I’ersn Trees.
Valdosta Nows.
It is not generally known, per
haps, that Lowndes county can
boast of more pecan trees than any
other in Georgia, but such is the
case. Major Holliday first com
menced planting them twelve or
fifteen years ago, 'and since then
quite a number of citizens have
bought trees from his nursery and
planted them out. Mr. Tom Craw
ford has ten acres, about seven
miles from town, which he planted
ten years ago. His orchard is do
ing well, and one of the trees bore
last year and two will bear this
year. Mr. Crawford says it takes
ten years for the trees to bear, and
fifteen to be profitable. There is a
large pecan tree on Marion Nel
son’s place in town, set out by Mal
colm Crawford about tweftty-flve or
thirty years ago, from which $25 to
$30 worth of pecans are sold each
year. It was from seeing a the re
sults from this tree that induced
Mr. Crawford to plant his orchard,
and he says his venture is coming
fully up to his expectations. Cap
tain Wells has about seventy-five
or eighty trees on his place in town
five or six years old which are look
ing finely, but too young to bear.—
Among others having bearing trees
in their yards in town are Mrs. Josh
Griffin arid Mrs. Hesant. Mr. John
Beatty, on ;C ft t creek, has bearing
trees on his place, and Mr. Craw
ford estimates that there are at
least f>00 bearing trees in this coun
ty, all young, besides the very ltlrge
number coming on. There is a tree
in Berrien county, owned by Mr.
Futch from which he sells large
quantities of nuts in Valdosta every
year.
Parties in Darien, Ga., derive a
large income from their pecan
trees. A gentleman in Mississippi
had a vacant place in front of his
house which he planted in pecans
more for the shade than anything
else, and eventually found them
more valuable than all the rest of
his plantations. It is well known
that vast quantities of pecans are
profitably grown in Texas. Thirty
or forty thousand dollars worth are
brought into Indianola and sold
every year. The pecan tree re
sembles very much the hickory nut
tree, is very tough and hardy, and
takes such astonishingly firm root
in the ground that storms have not
been known to blow them over.
The trees should be planted about
thirty feet apart. They constitute
as handsome and efficient shade
trees as any other. From state
ments which have been made to us
by those who ought to know we be
lieve with Mr. Crawford and others
who have planted them that there
is a bonanza in pecans. They do
not bear as early, but in the long
run a pecan grove in Georgia
would be more valuable than an
orange grove in Florida, because
they are not liable to the same dis
asters. Mr. Crawford believes that
English walnuts would do well in
Georgia also. He has one on his
place in town about six years old,
too young to bear yet, but growing
finely and rapidly. Major Holli
day has one on his place. In view
of all these facts it is confidently
expected that these trees will be
largely planted in this section in
future.

Dr. Edward Barky, Augusta, Git.:
Dear Sir—For several years after coming

Car. of tko Orrli.nl,
In answer to the question, “How
can w'Qi make our apple orchards
productive and profitable?” Presi
dent Barry, of the Western New
York Horticultural Society, in his
"address at the last annual meeting,
said: “Without attempting any
details of orchard culture, l would
say that to make orchards produc
tive anti profitable the fertility of
the soil must be maintained by the
use of suitable fertilizers, so that
that the trees will make tv vigorous,
annual growth. Judicious pruning
must be given, nud insert enemies
kepi in subjection. Then when the
fruits are grown, and well grown,
they must have proper care in gath
ering, assorting, packing and mark
eting. All these require skill and
watchfulness at every step. Orch
arding, even in our favored section,
cannot be made profitable without
thoroughness in every detail.
