Karoline Bauer tells this story of
the Princess Natalie Kurakin: She
was an imposing and captivating
beauty, with the temper of a fiend,
and becf me the most admired and : j .
feared woman at the court of the >V tlVUOSbOlO
Emperor Alexander. Her husband
idolized her, and unfortunately al- 1
lowed her complete dominion over
himself. To indulge her love for !
pleasure and luxury, he went be
yond his means, and then sold one
estate after another. Once when
he handed her a little pack of bank
notes which he had won, as a sort
of peace offering, Natalie seized
them and threw them into the fire,
to cure the general, she said, of club
and gaming and late hours. An
other night when she was adornetl
in full splendor for a court ball, the
general kept her waiting. At last
lie came,greatly excited,flushed and
with flashing eyes. She supposed
the excitement was caused by wine,
and told him so in vehement words.
“No, dear darling, I had the most
important business to attend to
concerning yourself and our Alex
andra. Look at these ruble notes—
you will not throw them into the
lire?”
“I will, though,” she exclaimed.—
And as she spoke she snatched the
notes from his hand and threw
them into the flames. He shriek
ed and rushed forward to save
them—too late! There was seen a
bright blaze, and—
“Natalie,” he said in a hollow
voice, “you havs just destroyed our
entire fortune—300,000. I hope it I
never return from Caucasus, thaj
you may never have a bitter re
pentance. To-day I received orders
from the emperor’s own lips to join
the army in Caucasus to-morrow.—
In order to secure yours and our
child’s future, I to-day sold our last
estate to the crown, and everything
now is ashes, ashes!”
General Kurakin was killed in
one of the first engagements in the
Caucasus, and Natalie became tlie
most heartless of widows.

Nothing Equal to It.—We have been

time with good results, and think there Is

Seventy Years Crazy.
Brooklyn Special.
Miss Elizabeth Pierson, 8o years
old, the oldest patient in Blooin-
ingdale asylum, died on Tuesday,
and was buried yesterday in St.
Michael’s cemetery on Long Island.
The records of the asylum show that
Miss Pierson was admitted on Sep
tember!, 1843, a Mr. Deane, a trus
tee of the Bowery Savings Bank,
being named as her friend. For a
number of years he paid the cost of
her maintainance in the asylum.—
Six or seven years ago the gover
nors missed Mr. Deane, and upon
inquiry found that he was dead.—
He had resigned his trusteeship of
the bank ten years before.
They were unable to find out the
relation that existed between Mr.
Deane and Miss Pierson, and de
cided to maintain her at their own
cost. Merrit Trimble, one of the
oldest of the governors, speaking of
Miss Pierson at the last meeting of
the board of governors, recalled a
talk he had with her at the first
meeting lie attended over forty
years ago. She was then bright
and chatty, and with nil a cultivat
ed lady. She then had melancholia,
which became secondary dementia
a few years after her admission.
The superintendent, Dr. Nichols,
who has been identified with Bloom-
ingdale asylum at intervals tor
forty years, said last night that
while Miss Pierson was the oldest
patient in point of years, the asy
lum had, he thought, a dozen pa
tients who had been there fifty
years.

Gile’s dirt road circus was attached

John Ammons to satisfy claims
amounting to .$10,000, sent for col
lection from various portions of the
state. The property consists of ton
horses, wagons of all kinds, a
couple of elephants, and a la rue
menagerie. The circus was giving
a performance and the elephant
was doing the grand mareli, when
Sheriff Ammons walked into the
ring and took charge of the entire
outfit. Sheriff Ammons, although
he has been Sheriff twenty years,

AND THE POWER THEREOF,
D IRECTED by a long experience In the Dry Goods Trade, has enabled me to outstrip all
former elt'orts In buying my Fall and Winter Stoek of Dry Goods, and I ask the pur
chasing public of Waynesboro and surrounding country to examine my Stock anil prices
before purchasing elsewhere, for I think Unit in so doing they will consult their own Inter- I
est. Having just returned from New York where the market was flooded with goods, and |
all trying to get the mighty dollar, and having that article with me, it enabled me to get a
larger discount, and that discount I projioso to give to my customers. These facts are
worthy the consideration of all persons buying dry goods. It Is useless to try to enumerate
