gW The prospect of having the
lowest order of society set above
the intelligent and best citizens of
the South was extremely gratifying
to the money kings of the North.
Curses are coming home to roost at
the North. From recent speeches
anarchy in New York is about to
reign. To save a pun, affairs con
cerning the labor question are giv
ing 11 err Most as much as she
wants in the line of setting the
“bottom rail on top.”

Wo will call attention specially to
tho Democratic Executive Commit
tee’s announcement, through tlie
chairman, It. Ridgely, Esq., that on
tlio 11 th of May (here will be a inass
meeting of the party for Burke
county. It should he a full meeting.
One expressive of tho interest the
county has in her political affairs.
Everybody haying a vote should
remember that it is a grand privi
lege to wield it, and every citizen
ought to exercise this privilege
wisely, for the good of the com
munity and perfectly untrammeled.
Our county has a candidate in the
Held for governor honorable to her
in the person of Col. J. J. Jones,
and to allow anything like luke
warmness wh&n the honor of the
county is at hand would be a lust
ing reflection on her people. Then
spare a day from the farm and
other business and he on hand on
the 11th proximo.
THE I,Alton QUESTION,
The slaves of the long so-called
free states of the union are in open
rebellion against their ungodly and
grasping task masters. What will
l>e the final outcome of the present
strikes at the North and along tlio
Gould system of railroads in the
South West, instituted by Gould’s
Imported slaves—not Southerners
at all—is very hard to tell. Revo
lutions do not go backward. The
rights of tiie laboring class at the
North have been ignored and
trampled on about as long as human
nature—that is, Anglo-Saxon human
nature—can endure, and the mut
tering thunder of revolution is
heard in the defiant strikes against
the infernal and Inhuman task
masters. It will be a pitiful war of
suffering and endurance on the
part of the poor laborer, but if lie
can hold out, the grasping unfeeling
monopolist will have to yield some
day, and alas! for him when he
does fall. In a country like ours
power drifts into the hands of those
who acquire the millions they are
allowed to grasp and hold and wield
against the-interest of those money
controls. What a vast power It is
we do not as a people comprehend
until, like tho poor laborer, wo are
brought to feel and know its bane
ful presence upon the government.
At some day in tho future, to save
our institutions, this liberty of ac
cumulating such vast amounts of
money and property will ho oblig 'd
to l>e restricted, or the evil conse
quences of allowing its dangerous
power will certainly overwhelm us.
Is such men as Jay Gould to have
the liberty to dictate over the
established forms of government by
the corrupting power of vast wealth ?
lie is a fair sample of the genus.
What a contemptible, narrow aris
tocracy money is beginning to make
in tho North. No more wretched
spectacle of selfish meanness is
seen anywhere on tho face of the
earth, not even excepting the privi
leged class in England, whose
whole life is spent In grinding tho
helpless poor of that great empire.
There is no improvement in gov
ernment if tills thing cannot be
remedied by law, and our boasted

The oat crop is a total failure in
this section, and it is inferred that
the misfortune is general, as tlio
failure is due to the lateness of
spring and subsequent drought.
At this writing, however, a good
rain lias fallen, that may to some
extent mitigate the disaster that
the farming community has
sustained. P. S. P.
