A Costly Ilt'fufttil.
Baltimore, Dec. 23.—The case
of John W. llice vs. the Philadel
phia, Wilmington and Baltimore
ltailroad Company, which has been
on trial in the Circuit Court of Tow-
son for several days, was concluded
to-day by a verdict in favor of the
plaintiff for $2,700. The case is im
portant to traveling salesmen. The
suit was to recover damages for the
ejection of the plaintitl from one of
the defendant’s cars on Jan. Ill, 18811.
Itice was a traveling salesman for
\V. P. Whiting & Co., of this city,
and on Jan. 110, 1888, he bought a
coupon ticket in Wilmington, Del.,
to Philadelphia and return. On ins
way from Wilmington to Philadel
phia the conductor punched the re
turn coupon instead of the proper
one, and then wrote on the back of
the punched coupon, “punched by
mistake.” On the return trip, which
was on Jan. Ill, the conductor in
charge of the train would not re
cognize the damaged ticket, and
put the plaintiff off the train at Ole-
olden station, six miles out of Phila
delphia. Suit was docketed for
damages. This is the third trial of
the case, the plaintiff having gotten
verdict each time, the former
amount being $5,000. It has twice
been to the Court of Appeals.

The largest single stone ever
shipped by any railroad in this
country is being loaded on a car at
the Erie railroad in Jersey City.—
The stone is for a monument in
Buffalo, is fourteen feet in diameter,
weighs fifteen tons and cost $5,000.
The car was prepared especially for
the stone, two of the center sills
were cut off and braced, and this
stone swung down through the
floor. The height of the stone
when loaded will be fifteen from
the track.

A negro who lives just across the
Etewah river, below Cartersville,
was crossing the Western & Atlantic
railroad bridge over the river about
dark Tuesday, when the south
bound train came thundering upon
liim. He had to meet death from
the iron monster rushing upon the
track, or jump into the icy river, 90
feet below. He jumped, and by a
miracle escaped unhurt by the fear
ful plunge. The train stopped,
picked him up and carried him to
his home, a short distance down the
track.
