ltoasteil A lire by a Mob.
Washington, Auk., St*i>f 7.—A
inob on Humbly night visited the
Tike county jail, at Murfreesboro,
and made an attempt to shoot the
Polk boys, confined for murder, but
not being able to get them in range, I
the mob hauled a lot of wood, piled
it around the iron cell, saturated
the wood with coal oil, and literally
roasted both prisoners alive. Noth
ing is standing but the brick walls
of the jail. The Polks murdered a
peddler last year, and have had
several trials. The affair has creat
ed great excitement, and this was
the third effort by mobs to kill
them.
A Remarkable Cane.
Petersburg, Va., Sept. 8.—In
formation just received states that
a singular ease is now puzzling the
physicians in Dinwiddie county, in
this state. A day or two ago,
Henry Hains, a resident in the
above named county, had an old
musket, in the barrel of which the
ramrod became tightly fastened.
All his efforts to get it out proved
unavailing. Finally, however, he
got a companion to aid him while
he attempted to pull the ramrod
out. The musket was loaded only
with powder. It was discharged,
the ramrod striking him below the
nipple, passing through his body
and nailing him securely to the log
cabin, against which lie had his
back. The ramrod was imbedded
in the logs of the cabin, and had to
be cut out and then drawn from the
unfortunate boy's body with great
force. A remarkable feature of the
case is that Ilains, who is only 14
years of age, is still alive. The case
is being written up for the State
Medical Journal.
A Snake In a lied Tick,
rhlliulelpliln Times.
“Ma, I believe there’s a mouse in
my bed!” exclaimed a young lady
near Antietan Junction. Her
mother was not so much alarmed
by the remark as she would have
been if it had related to the mater
nal bed, but suggested that the
young lady should investigate.
The bed clothing was hauled off
and the mouse did not make its
appearance. The mattress was
then tilted off the bedstead, but no
mouse.
“My child, you are nervous,” said
the mother; “go to sleep and don’t
tlnnk about it any more.”
About midnight the girl gave a
loud scream and jumped out of bed
in a hurry. The bed clothes were
hastily dragged off and the mat
tress shaken, but the mouse was
not forthcoming.
“I am sure I felt it move then,”
sobbed the frightened maiden. “I
know it’s something.”
The mother calmed the nervous
young lady with difficulty, and tried
to induce her to go to sleep. She
did not do so however, until placed
in the spare room in a bed of gener
ous proportions, and above all sus
picion of harboring mice. The next
day a rigid investigation was held.
Nothing less than cutting open the
mattress would satisfy the young
lady.
There wasn’t any mouse. In
stead of that, when the lied tick
was cut open and its contents emp
tied on the floor, a garter snake two
feet long wriggled out, half scar
ed to death. A broomstick calmed
the snake’s nerves forever in a short
time. It is suppossed that a stray
snake egg was sewed up in the
mattress with the shucks which
constituted the bulk of its stuffing.
A Macon special to the Atlanta
( ’onxtitution describes the unfortun
ate condition of a man named Whit
ten in that city who crawls about
the streets on his hands and knees,
his legs being interlocked as to
throw his feet up behind his back.—
When asked the cause of his crip
pled condition, Whitten said that it
was due to fever, from which he
suffered when four years old. The
severity of the fever rendered his
legs and feet useless. From his
waist up, he grew as any other man
would, but bis legs and feet remain
ed like those of a young child, lie
showed the Conxtitu!io/i'x corres
pondent his right leg. It was about
five inches In circumference at the
largest part. Whitten was very
cheerful, and said that the good peo
ple of the towns he visited never
allowed him to suffer for lack of
food, raiment or shelter. He was
born within twenty miles of At
lanta.
Fourteen years ago Mr. Foster,
then working on the old North and
South road, drilled a hole in a rock
near Chamber’s saw mill, soven
miles from Home. He had drilled
some 2 inches when there came an
order to suspend work. On Friday,
the same man who is now employ
ed by Rearing & Co., the con
tractors for the Home and Carroll
ton, drilled the same hole to the
depth ot about 18 inches, put in the
charge which had been fourteen
years delayed and blew up the rock.
