The Florida Cow Hoy.
The cowboys are a class entirely
distinct from the “cracker.” They
live in the magnificent stretch of
country in Brevard, Manatee, and
Southern Hernando counties. They
own from 1,000 to*15,000 little cattle,
covered with curly hair, which
roam all the year through the prai
rie lands, and are herded once a
year for marking.
Some of the cowboys are worth
$15,000, and they all have plenty of
money at times, which they bury in
the woods. All through South
Florida the currency is the old shin-
plaster, silver and gold of old dates
and Spanish gold.
Th6 cowboy is frequently a mag
nificent specimen of a man. The
older ones wear a long heavy
beard, wide sombreros, and have
a swarthy complexion. Outdoor
exercise developed strength of limb
and fine constitutions, and he prides
himself on his personal courage.—
In his visits to the towns, which
are fequent, he generally cleans out
the place and then lies in a drunken
stupor for several days, when he
saddles his pony and returns to his
little log cabin, which he uses for a
home when ho is within twenty
miles of it.
He carries a whip of strong plaited
cow-hide, twenty feet long attached
to what looks like a shillelah, with
Which he cuts through the strongest
bull’s hide at a single stroke.—
When an animal is wilder than
usual, the cowboy seizes it by the
horns and throws it with a quick
motion of his strong arms. Occa
sionally they fight their bulls Span
ish fashion, but these amimals are
chiefly sent to Cuba, all the lighting
bulls in that country being raised
in.Florida. The herds are frequent
ly driven to l’unla ltassa and other
ports, where they are sold to West
India butchers.
Cattle Feeding.
Most animals eat in proportion to
their weight, under average of age,
temperature and fatness.
A good guide for a safe quantity
of grain per day to maturing cattle,
is one pound to each hundred of
their weight, thus an animal weigh
ing 1,000 pounds may receive 10
pounds ot grain.
Never give rapid changes of food,
but change often.
Give fattening cattle as much as
they will eat, and often—five times
a day.
Every salt feeding in the fall will
make the winter progress more cer
tain by 30 per cent.
Give ns much salt and water at
all times as they will take.
In using roots, it is one guide to
give just so much, in association
with other things, so that the ani
mal may not take any water,
In buildings have warmth with
complete ventilation, without cur
rents, but never under 40 nor over
70 degrees Fareinhett.
A cold, damp temperature will
cause animals to consume more
food without corresponding result
in,bone, muscle, flesh or fat, much
being used to keep up the warmth.
Stall feeding is better for fat
making than box or yard manage
ment, irrespective of health.
The growing animal intended for
beef, requires a little exercise daily
to promote muscle and strength of
costitution, when ripe, only so much
as to be able to walk to market.
We all know well what is meant
by the expression “in a rut ” and we
all ^e^ard with a certain contempt
the course to which it is applicable.
‘Yet how 1 many of us are insensibly
moving in a rut all the time? We
see it constantly around us, and are
apt to detect this tendency in oth
ers, but we are insensible to it in
our own case. The truth is, that
every once in a while it becomes a
man’s duty to shake himself, meta
phorically, and look around him.—
He must put his work to the test of
a little pointed, -catechising, and see
wherein it has progressed; what are
its effects upon himself and upon
others. If ho can see none, he may
be pretty sure that, like the wheel
revolving on its own axis,it is a case
of motiqn without progress. Rub
bing against one’s neighbors is a
famous thing for getting a man out
of a rut. Interchange of thought,
observation of others’ ways, mental
friction in fact—these are the rem-
edies,or at least half the cure, name
ly that half which consists in knuw-
'• ing and recognizing one’s doflcien.

Du. Edwaiid Hakky, Augusta, Ga.:
Dear Sir—For several years after coming
home from the war, I was a constant sufferer
from chills and fever. I tried a number of
remedies, but obtained no permanent relief
until I used a couple of bottles of your Mala
rial Antidote, but I think one would have
answered t lie purpose. Bkad. Ivy.
I have used Dr. Harry’s preparation for the
cure and prevention of chills and fevers with
much success and satisfaction, and confident
ly recommend It to the public for the radical
cure of this disease. A. J. Aveiiy.
Columbia, Co., May 1, 1878.
Du. Edwakii R.ykhy:
Dear Sir—It gives me pleasure to state to
you that the bottle of Fever and Ague medi
cine received from you 1ms cured my little
girl of chills and fever (who has had them ill
Intervals for eleven months), when the doc
tor's quinine and other chill medicine failed
to dp good. And would advise all who have
cases of protracted chills and fever to give
your medicine a trial at least, both for their
own good and the patronage that the medi
cine deserves. Respectfully yours,
Norwood, Ga., Oct. 12, hSSl. F. 11. McGinty.
