicted with fever and ague
to use your medicine, which result
ed m their recovery, and like myself
they have liad no recurrence of the
malady. I am still living on tlie
aforesaid plantation, and am as
bouyant and vigorous as if J was
living in a most genial clime. I
will not attempt to portray the
merits of your valuable medicine,
for 1 could not adequately do justice
to such ii subject. 1 wilfisimply say
it ranks first among medicines’, and
certainly in malarial countries it
lias no equal. 1 cheerfully roeom

success, 1 am gratefully yours,
