A dispatch from Onuthti, Nob.,
of September loth, says: A mob of
citizens of Chester, Neb., started
out late Saturday night to bang
Warren Coon, a blacksmith, who
had repeatedly beaten his wife and
threatened to burn the town. For
several days he had been drunk
and had whipped his wife several
times. 11 is threat to destroy the
town excited the citizens and cul
minated in a determination to hang
him. They surrounded the house,
captured Coon and were about to
lynch him, when his wife pleaded
for him on her knees and prayed to
heaven and to the mob to spare
him and to give him one more
chance to be a man. Coon finally
followed suit, prayed on his bended
knees, and promised on oath over a
bible never again to mistreat his
wife and to stop drinking. Upon
the understanding that a violation
of his oath would result in hanging,
the mob concluded to let him have
another chance, and thereupon dis
persed.
The Chinese Must Ho.
Rawlins, Wy. T., Sept. 10.—The
Knights of Labor have taken up
the cudgel aga'instthe Chinese, and
the ultimate expulsion of the 'Mon
golians from the territory is prob
able. Mr. Neesham, representing
the Union Pacific division of the
Knights of Labor, arrived here yes
terday, and was met by Mr. Brom-
ly, representing President Adams,
of the Union Pacific. Company.
Both spent the day in looking into
the causes of the anti-Chinese de
monstration. It was shown that
the Chinese were brought back
against their wishes. Mr. Neesham
left for Denver last night, lie said
to a correspondent: “The infor
mation I received to-day astounds
me. The situation is desperate and
calls for heroic measures.” It is
feared that there will lie trouble
unless the Union Pacific company
recedes from its position, and sends
the Chinese out of the country. It
is probable, however, that tins mat
ter will settle itself m a few days
without interference from any one.
The Chinese here are becoming de
moralized.
BO of them hoarded yesterday’s
west-bound express, and a like
number set out for the west on
foot, with their baggage on their
backs. The white miners wore told
that they could go back to work
this morning, and will likely do so
unless an attempt is made to work
Chinese with them. So far the
Chinese have been afraid to go
down into the mines, and have
consequently been idle since the
riot.
