Buttermilk Tor Cnlrrt and Plus.
We are asked the value of butter
milk for swine and calves, and why
it is not considered as safe to feed
without any additional feed, as
skimmed milk ?
Buttermilk, if in good condition,
has a value very similar to skim
med milk. It is slightly richer in
fat, having one per cent, and slight
ly less albuminoid matter. It is
llgured at 22 cents per 100 pounds.
It will produce a rapid growth on
calves or pigs, if it does not derange
the stomach. But buttermilk is
apt to be in a strong condition of
fermentation. This, very soon pro
duces a bad form of scours, which,
unless taken quickly, may end fa
tally. It is hardly safe to feed but
termilk without mixing one-halt
pound of finished middlings (what
farmers call “canel”) per gallon of
buttermilk. Tf it is quite sour it
should be boiled with the middl
ings. The heat will neutralize the
acidity, but it will not be as valu
able as before fermentation has
eaten up some of the food elements.
Wo often recommend keeping a
little flaxseed on hand for use in
checking scours, and it will be most
useful here. Boil one quart of flax
seed in six quarts of water. This
will become liko jelly. Stir a little
of this boiled flaxseed into the ra
tion of each calf, or into that for
several calves or pigs. The emol
lient effect of this is very soothing
to the stomach. Feeders should
not consider a few bushels of flax
seed as adding to expenses, for it is
worth all it costs, fed in small quan
tities, as promoting rapid growth.
We always use this instead of lin
seed oil, for there is danger of get
ting impure oil but the seed can be
relied upon.
Tlie llartl Working Horne.
When extraordinary exertions
are required of horses, the animal
heat expended, and the muscular
tissue wasted by the extra exercise
make It necessary that they be
much more liberally fed, prepara
tory to hard driving or heavy work,
than when mainly idle. Trial has
sometimes been made upon post
horses and others kept for rapid
travelling, by giving grain alone,
and the result uniformly is that fer
mentation takes the place of diges
tion, evidenced by the intolerable
odor of the droppings. The glass of
the windows where horses so fed
are stabled, will be found, after a
year or two, to be decomposed to
such a degree as to lose the lively
appearance and become brittle.
This comes from the action of the
sulphuretted hydrogen upon the
lead contained in the glass. Na
ture intended the horse to eat a ya-
riety of food, and while his stomach
Is smaller than that of the ox, he
nevertheless needs provender, and
a variety of this with his grain.
The horse can only be put in an
improved condition for extraordi
nary exertion by feeding in advance
of the work. Under rapid work di
gestion is suspended, hence, the
horse, under severe daily work,
should be fed his largest feed at
night, that the principal food of the
day may be digested and assimilat
ed during the night’s rest. In a
state of nature the horso is built up
in advance of his usual require
ments, but under the artificial con
ditions in which we have placed
him, a good deal of attention is
required that the necessary aids to
onablo the horse to meet these con
ditions, be extended to him. No
portion of this aid can bo given him
through the agency of a heavy feed,
with the idea that this will shield
him from cold and give vigor to
his muscle. On the other hand, a
full feed, soon before going out, op
presses, dulls the horse for .'work,
and through digestion being retard
ed, renders the animal more sus
ceptible to cold than he otherwise
would be. A full ration at night is
fully digested, and mainly assimil
ated by morning, and whatever
appetite the horse may have in the
morning, after a full night’s feed is
re i l - ifisfleil by a small feed, as
wn . ;g tiou sets in, the nervous
• u ic- are expended in the pro
cess and desire for more food dis
appears.
Western (lint.) Sporhwian: Train
ers here owing to the severe weath
er of the past week have been un
able to do anything with the horses
in their charge and the outlook at
present is exceedingly unfavorable.
Even if the elements were in their
favor, the truck is in no condition
to train on, nor is the managements
making any endeavors to put it in
shape. This will probably lie the
last Season trainers will attempt to
handle their horses to any extent
over this track,provided of course
that the present management con
tinue to control affairs.
All in all, the fat cattle exhibit at
New Orleans was one long to be
remembered, and worthy of more
attention than has been generally
vouchsafed to it.
