WAYNESBORO (!A„ OCTOBER 2!. 1385
z&r Tlie Atlanta Constant inn is
authority for saying that t ho legis
lature used only two cakes of toilet
soap during the late session—and
not a towel was marked in the bill.
They certainly deserve commenda
tion for economy in these particu
lars, but the great question which
is agitating the country, but which
we hope, however, will be kept out
of the next canvass, is: How did
our solons dry their faces? Some
of them might probably have got
along, but those who only wore
‘'shams” were badly equipped for
the emergency. We hone some of
the veterans who by reason of great
strength of constitution survived
this long period of time, and have
been through great mercy allowed
to return to the bosom of their now
anoient-and much diminished con
stituency, will answer this mo-
meatus question, and put it forever
at rest.
IIKICK IT IS.
A returned representative was
anxious to known where we ob
tained our information to the ef
fect that the notorious John E. Iiry-
ant was at the head of the prohibi
tion movement and had engineered
much of the action of the houso of
representatives at its late session.—
We had thought this report had ap
peared so often in the public jour
nals that it needed no confirmation.
But to satisfy our interrogator, and
to inform him that this opinion
is largely entertained by the “sub
sidized press” an people of Georgia,
wo publish tbe following extract
from the Atlanta correspondent of
the Macon Telegraph:
“Sam Small preached a temper
ance sermon at a colored church
along with Capt. Bryant. Small
harped upon the same old string,
and alluded to Bryant as “Brother
Bryant.” Bryant told the niggers
that the only way in which they
could get their rights in Georgia and
the South was to go with the Chris
tian people for prohibition. They
could gain tbe friendship, respect
and love in no other way. lie made
a cunning speech, the shrewed ras
cal, and is undoubtedly hoodwink
ing the respectable people here
who have gone crazy on the tem
perance idea.”
Does our inquirer want more ev
idence? If so, it is is accumulative
and accumulating, and he shall
have it, The “wn-subsidized” press
and these politicians—demagogues,
rather—find their “Brother Bryant”
a bitter pill to swallow in open day
light and in the presence of their
Democratic constituency. But, gen
tlemen, don’t make any wry faces
—you must swallow the nauseating
dose—and like the little book which
St. John, the Evangelist, was com
manded to “take and eat up,” you
will find it “made in your belly bit-
.ter, but in your mouth sweet
as honey.” Now mark these words:
The temperance question will
be the paramount question of the
next canvass—the piping has al
ready been laid, and Bryant has
crept into it, and be will come out
at that end of the pipe w hich disem
bogues in the house of representa
tives of Georgia, and will go hence
fully uniformed and equipped to
dictate tlie action of the great Dem
ocratic party of Georgia!

Justice courts have but littlo new business,
though the constables are constantly at work
on old. claims, and nearly every levy made,
raises two or more claimants which gener
ally ends in a compromise, somebody paying
costs, which is about all tlie money that
changes hands.
We notice that considerable cotton passes
down from Jefferson county, to Waynesboro,
by wagons lately. Some attribute this to
Jefferson being aitry county; lie tills as It

On Saturday about half past 6 o’clock p. m.,

shock which was distinctly felt by every one.
At an Interval of about fifteen minutes, there
was another, though not so loud as tlie first.
No perceptible disturbance of old earth’s
equilibrium was noticed with this. No dam
age as far as heard from, though there was con
