The Survival of the Fittest.
WAYNESBORO OA„ DECEMBER 11. 1883.
CONGBKSS—THK I’llESIDKM'S MKSSAUK.
Congress met Monday, and
promptly organized by electing
lion. John Sherman, of Ohio, presi
dent of the senate, and consequent
ly vice-president, and in case of
President Cleveland’s death or disa
bility he becomes president. Car
lisle, of Ky., was elected speak* r of
the house. The Republicans con
trol the senate by eight majority,
while the Democrats have full pos
session of the house.
The refusal of both Edmunds and
Logan to accept the presidency ot
the senate, which either might have
had by consenting, was a real sur
prise to the country. They, of
course, would have the country be
lieve that their refusal was caused
by their natural inate modesty and
virtue, but when we apply the test
of past action, we doubt these rea
sons, and must attribute their re
fusal to some cause hidden from
public gaze in their own dark
hearts. Such ambitious politicians
as Edmunds and Logan never al
low their modesty to stand in the
way of their preferment. Of the
three, Sherman, Logan and Ed
munds, we would vastly have pre
ferred Edmunds, even with all his
venom. So far as Sherman is con
cerned, the South can expect no
favors at his hands when opportu
nity presents itselt for him to do
her violence by his rulings.
The United States being at peace
with all the world, no foreign ques
tion can present itself tor the con
sideration of congress. The nation
al legislature will, therefore, confine
its labors to domestic questions.—
Among these,we apprehend, will be
the consideration of the revision of
the present tariff laws. Upon this
question the division stands high
protective tariff, and a tariff for rev
enue only, regardless of party lines.
The high tariff party is hacked by
the maufacturers who clamor for
protection, and will use money to se
cure a high tariff; the revenue men
claim that the time, has passed for
protection to manufactories in this
country long ago, and that to tax
the many to enrich the few is down
right robbery. We shall await the
action of congress upon this ques
tion with interest.
It is likely that the internal rev
enue laws will come up for conside
ration, and an attempt be made to
repeal them. These measures
orriginated as war measures and as
the war has ceased, they should
have been repealed when the crash
of arms became still.
The president’s message is volu
minous and exhaustive. It cavass-
es every subject of n<4itical policy
to be thought of, and is pronounced
by the public press to be an able
and comprehensive state paper.—
We have severely censured Mr.
Cleveland for his civil service poli
cy. Such a law is wrong and does
violence to all political principle.
This is what is termed “the long
session,” and will probably hold un
til the first of next August. Some
of the time of the members will be
spent in the marble halls of the na
tional capitol making speeches to
empty seats, much more time will
be spent around the festive board
enjoying fine dinners, but the great
er portion of the time will be ex
pended in juggling for a return.—
Once let a man taste the sweets of
public office, and he is ruined for
anything else—the greater the office
the greater the ruin. Hut it must
be so—some men must be fortunate.

THE GREAT VANDERBILT IS DEAD.
A dispatch from Now York, da
ted the 8th inst., startled the coun
try by announcing that the great
millionaire, William II. Vanderbilt,
had fallen dead at his home on
Fifth A venue, that morning.
If money makes a man rich, Van
derbilt was rich—the richest man
m the United States, probably in
the world, as he was said to have
been wortii more than .$200,000,000.
But he was a cold, selfish man, and
with all his great wealth will little
be mourned by the world.
Vanderbilt leaves a wife, eight
children an nineteen grand children
to inherit his millions, and it is
probable that much of all this hord
ed wealth will again go into circu
lation. The eyes of the world is
now turned upon his sons, and the
question asked, do any of them pos
sess the financial ability to take (lie
pla^e of the old commodore? Time
alone can develop, but it is hardly
to he Supposed that his equal for
accumulating wealth will be seen
soon, if ever, again on earth.
But Death had no respect for
Vanderbilt's wealth, and to-day ho
is no richer than the unknown pau
per whose body lies under tlit* green
sod in the Potter’s field.

