The Survival of the Fittest.
WAYNESBORO. OA„ AUGUST 1. l.SKl.
Augusta is to enjoy the
luxury of an electric livjlit in the
future.
Augusta is taking steps to
ward off the cholera, a visit from
which to this country is probable.—
The board of health has ordered a
strict observance of all the health
ordinances. This is right, and it
behooves the authorities of our cit
ies to be on the alert, as a visit from
this terrible plague is more than
probable.
&r The question, “does prohi
bition prohibit?” has for a long
time been a mooted point. We re
produce the followiug advertise
ment from the Dublin Gazette, a pa
per published in a hrohibition coun
ty for the consideration of those
who are endeavoring to suppress
the tratlc by law:
FILL YOUR JUGS.
If you want a jug or keg of first
class whisky, of any kind, send your
order to W. M. Orr, Oconee, Ga. it
will be shipped to you direct by the
boat on short notice.
gjtf The Brunswick Herald is
still trying to boom Colonel Estill,
of Savannah, for governor. From
our stand point this action on the
part of brother Bingham has a
queer look. First, and very impor
tant, Colonel Estill says he does not
want it and would not have tin;
office; second, no man uninterested
in the attainment of some selflish or
personal object can honestly
charge the administration of Gov.
McDaniel with a single fault or fail
ure—the people are satisfied; third,
our editor seems to look askance
at everything in Savannah, and to
wonder if any good thing can come
out of Nazareth. Editor Bingham
has eat so many crabs until he has
become “crabbed,” and were we his
physician we would advise him to
take a trip to the mountains, and
diet himself on shewmack berries.
PRKFERHKD CREDITORS.
The report of business failures in
the United States have averaged
more than a hundred per week
for long time. The law as it now
stands in this state, and we believe
in every other state and territory,
permits these bankrunts to prefer
certain creditors to the exclusion of
others, and the limited amount of
assets is absorbed by the preferred
creditors, while those not on the
preferred list are forced to sustain
a total or nearly total loss. This is
wrong, and the law should be re
pealed and so enacted as to force
a proportionate division of the
bankrupt’s assets among his credi
tors without distinction or prefer
ence. The bankrupt purchased the
property of the nonpreferred cred
itor with equal obligations to pay
for it as he did that of the preferred
creditor, and the law should not al
low any distinctions to be made.—
It is a noteworthy fact that the
poorer and consequently more
needy class of creditors are those
who are never found in the pre
ferred list. We hope that our leg-
-islature will pass such a law and
force justice to bo done.

erable harm. A large sum of mon
ey, it is said, was dished out by
friends of Jackson, the amount be
ing estimated at $5,000 or $0,000.—
Hammond carried six out of eight
of the country precincts, and while
the counting of the city vote has
not been completed, it is known
that he has carried the county by a
handsome majority.

Dear Citizen:—I have noticed
in your columns that the names of
several citizens have been proposed
as candidates to represent Burke
county in the next legislature. I
propose the name of Hon. Jos. A.
Shewmake, and I know of no one
better able to represent us than lie.
He will do it honorably in the fu
ture as he has done in the past.—
Judge Shewmake has held many
offices, and he has tilled them all
creditably. There are few men in
this county that are better able to
fill the office of representative than
he is, and If the affairs of our coun
ty are placed in his charge, 1 feel
assured that lie will represent us
right, and reflect honor upon our
grand old county.

Otto AN'. Marshall, the boss tailor
of Augusta, was in town AVednes-
day, on route for New York to pur
chase his fall stock of suitings in
person, which is a secret of his suc

cash for them, and knows his busi
ness. He is grand representative
for the State of Georgia of the Ger
man Order of ITarugari, which
meets in Buffalo, N. A'., on the
2d of September, and will attend
this meeting during his absence.
On his return he will visit our city
before going to Augusta, with his
samples, thereby giving our citizens
first choice, which they, no doubt,
will be ready to grasp. Hold your
orders for him.
