Savannah Morning News
Savannah, Oa.,October 20.— r l'he
Arm of Messrs. Walter, Tison & Go.,
of this city, lias for several days
been trying to unearth the perpe
trator of what would have been a
very clever swindle had it not been
prevented.
About a week ago the house re
ceived a telegram dated, Smithville,
Oa., signed B. W. Bellamy. The
dispatch asked that a New York
check for $2,100 be forwarded to him
at once. Bellamy having done busi
ness with the firm for years they
promptly responded. It happened
that the same day Col. J. B. Creech,
of Quitman, called at the firm’s of
fice on the Bay. Col. Creech, who
is the agent for tho house at Quit-
man, was shown the telegram, lie
doubted the genuineness of the dis
patch, and upon investigation learn
ed that Mr. Bellamy was at his
home, about 15 miles from Quit-
man, and that the. telegram was
not genuine.
Information to this effect was
wired to Tison & Co., and they in
turn instructed the postmaster at
Bmithvillo to return the letter to
them, which was promptly done.—
Who signed the telegram is a mys
tery, and as the firm declined yes
terday to give any information
about the matter, it is presumed
that no very definite clue has yet
been obtained.

—Our sales of Mexican female remedy;
Chillarinc and M. A. Simmons’ liver medi
cine are tremendous. Scott & Co., Roanoke,
Vtt., May ID, 1884.
Louisville, Georgia, October
18, 1885.—About sundown yester
day evening, our citizens were
alarmed by a rumbling noise like
distant thunder, and directly after
wards there was a slight shock,
causing the people to run out and
inquire from their neighbors: “Did
you feel that rumbling and hear
that noise?” At the same time the
sky was almost cloudless and no
appearance of lightning. We have
no doubt but that it was a slight
shock from some distant earth
quake.
—Mexican female remedy sells exceeding
ly well. W. 11. Burt, M. D., Duwspnville, La.
