The Survival of the Fittest.
WAYNESBORO. OA„ A PHIL 3, 1885.
t*r The Savannah Neu'3 has re
ceived its new, fine perfecting press
and has adopted the quarto (eight
page) form. It lias always been
neat In its mechanical execution
and standard in its position as a
state journal. It is now one of the
neatest and best papers published.
titF" Hon. Thos. C. Crenshaw, of
LuUrange, bus been appointed col
lector of internal revenue for the
district of Georgia. It is a most ad
mirable appointment. Mr. Cren
shaw is a gentleman of ability, and
will execute the multifarious duties
of the office with honesty and judg
ment. It is a most acceptable ap
pointment to the people of Georgia.
The war-cloud which was
arising between England and Rus
sia seems to have rifted, though the
preparations still go on. This war
may be staved off for the present,
but come it must within tfto or
three years at the furthest. Let
our farmers prepare for this emer
gency by raising provisions, as in
their present condition this war
would be terribly disastrous to the
Southorn farmer.
tw The following named Geor
gians have received honorable ap
pointments under the new admin
istration since our last report: To
be consul of the United States to
Manchester, Eng., E. P. Howell, of
the Atlanta Constitution. To be
envoy extraordinary and minister
to Russia, A. R. Lawton, of
Savannah. Georgia is receiving her
proper share of the public offices.—
Mr. Cleveland seems to recognize
the fact that the war is over.

The prospects arc now favorable
for a fine fruit crop this year.
The pneumonia scourge is abat
ing, although several are seriously
ill with it yet.
There has been very little fishing
in the river yet, but the work will
be started soon.
Our district is alive with the open
ing of spring. The cold has passed
away so suddenly, and the change
Is so great, that we feel almost like
Wip Van Winkle.
Last Saturday our section was
visited by a Bevere hail storm.
Heavy thunder lasted all day. Much
damage was done to corn that was
planted, and to cotton seed that had
been drilled, but not covered.
Girard academy continues to grow
and flourish. Wo now have 87 pu
pils on the roll, and there are many
more yet to come. We try to do
honest work, and otlr school is bound
to grow in the favor of the people.
Last Saturday, Mr. E. J. Cochran
accidentally shot himself, the ball
entering the thigh, and lodging just
over the knee-cap. Dr. Brigham ex
tracted the ball, and dressed the
wound. It is considered not neces
sarily serious, and the patient is do
ing well.
Master Lee Bently, aged fifteen
years, died o! pneumonia on the 18th
ultimo., and was buried at Bethany
church the following day. He was
a good, industrious boy, liked by
everybody, and was his father’s old
est son, and almost only help. His
life was not without its good influ
ence.

It seems that the citizens of the
United States living in foreign coun
tries are to receive the protection
of thejgovernment under Democrat
ic administration. Secretary Whit
ney has ordered all the available
ships of the navy to Central Ameri
ca, with orders to protect American
citizens at ull hazards. This is right,
and foreign nations will now learn
that they cannot murder, rob and
impose upon citizens of the United
States with impunity as they have
done heretofore under the Radical
administration.

Cooking Ranges. Spring Cloths, OnsGmcro and Worsteds, and
will be glad to hitvo you look lit them. Re
member 1 guarantee a lit. Will be pleased to
take your measure. You will not regret pay
ing my place n visit. nv28’84tf
We, the uii'lerslgned Citizens of the follow
ing counties, have eaeli purchased Wrought
Iron Ranges and cheerfully add our testimony
to that of many others as to their superiority
and excellence In every respect over any other
stove we have ever seen or tried. These
ranges take less fuel and cook iiuieker and
more thoroughly than any cooking apparat us
now made. They are cleanly, economical and
durable, and ill our opinion their equal lias
never been made and their superior never
will be. We recommend these ranges to our
fellow citizens, feeling sure Hint should they
become purchasers, they and their families
will be thoroughly pleased, and never regret
having bought a “Home Comfort” Wrought
Iron Range.
The latest information from Wash
ington says: The nomination of
Gen. A. R. Lawton, of Georgia, to
be minister to Russia was with
drawn by the president this after
noon. This is really in Gen. Law
ton’s interest. Senator Edmunds
objected in the executive session to
his confirmation, on the ground that
his political disabilities had never
been removed. To this the Georgia
Senators responded that he had re
ceived a lull pardon from President
Johnson in 1867. Mr. Edmunds in
sisted that this did not remove his
political disabilities. He quoted
section 3 of the fourteenth amend
ment. The portions which he held
to apply to this case are as follows:
“No person shall hold any office un
der the United States, wiio having
previously taken an oath as an of
ficer of the United States to support
the constitution of tho United State,
shall have engaged in insurrection
or rebellion against the same or
given aid and comfort to tiie ene
mies thereof, but Congress may, by
a vote of two-thirds of eaelt House,
remove such disability.” Then the
Georgia Senators contended that
Gen. Lawton had never taken an
oath to support the constitution of
the United States, and that the oath
ho took was a mere oath of allegi
ance, but the Republicans seemed
determined to defeat the confirma
tion, so the nomination was with
drawn.
Of course, this action on the part
of Edmunds is not at all surprising.
He has all his life been a malignant
hater of tho South and her people,
and has in the past done her all the
harm in ids power. It is to be hoped
that other Northern senators will
not follow his example.
