Improved VORrtable Culture.
Although the spring has been very
backward, and unusual cold con
tinued, the gardener, who has kept
alive to his occupation, already sees
some results from his labors, and
feels, that in the near future he will
be fully rewarded for work expend
ed upon the gardens. Any vegeta
bles can be planted now, it is not too
late for the earliest kinds, nor too
soon for those requiring more and
steadier warmth.
Beans.—Plant on three feet beds,
drop two beans every eighteen
inches apart in the drill, any land
moderately fertile will make beans,
for early sowing use warmest up
land, bottoms give best results for
late planting. Beans can be plant
ed late in any low place among the
corn.
Cucumbers.—The best results have
been obtained by drilling seed on
three feet beds and chopping out a
hoes width apart, the cucumbers
need to be shaded, and the vines
must be thick to accomplish this.
The ground should be made very
rich.
Egg-Plants.—Sow seed In a hot
bed, with soil composed of horse ma
nure and mould, soon as plants are
large enough, set out in four feet
checks and cultivate both ways.
The trouble in growing this vegeta
ble is in getting the plants, which
are damaged by the least cold, and
are sometimes killed by a fly.
Pepper.—Sow seed in hot beds
and transplant in three feet beds
about eighteen inches apart in the
drill.
Squash.—For bush varieties plant
on four or live feet beds about three
feet in the drill, or in three feet
checks, drop six to eight seed in the
hill and thin out to two plants,
llunning varieties can be planted
In eight feet checks or on twelve
feet beds, five to six leet in the drill.
Tomatoes.—Sow seed in hot beds
and when plants are large enough
set out in three feet checks. Unless
the bushes are supported, they will
break or bend to the ground and
cause fruit to decay. Barrell hoops
with stobs nailed to them and driv
en in the ground make good sup
porters. Trellis is the best to use
where practicable in the absence of
any thing better brush answers very
well.
Muskmelons.—The great secret in
raising good muskmelons is to make
land almost as rich as a hot bed,
and keep it thoroughly cultivated
or hoed, and entirely free from
weeds. Plow ground into narrow
lands six feet wide and plant seed
in hills four feet apart on top of the
ridge.
Watermelons.—Plant in twelve
feet checks, manure in the check,
but don’t concentrate the manure
directly in the check. The best way
is to thoroughly mix it with the
earth by forking in, where the ma
nures are just thrown in the check
and left, the vines are apt to wilt.

eases of protracted chills amt fever to give
your medicine a trial at least, both for their
own good and the patronage that the medi
