The Soldier in llattle..
The question has otten been asked,
“how do soldiers feel in battle?”
and it is one jllfflcull to answer. A
long experience among veterans in
the ranks leads the writer to be
lieve that the emotion experienced
in going under lire is much the
same with all men. To the raw re
cruit the crash of small arms and
the roar of cannon were simply ap
palling; he felt that lie was going
forward to certain death. With
pale cheeks and clenched teeth he
held his* place determined t > do bis
duty as best he might. If very
much excited heloaddd his musket
and forgetting to put on the neces
sary percussion cap, and went
through the motion of tiring, only
to ram a fr<?sh cartridge on top of
the first one, when, for the first time
using a cap, he was incontinently
knocked down by the tremenduous
recoil of his gun, and believed he
was badly wounded. Instances are
known where muskets have been
found on battle-fields containing
six or seven cartridges. Finally
the green soldier discovers that he
is not hurt, and that every body
does not get killed in an engage
ment, so he regains his confidence,
and passes successfully through his
baptism of fire.
To the veteran it is far different.
He knows too well that every bat
tle reduces his average chances of
escape, yet so habituated has he
become to the rattling fusilades
and desperate charges, he scarcely
heeds the danger surrounding him.
The shriek of the shells over his
head, the buzz of the bullets past his
ear, are now familiar sounds; and
trusting to the chances of war, the
infantry man fires rapidly with his
musket or the artilleryman calmly
rams home another charge of grape
and canister as his battery opens
at close range on an advancing
body of the enemy. All men are
naturally afraid of death, but the
trained and experienced soldier
learns to keep down that fear, and
nonchalantly do what is required
of him.
Noke Katen Off.
A young man named John Naves,
living hear here, had an eating can
cer on his face, which had eaten
away his nose, part of his cheek,
and extended up nearly to liis eye.
It was one ot the most angry eat
ing sores that I had ever seen. Ilis
throat finally became involved to
such an extent that he could only
swallow liquid food. After usin^
all the remedies without checking
the ravages of the eating cancer, his
general health was broken down,
he was confined to his bed arid
thought it to be only a question of
time about his*d£ath from tne can
cer. I put him on Swift’s Specific,
as a last resort, and he began td
improve with thC first dose. Ilis
general health improved at once,
and rapidly; his throat got well;
the ravages of the cancer were soon
stopped, it began to heal around
the edges; and after a few months
treatment with S. S. S. ho has got
ten entirely well. His face is all
healed over with new flesh, and
his general health is excellent.
His recovery is wonderful.

Mr. W. A. Edmunds, of Baker
county, has a Gorman silvor knife
and fork captured from the Yankee
General Palmer, at .the battle of
Seven Pines.' General Palmer and
his wife were at dinner at the
moment of the Confederate surprise
of the Federal camp. He had a
"cabin constructed of pine poles, well
carpeted and furnished in handsome
style. As a trio of rebels composed
of Mr. Edmunds, J. II. Cook, now of
Atlanta, and Bed Perry, of Ran
dolph county, entered the cabin,
the General leaped out of the win
dow and escaped. His wife asked
protection, which she received.
She was a magnificent woman, and
was treated with all the deference
common to the Southern nature.
She was placed in an ambulance,
sent to the rear, and shortly after
returned to her friends.

Wayorruw Reporter.
There is but one expression of the
travelling public, that is, “I find the
Harnett the equal of the best in
point of fare, clean rooms, nice and
soft beds, and as for the regular
home comforts, it surpasses them
all, besides the price of board is in
keeping with the hard times, only
about half what the others charge.”
The ladies like it, and it is getting
to be a great resort for them. When
you visit the city go to the Harnett
and get acquainted with the clever
est hotel man to be found, Colonel
Harnett.
