Sensible Minis on Breeding.
The use of a younger and better
class of mares by successful Ken
tucky breeders than are generally
kept for brood purposes in the North
is probably one of the chief causes
of the larger proportion of superior
animals raised by them than has
been produced in any of the North
ern states. Miss Russell was but 9
years old when she brought the
present queen of the turf, and the
same mare produced Nutwood
(2:18?4) in her 5-year-old form.—
Midnight was put to breeding when
but !1 years old, and was lil when
she produced the little black trot
ting wonder, which, if he comes to
the wire in good lorm next season,
will undoubtedly place to bis credit
a faster record before its close than
has yet been made by any trotter in
single harness.
Betsy Trotwood, the dam of Phal
lus, was but!) years old the season
the latter was foaled. Ouida was
10 years old when she broughtTrin-
kot, and Kate Crockett the same
age when Lula was foaled. Ned
was 15 years old the season she pro
duced Clemmie G. Lizzie Wither
spoon was but 7 years past when
her daughter, Fanny Witherspoon,
was foaled, and Miss Coons brought
Wilson in her 6-year-old form.—
Black Bess was also 6 when she
produced Darby, but Dolly was 16
the season she dropped Director,
which was her ninth foal. At 11
years of age Mag Ferguson brought
Piedmont, and Little Ida, the dam
of Ho-So, was 7 when she dropped
that speedy daughter of George
Wilkes. Lady Thorn, Jr., was but
5 years old when she dropped Santa
Claus, and Sally Chorister was 9
when she foaled Proteine. Wood
bine produced Wedgewood when 16
years old. It is true that old mares
sometimes produce fast trotters, but
it is also a fact that Kentucky
breeders have produced their fast
est trotters from comparatively
young mares which had never dis
tinguished themselves upon the
turf. It requires considerable capi
tal to stock a farm with young,
sound, well-shaped and well-bred
brood-mares, yet, there is no doubt
that those who select such will be
much more successfull in a term of
years than those who stock up with
a cheap class of animals. Young
men just entering upon the busi
ness of breeding had better select
at least one mare for brood purposes
that possesses all the qualifications
which they wish to produce in the
offspring, and is free from defects.
One such animal has often proved
the stepping-stone to fortune. Miss
Russell, Green Mountain Maid nnd
Alma Mater are few of the many
that might be named of this class.—
Alma Mater is now hut 16 years
old, yet the amount realized by her
prosent owners from the sale of her
produce has already reached $10,500.
It is true that such instances are ex
tremely rare, yet the fact should
not be forgotten by those just en
tering the breeding ranks that a
very large proportion of the most
valuable horses yet produced were
from young dams.

American Agriculturalist for Huy.
Some apiarists practice clipping
one wing of each Queen. Then
when a swarm issues from the hive,
she cannot follow, but crawls about
upon the ground in front of the
hive. Tile bee-keeper catches,
cages, and lays her aside in the
shade, moves the old hive to a new
location, and by the time the swarm
has decided to return, because it
has no queen, he has a new hive
similar in appearance to the old
one, upon the old stand, and the
bees, taking it for their old home,
enter it, and while they are going
in, the queen is allowed to run in
with them. Thus the bees hive
themselves without being allowed
to cluster. An objection to this
method is, that queens are. some
times lost in the grass. When a
swarm of bees returns, it may enter
the wrong hive, and if it makes no
mistake in this direction, it occa
sionally clusters all over the out
side of the hive, and remains there
a long time before entering. If the
queen is allowed to enter the hive
too soon, she may come out again,
thinking, perhaps, that she has not
“swarmed,” and the bees follow her.
There are some indications that
clipped queens are regarded by the
lines with dissatisfaction, and are
thus more liable to lie superceded.
A queen that is lost can often be
found by looking for the little knot
of bees that usually accompanies
her. if a swarm attempts to enter
the wrong hive, a sheet can bo
thrown oyer tho hive. If a queen
Is not given to a swarm until the
bees begin to show signs ot uneasi
ness, she is not apt to leave the
hive. When the queen is undip
ped, a swarm will usually soon dus
ter upon the branch of some tree.
