The Survival of the Fittest.
WAYNESBORO GA., NOVEMBER li. 18S5
(Ifi(MtH)l'K NKW8 FOB THE HEHUCBATS.
The news from the elections
which occurred Tuesday is all glo
rious for the Democracy. Ten days
before the election all was gloom
for the Democrats in the great state
of New York, but when Logan,
Sherman and Fornker mistook
their latitude, and began to wave
the blood stained garment, the peo
ple of New York showed their in
telligence and appreciation of the
cause of peace by putting their seal
of condemnation upon sectional
prejudice. With a week it is esti
mated that 1 (),()00 votes changed
from the Republicans to the Demo
crats, while 5,000 others refused to
endorse Sherman’s venom, and re
fused to vote at all. This gave Hill
(Rem.) a majority over Davenport
(Rep.) of at least 25,000. Well done,
Democrats of New York!
Virginia, that grand old mother
of states, has forever buried Ma-
hono and his corrupt ragmufflns
under a majority of between 25,000
and 30,000. All hale, Virginia!
Maryland and Colorado nave gone
Democratic by largo majorities.—
Illinois went Republican by about
5.000, again of 00,000 ,or 70,000 to
the Democrats. Some of the states
maintained their Republican ma
jorities, but in the greater number
of them were marked Democratic
gains. We are satisfied with the
general results.
T1ii> Fair.
The present week has heon lair week, and
our city him been full of strangers. The show
<pf line horses was simply super!)—Indeed, It
could not be excelled. The racing was very
fine, and wo are proud to know that, It exhib
ited a marked improvement In the breeds of
hors,.s of the county. Many vorv fine colts
were on exhibition, and In a year or two
more Burlce county will become famous for
its fine horses. This feature alone Is enough
to render the results of the fair a victory. We
are sorry to be compelled to say that the other
departments were not so well represented.—
The ladles department exhibited some very
fine articles, hut it was by no means full. We
earnestly urge the Indies to make better pre
paration In the future. Truth oompolls us to
say that the agricultural display was simply
a failure, with other departments little or no
better. For months we have urged our peo
ple to give their county fair the Importance
which It deser ves, but they hove failed to do
so. We can but hope the future will tell a
better story.

THE WO UK OWES OX
Under the above caption, the Au-
QustS Vlirrmicle one day last week
printed the following paragraph
taken from a communication of our
Richmond correspondent:
“Parties with malicious intent
have, on three separate occasions,
placed obstructions on the Narrow
Gauge railroad, near McLean.—
Monday evening a crosstie was
found on the track immediately
over the tressel work over McBeun
civek. Track laying force on the
Augusta, Gibson and Sandersville
railroad have ceased their opera
tions. Trains run within four miles
-of Gibson. Some time will elapse
before the road is completed to that
little town. Some of the force have
been suspended, others are at work
finishing up work on that portion
of the road in operation.”
The Chronicle makes toe follow
ing comments upon the above par
agraph :
“President Mitchell says the fore
going paragraph from The True
Citizen is founded on misapprer
henslon, and is calculated to mis
lead the public and injure the Au
gusta, Gibson and Sandersville rail
road. He says the work has not
stopped on the road at all, but that
owing to an unavoidable delay in
getting out certain timbers needed
in the construction of the trestle,
prudent and economical manage
ment demanded the discharge for
a while, of the hands employed.—
As soon as the necessary timbers
are procured the full force will pro
ceed as before. The work is going
right ahead, and the people of Gib
son will hear the whistle blow be
fore they anticipate.”
We have not the slightest inten
tion of going into a controversy
over the matter, and only notice it
at all to set our correspondent right
before our readers. He had no in
tention of injuring the railroad, hut
gave the paragraph as a legitimate
news item, and derived bis infor
mation from a respectable and relia
ble source. Rut if the»item lacked
endorsement, President Mitchell
has admitted every assertion made
by our correspondent. President
Mitchell Anils himself, if correctly
reported, in the anomalous condi
tion of denying and admitting in
the same breath. We cannot see
how a simple and plain news item
could injure the road, and hope that
President Mitchell and onr Augus
ta contemporary will not grow so
very nervous over so small a tit-bit.
We have always admired President
Mitchell’s pluck, energy and almost
unparalleled financial ability in
carrying to success so great an en
terprise with so little means.

Tricks o! the Trade
Tho usual number of trlcksturs wero on
hand at the lair this week plying their vari
ous trades. They went on smoothly until
Friday noon, when Home one Instigated their
arrest—probably some one who had lost
money at their tables. Some eight or ten
men wore nrrestod and carried beforo Judgo
Perry of the county court, and were fined
from $5 to |25 and costs. TIioto wore two
women In the party who wero arrested, and
who, wo learn, will be tried this (Suturduj-)
morning. While no moral citizen can coun-
tcimiifu gambling or tricks, there Is an evld-
cutund outspoken sentiment In favor of tlieso
people. They had paid for the privilege of
running tlioir business, and, II Is contended,
that they should not have been allowed to
commence and run their business for two
days qulotly If they were to bo this roughly
deult with. There Is considerable excitement
over the matter, and the man who lost his
money, and then caused all the trouble Is
openly denounced.
