are found loitering around our streets. This

Last Tuesday a negro woman living on Mr.
P. Jones’ plantation, In 75th district, left
her child ulono In her house, and during her
absence the child fell In the fire and was so
badly burned that It died during tho night.

Holland’s dancing academy was a complete
success, and was most exquisitely enjoyed by

Church Dedication.
Last Sunday tho beautiful new Presbyterian
church of this city was solemny dedicated to
the service of the Most High God. Rev. Geo.
T. Goetahus, of Augusta, conducted tho
dedicatory services, and preached a most elo
uent sermon to an appreciative congrega
on. At an early hour tho church was not
only filled, but many wero unable to find
room, nnd reluctantly turned away. Wo
adopt the following communication upon this
subject from a correspondent from this city
to the Augusta Chronicle us both elaborate
and true.
"A genial sun greeted the dedication day of
tho Presbyterian church in Waynesboro on
Holiday, the good Master sending Isitli bright
ness and warmth to cheer tho hearts of tho
faithful The Interior of the church present
ed a most attractive appcaranco with Us
white walls and walnut furniture, tho
contrast being happy In effect. From tho
center hung an exceedingly handsome chan
duller of twelve lights—this elegant and use
ful ornament was the gift of one of Waynes
boro's most substantial citizens—Mr. Hope

held on the body of Jack Griffin, colored, who
was shot last Friday night while committing
a burglary in the store el Mr. lloulzahu, by
Capt. Lambeth, our night policeman, an ac-
ount of which appeared In these columns

STATE OF GEORGIA.—Burke County.
Testimony In the case of judgment over the
body of Jack Griffin:
Dr. A. O Whitehead sworn: Upon exam
ining the body 1 find two shots entering In
the buck, from four to five Inches under tho
lower point of the shoulder bludo, the one
under tho left shoulder bludo, running direct
ly through nnd lodging about 3 Inches under
the left nipple, Just under the skin, tho one
under the right shoulder blade, ranging In-
nrd and downward, nil I In my opinion clth-
wound was sufficient ) produce death.
L II. Koutzahn sworn: I havo lost a cer
tain lot of goods They were stolen from mo
on tin night of the tilth of December, 1N84,
rom my store In city of Waynesboro, consist-
g of slioes, dry goods, etc. I found two
pulrs shoes in Jack Griffin’s house, one pair
on Ills wife’s feet. I know Jack Griffin, he Is
at his house dead. He was shot with two bul
let holes In Ills back . I have private marks
on all the goods that were stolen, and I Iden
tify them by It, nnd I know the goods, and to
the best of my knowledge and belief I think
Jack Griffin stole said goods. The valuo of
said goods were about flUO, nnd I havo recov
ered about onc-lialf.
Flllls Griffin, sworn: Jnck Griffin was at
my house the first part of the night (Friday
night). I don't know whon he went off or
when he came back. Whon I woke up he
said he felt bad. He always says lie folt bad
He got up tho next morning and went out
buck. Did not stay long. He brought me two
pulrs of shoes Friday at 12 o'clock Told mo
:ie bought them Jack Griffin Is my husband.
He Is now dead.
A. P. Lambeth, sworn: At half-past one
clock I saw a light in M r. Rontzahn’s store,
went up tho stops to the passage-way from
the front street and knocked ut the door and
asked who was In there. Tho light was put
ant and no answer mndo. I cnlledjthroo or
four times. I then closed tho door and
enlled for help, then one of tho men made an
attempt to come out of tho door I told him
If ho came out I would shoot him, and we
both shot at tho samo time, and I tired two
‘ rrshots In the passage way. My impress
ion Is he ffrod throe shots He then ran down
the back steps As he was going down I tired
two shots nt him. I’m night-watchman for
tho city of Waynesboro, Ga , and It Is my
duty to look after the cure of all the stores In
said town, nnd being satisfied that these wero
burglars Is the reason I shot. About the tiino
the first man cleared tho steps, I heard a
nolso in the room nnd discovered anothor
man, and I told him if he came out I would
shoot him I did not recognize cither They
did not have any goods I examined tho
door of tho store and found the bolt of the
door broken off nnd the padlock on tho out
side broken off and tho goods scattered about
the store I found a hut In tho store. (Hat

Evans Is a very efficient officer.
