vr Remember, Democrats, that
next Tuesday is election day. and
that every Democrat is expected to
be present and to do ids duty by
casting ids vote for the full Demo
cratic ticket.
_ Yesterday (Friday) was
consumed in taking evidence in the
contested election case which the
defeated candidates will bring lie-
fore the house at an early day of
the session of the legislature, and
the case is still progressing. It is
beyond human forecast to say what
the result will be. We only know
that both sides claim ample testi
mony to support their allegations.
We shall await the decision of the
house with interest.
A terrible and bloody trag
edy was enacted in Dawson, Ga., on
last Saturday evening in which Mr.
Cheves, editor of the Dawson Jour
nal, shot and instantly killed Cant.
T. II. Pickett, a prominent lawyer
of that place. From the published
accounts we learn the following
facts of the killing: It seems that
a quarrel originated between the
two men during the progress of
the primary election in Dawson
last July, which had never been
settled. On Saturday evening,
about 4 o’clock, Cheves, who had
been drinking very hard for several
days, saw Cnpt. Pickett standing on
the street, and asked ('apt. It. F.
iSimmorm to see Cnpt. Picket and
settle the matter, lint before Capt.
Simmons had returned, Cheves
armed himself with a double-barrel
gun and walking up within a few
feet of Capt. Pickett, and said
something which the by standers
did not hear, but to which Capt.
Pickett replied by asking him
what he meant. Instantly the gun
was leveled, and before Cheves
could be stopped he tired .both
barrels into Pickett’s body, the first
barrel, heavily charged with duck
shot, taking effect in the left arm,
the second charge entering the
body just below the left nipple and
penetrating the heart. Capt. Pick
ett fell and died without a groan or
a struggle. The affair was a sad
one, and has plunged two families
into great trouble.

For many years past Augusta
business men have enjoyed a repu
tation for solidity second to no city
in the Union. But lately the city has
been startled by several unlooked
for and important failures. Among
the failures which have occurred
within the last two or throe weeks
are JamesG. Bailie Sons, carpets;
George T. Jackson & Co., mill men;
M. J. Verdery&Co., stock brokers.
W. II. Barrett, druggist, has sold
out. Of these failures George T.
Jackson & Co. and Verdery & Co.
are the most important; the former
Arm failing for $100,000, and the lat
ter for $30,000, and claimed to have
been consequent upon the failure of
Jackson & Co.
A special telegram to the Atlan
ta Constitution, sneaking of the
Jackson failure says: “President
Jackson’s defalcation from the En
terprise factory amounts to $100,-
000 or more, as shown by his con
fession and the statement of the
bookkeeper. It seems that the
money of the mill has been taken
from time to time for eighteen
months, covered by false entries
and omissions in the books, un
known to the directors, and when
the revelation was made every
body was shocked and surprised.—
It also seems that the mill has been
making money, and half the defi
cit is from "4he profits, hence the
condition ot the mill Is not so bad,
and stock need not suffer any great
decline. The question of a receiv
er was discussed on the 29th inst.,
but was resisted by the first mort
gage bondholders, who want the
mill run on as before under a new
management and a business-like
policy.

The above named gentleman has
a new advertisement in another
colmn to-day. He informs us that
his large stock of fine goods must be
sold regardless of price to make
room for a new stock. When such
offers as this occur, then is the time
to take advantage of them and save
your money. Go and price Frank
lin’s goods.

We take pleasure in calling the
attention of our readers to tlie ad
vertisement of Mr. C. L. Green in
to-day’s issue. He is determined
to sell, and has marked his goods
down to cost. Now is the time to
buy goods cheap, and you will no
doubt take advantage of the oppor
tunity. Mr. Green has a fine stock,
and you can find anything there
you want. Go and see him.

But three days intervene before
.dhe day of election, and the great
battle of right against might must be
fought. While we are fully aware
of the unscrupulousness of tho Re
publican party, and that it will
not hesitate to use the power of the
government to defeat the will of
t he people, we have believed that
the day of victory had come.
We can but wait watch and hope,
if the American people have
enough honesty and virtue left to
hurl the corrupt party from pow
er which lias prostituted the govern
ment for so many yqar^thon will
the Goddess of Liberty once more
smile upon her children. But if
t he Republican party shall be again
clothod with the power to subvert
the liberties of the people, then will
this republic go down in revolution,
and blood, and the last vestuge of
popular liberty be obliterated. It
Is idle to suppose that revolution
is any more impossible in this coun
try—wo say it Is the inevitable of ir
eontluuencu of the Republican par
ty in power, We by no means in
tend to say that tho South will
again rebel, or form another Con
federacy—she is powerless to do so
even if every citizen \yitliin her
borders were armed cap-a-pii and
“eager for the fray.” But embolden
ed by their schemes of centralization
and tyranny, that party will finally
break into factions and throttle
each other, and inaugurate an in-
ternecene war the parallel to which
jiislory does not prusent an exam
ple. Let us hope that the Ameri
can people yet possesses sullicient
virtue and political honesty to
avoid tills great calamity to their
country.