DEATH OEGEORGE 0. ROBINSON.
Our readers with one accord will
heave a sigh of sorrow when their
eyes fall upon the announcement of
the deatli of George O. Robinson,
the manager of the great Music
House of the South, which sad
event occurred a’t his homo in
Grovetown, a few miles from Au
gusta, on the Georgia railroad, last
Saturday, after a long and painful
illness. Air. Robinson was a good
man, and Ids mime had become
familiar all oyer Georgia and the
adjoining states, and wherever it is
known sorrow will he felt for his
death. But why should we mourn
ids earthly death, when we believe
he has hut gone to the reward of
the good, and has entered into a
happy eternity, lie leaves a wife
and several children to mourn the
loss of an atfectlouato husband
and kind father, and to whom wo

Warren Leland,
whom everybody knows os tho successful
manager of the
Largest Hotel Enterprises
of America, says that while a passenger fron
New York on board a ship going around Capo
Horn, in tho early days of emigration to Cal
ifornia, he learned that ono of tho olllccrs of
tho vessel had cured himself, during tho voy
age, of an obstinate disease by tho uso of
Ayer's Sarsaparilla. .
Slnco then Mr. LELAND has recommended
AVER’S SAiisArAHiLLA in many similar
oases, and ho lias never yet heard of its fail
ure to effect a radical cure.
Some years ago one of Mr. Leland’s fann
laborers brulsod his leg. Owing to tho bad
stato of his blood, an ugly scrofulous swelling
or lump appeared on the Injured limb. Ilor-
rililo itching of tho skin, with burning and
darting pains through the lump, made lifo
almost intolerable. The leg became enor
mously enlarged, and running ulcers formed,
discharging great quantities of extremely
offensive matter. No treatment was of any
avail until the man, by Mr. Leland's direc
tion, was supplied with Ayer's Sarsapa-
ltlLLA, which allayed tho pain and irritation,
lioalod tho sores, removed the swolling, and
completely restored tho limb to uso.
Mr. Lei,AMD has personally used
Ayers Sarsaparilla
for Rheumatism, with entire success ; ar.d,
after careful observation, declares that, lu
his belief, there is no medicino in tho world
equal to it for tho cure of Liver Disorders,
Gout, the effects of high living, Salt
ltheiim, Sores, Eruptions, and all the
various forms of blood diseases.
We Uavo Mr. I,eland’s permission to invito
all who may dsslro further evidence in regard
to tho extraordinary curativo powers of
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla to seo him person
ally either at his mammoth Ocean Hotel,
Long Branch, or at the popular Leland Hotel,
Broadway, 27th and 28th Streets, New York.
Mr, Iceland's extensive knowledge of tho
good done by this unequalled eradicator of
blood poisons enablos him to give inquirers
much valuable information.

M0 WE POWER THEREOF,
D IRECTED by a long experience In tiie Dry Goods Trade, has enabled me to outst rip all
former efforts in buying my Fall and Winter Stock of Dry Goods, and I ask tho pur
chasing public of Waynesboro and surrounding country In examine my Stock and prices
before purchasing elsewhere, for I think that in so doing they will consult their own inter
est. Having just returned from New York where the market was Hooded with goods, and
all trying to got the mighty dollar, and having that article with me, It enabled me to get a
larger discount, and that'discount I propose to give to my customers. These facts are
worthy tho consideration of all persons buying dry goods. It Is useless to try to enumerate
Goods and Prices; (lie different Departments named are all full and complete. Ladlis’
Dress Goods of all kinds and prices. Cloaks, Dolmans. Jerseys for Ladies and Children, now
shades of Jersey Cloili for Children’s Hacks. In Ladles’ am Misses’ llose, all kinds. A lull
line of Brussels and Plain Velvets a id Velveteens, Batins, Black and Colored Silks, Ac.
C^rents'’ Department.
I only ask you to look and judge for yourself. If I should commence to name very-
tlilng T might say too touch. Notions of all kinds, Blankets and Flannels of all grades.
Table Damasks, Towels, and, in fact, everythin# to be found in a First-class Dry Goods store,
l warrant everything l sell to l;c what it is recommended to be. Polite attention to all,
whether they purchase or not. Mourning Goods I make a specialty. Dutch Boltin# Cloths
