both the proposed railroad routes
from Atlanta to the sea. The At

along both routes to give the engin

How is brother Callaway?
Mrs. Chew is on a visit to Mr
S. Jones.
Dr. Belt is on the wing again for
your city. Who in the place is ill ?
Two more of your Waynesboro
beaux were down on last Sun
day. It must mean something.
Mr. James V. Jones killed a fine
wild turkey Thursday. Jim is a
mighty hunter, but lights shy ot the
girls.
Miss Mallie Burton is home again |
from Florida. We hear she thinks
of making Augusta her home, hut
Burke can’t spare Miss Bailie.
We understand that a notable
housewife here, has berated “Rex”
for speaking of her dining. We are
glad of it. Wo would like to write,
“peace to his ashes.”
Mr. Robert Jones, our enterpris
ing young merchant,has been twice
to Savannah during this month.
He understands the principle of
business, with the motto “A nimble
sixpence.”
Mr. P. S. Jones has caught some
of the finest fish in the Ogeechee
this season. Last Saturday night
lie had a notable fish fry and four
shad were taken in one net, large
and line enough to rejoice the heart
of any man.
Mr. Harry Beeman, of Worcester,
Mass., lias been visiting Mr. George
Jones. Had been down to his
orange plantation in Florida. The
right young man to come South.
Plenty of money and no poor kin.
Doing away, with his pleasant gen

Messrs. Calhoun & Wilson have
inaugurated a new campaign. They
haye taken the town by a liberal
supply of pretty little flags and have
a number of hoys displaying them
all over the city. They have just
opened one of the largest and best
assortment of hats in the city, and
should advertise in The Citizen to
let the people of Rurke know what
place to go for their head gear.
The prospects for a strike among
the factory operatives is good. The
men declare that they will not be
governed by what their employers
say unless sanctioned by the execu
tive committee. The presidents on
the other hand, say they will treat
with their employees, but not with
the Knights of Labor. The opera
tives have forwarded to their execu
tive committee the action of tlie
mill presidents, and it only awaits
the action of that committee to de
termine whether it would lie better
for the men to strike or to continue
work. Strikes have as a general
tiling resulted in anything but good
for those going into them. It is
true that strikes often causes seri
ous loss to the mill owners or em
ployers, but not always. The mills
could have shut down and saved
money, if their official reports be
true, for they have declared that
the mills were being run at a loss,
yet to keep their employees at
work, and enable them to live,
which the operatives do not deny,
it looks strange, that now, as soon
as the mills have begun to realize a
small margin of protits on their in
vested capital, the very men who
have thus been cared for should or
ganize for the puruose of inflicting
loss on their benefactors. It may,
however, result In the benefit of the
owners of the stock, and it will
most assuredly do so if they can
only manipulate the stock as Mr.
Jay Gould lias done, during the
great strike on his railway system
in the west and south-west. While
the strike is going on, his stock Is
gradually, to outsiders going down,
