THE Survival of the Fittest.
WAYNESBORO GA„ DECEMBER 18. 18X5
The political disabilities of
General A. R. Lawton (if there
were any,) have been formerly re
moved by congress.
er Senators Sherman, Logan,
Hale, Hoar and others bitterly op
posed the confirmation of appoint
ments made by the president du
ring the recess of congress, hut sig
nally failed to unite the Republi
can forces. Well, all that can be
expected of vicious dogs are snarls.
Waycross Headlight: The
Waynesboro True Citizen is one
of the most reliable of our ex
changes.
While we thank our Waycross
contemporary for the above flatter
ing notice, wo can sincerely return
the compliment. The. Headlight is
always a welcome visitor to our
sanctum.
tw After a most thorough in
vestigation before United States
District Judge McCoy in the late
prohibition trial, in Atlanta, the
Judge decided that the United
States had no jurisdiction over the
matter. Immediately application
was made to Judge Clarke, of the
superior court of Fulton county, for
a temporary injunction restraining
Ordinary Calhoun from declaring
the result of the election. The in
junction was granted late Thurday
night, and the case must now go
through another investigation ii
the state courts. The Prohibition
ists are, however, confident of final
success.
(IKM. TOOMBS IS DEAD.
On last Tuesday evening General
Robert Toombs breathed his last at
his home in Washington, Ga., as
peacefully ns an infant falls to
sleep. A great light has gone out—
be was the last of that cluster of
illustrious Georgians, and there is
none lelt like him! Georgia claims
him as her son, but his fame be
longs to the whole South, for
whose liberties he labored, and to
which he devoted his whole life,
never swerving or faltering in his
devotion to his native South.—
When the oppessor became mad
with fanaticism and would no lon
ger hear reason, he abandoned the
forum and encouraged his people
to appeal to arbitrament of the
sword, and flinching from no duty,
bared his breast to the storm of war
on many a bloody and well-fought
field. And when borne down by
overwhelming numbers, and there
were few left to answer “roll call,”
he disdained to fly to the tyrant,
as others did, and on bended knees
supplicate to kiss the hand which
had struck the terrible blow, or lap
the dust from the destroyer’s feet.—
But retiring to his ruined home, he
bussied himself in encouraging his
people to apply themselyes to re
pair the ravages of war. To. the
day of his death ho scorned to plead
guilty to a crime which he had not
committed, or ask mercy for a
wrong which ho had not done.
His name and fame are as wide as
the civilized world.
Only a year or two ago General
Toombs met the sad misfortune of
loosing his wife, a noble Christian
woman, for whom the lapse of the
half centurery which she had walk
ed by. his side had not dulled the
ardent and tender affection of the
youthful husbud. He had met ca
lamity in terrible form before, he
had seen liis three tenderly beloved
daughters die, one by one, but this
last great blow was more that he
could bear, and overwhelmed with
grief he never ceased to mourn for
his loved and lost companion. And
now in that berelt chamber, the
old man wifeless and childless,
heard that still, small voice, in the
still hours of the night, whisper:
“Como unto mo all ye who labor
and are heavy ladened, and I will
give you rest!” Yielding with the
confidence of a little child, ho found
the Saviour precious to his soul—
the earnest prayers of that noble
wife which hud assended daily for
many years in behalf of her affec-
tionate husband, more than for the
great man had been answered.—
Death came and found him washed
and made clean in the bllood of the
Lamb, and he fell gently to sleep
in the arms of that Jesus who Is
mighty to save!
On Thursday morning ho was
laid to rest by the sldo of that
wife whom in life he had loyod so
well, where let them sleep until
that greut day when the grave shull
give up its dead.

A post office has been established
at Blythe, on the A., G. A 8., R. It.,
24 miles from Augusta, and Virgil
J. Murrow appointed post master.
In the death of Hon. Robert
Toombs, the state looses one of its
foremost men, an able counselor
and a factor m politics without an
equal. He was an illustrious mas
on.
Miss Mollie Luckie, who resides
in the upper portion of this county,
fell a few davs ago down the steps
at Crown Point school house, and
dislocated one of her shoulders.
The failure of the M. 8. E. Asso
ciation, located at Fort Worth, Tex
as, causes a great many in this coun
ty to loose. The public would do
well to steer clear of such institu
tions in the future. There are in
surance companies doing business
in the state that have a national
reputation, and people should re
member this fact when solicitors
for these new concerns seek busi
ness for them. It is a little strange
that Rev. Mr. 1). Rurkehead, of At
lanta, should have taken such a
decided stand for the Fort Worth
concern. His influence caused
many to “go in” that otherwise
would have “remained out.”
An accident on the A., G. «& S.
R. R. last Friday, delayed the east
bound train about 12 hours. The
engine was derailed a few miles this
side of the western terminus of the
road, and considerably damaged.—
The engineer, Mr. Hackney, was
seriously injured. The fireman sus
tained injuries also. The tender of
the engine was brought to the city
yesterday, and the engine was
brought in this evening. It will be
several days before it will be ready
for service.
Prof. Gregory is giving a series

Augusta News.
Are you ready for Christmas find
the bad weather which always ac
companies the holidays?
The News addressed this ques
tion to Mr. Win, Mulherin before lie
glanced at his holiday stock, or it
would never have been uttered.
“Look around and see for your
self.” replied the great shoe dealer,
“And if you do not think we have
enough at our uptown stores, Mr.
Rice then will escort you down to
our store opposite the monument,
Yes, sir, we have the best selected
and most varied stock of shoes we
have ever offered, and we are ready
to put the town through the bad
weather dry shod.”
“How is business?”
“I have noticed.” said Mr. Mul
herin, “that some merchants have
complained of small sales and dull
business, but our November busi
ness has been the largest on record.
Mr. Gouley makes the same report
at the lower store, and we uje busy
all the time.”
“How about this full stock nowon
hand ?”
“This is a new stock just coming
in. Our sales were so unusually
large that we had to order out a
special stock for the holidays, and
there is nothing prettier or more
acceptable than a handsome pair of
shoes for Christmas. A present of
that kind is always in order and
does the state and her citizens some
service. People are coming In
from the country, too, at this sea
son, and we have a special and
large line of boots and shoes for the
country trade, and business is brisk:
in our wholesale and retail depart
ments. You can refer the ladies,
gentlemen and the planters alike
to our two stores, and to the new
card in to-day’s paper, and tell them
we are ready for Christmas and any
kind of weather.”
