The Survival of the Fittest.
WAYNESBORO. OA„ DEC. 5, 188t.
var It is really amusing to see
what good Democrats the native
Republicans have so very suddenly
become. The Augusta post master,
for instance.
IT The last issue of the Thom-
asvilie Enterprise contains the ter
rible account of the killing of a lit
tle live year old child by another
child only six years old, in that
county, a few days ago, by shooting
with a pistol with which these mere
babies were allowed^ to have to
play with. The law* should hold
any grown person or person of
sound discretion criminally re
sponsible for all such accidents.
tr If it was not so ridiculous
it would he really pitiful to note
the chagrin of the Republican
leaders over their late defeat. They
have burned St. John in elHgy,
abused the Sou. h, cursed the “nig
ger,” kicked all the Independent
Republicans out of the party who
voted for Cleveland, and done many
other foolish things. It is really ex
cruciating to see their'agony. So far
as the South is concerned, she sits
serenely upon a high place, as it
were, and smiles complacently at
the impotent rage of the caged
beast, now powerless to do harm.
STUAXtiK) DKATII.
A news dispatch from Chattanoo
ga, Tenn., says, Julius Babbel, a far
mer near Somerset in that state,
met death the other day in a form
in which it has come to very few
persons in the history of the world.
A meteoric stone falling from the
sky is said to have passed through
lus body like a cannon shot. It is
only in comparatively recent times
that the possibility of such an ac
cident has been recognized by men
of science. Formerly the stories of
stones falling from the sky, which
have been part of the folk lore of
almost every people from time im
memorial, were looked upon as
mere inventions or the result ofi^c. Chew
vulgar credulity. But many well
attested stories of the fall of meteor
ic masses upon the earth are now
recorded, and so the account of far
mer Babbel’s death is not in itself
impossible.
A TUIPI.E Ml'UDElt.
A dispatch to the Atlanta Consti
tution, at Bainbridge, Gn., Dec. 3,
gives the following account of a
terrible murder which occurred in
Mitchell county last Tuesday night:
“A horrible tripple murder, for
the purpose of robbery, occurred
five miles west of Pelham, in Mitch
ell county, on Tuesday night last.
After they had retired to bed and
were asleep, some one entered the
house of Mr. Stephens Goodwin,
and with a knife or razor nearly
severed the heads from the bodies
of Mr. Goodwin, Mrs. Malinda
Gregory and her son, Richard Greg
ory* b young man about 20 years of
age, all of whom slept in the same
house. As there was no struggle,
except id the case of young Gregory
who after the murderers had fled,
struggle from his bed. It is probable
that the victims were first chloro
formed and then murdered. A
horse and buggy and a fine double-
barrel gun were taken off by the
murderers. A party which was
organized to hunt the murderers,
who went in the direction of Flor
ida, passed this city to-day. It was
reported that Goodwin had a con
siderable sum of money by him,
and it was to obtain this probably
that the terrible deed was commit
ted. They failed, however, for the
money was elsewhere. Suspicion
rests on no particular Individuals,
and parties are seurehing the coun
try in every direction for the mur
derers and the stolen articles, which
it is hoped may lead to the appre
hension of the guilty parties. A
reward of $300 is offered by the
brothers of Mr. Goodwin for their
apprehension.
LAUGH DAMAGES.
Our readers will remember the
terrible railroad accident which oc
curred near Herndon, in this coun
ty, on the Central road, a year
ago, in Which two or three persons
were killed Qutright and several
wounded. Among the latter was a
Mr. J. R. Wilson, an employe of
the road, who sued the road for
damages. The suit was concluded
Tuesday, of which the Savannah
News says:
“The attention of the city court
was occupied yesterday in the trial
of the case of J. R. Wilson against
the Central Railroad and Banking
Company, in which the plaintiff
claimed damages to the amount of
$20,000 for injuries received while
employed on the road as a train
hand, on December 13th last. It
will be remembered that on the
morning of tho 13th a collision oc
curred about 14 miles west of Mil
ieu between an up freight train
and tho Atlanta express, which re
sulted in the death of one person
and the serious injury of several
others, including Wilson. Tho tes
timony showed that Wilson was
badly bruised, and that ho was in
jured to such an oxteut internally
as to be permanently Incapacitated
for work. It was also shown that
19 years ago ho was dangerously
111 with typhoid fever, and that soon
after he was temporarily crippled
with a swollen leg. The defendants
undertook to introduce evidence
to show that Wilson had been more
or less incapacitated on that ac
count up to the time the collision
took place, and being at fault he
could not recover from tho railroad
company. Kvidcuce was intro
duced by the plaintiff which show
ed that Wilson’s leg got well, and
that for nearly 20 years, and up to
the time of the collision, he had
been an active working man, and
that the injuries ho received in tho
accident wore the fault of the com
pany. Tho counsel for the plaintiff
cited legal authorities to tho effect
that if a person should bo injured
on a railway and without his fault,
the railway would bo liable. The
case of the plaintiff seemed clearly
established. Tho Jury retired, and
after being out about three hours
returned a vordict awarding the
plaintiff $0,500 damages.
