WAYNESBORO, OA„ MAY II. 188(1.
IlKJIOnUTlt’ EXHCl'TIVH COMM1TTKK.
AtJjANTa, G a., April 20th, 1880.—
The State Democratic Executive
('ommittee will meet in parlor No.
104, Kimball House, Atlanta, (hi.,
on May 20th, 1880, at 10 a. m. Ev
ery member of the committee is
earnestly requested to be present.
J. IT. Polhill, Chairman.
John S. Candler, Secretary.
Hurrah! for Gordon is the
strongest argument his friends
urge in his behalf.
i*r No man can fling any mud
at Governor McDaniel, for he has
left no bad places behind him.
In General Gordon’s judf/ment,
Uncle Joseph has an easy time.
He simply votes. Only that, and
nothing more.
vr Atlanta has both senators.
She wants the next governor. She
wants all the state conventions.
Hut what is it that Atlanta does
not want?
We should think the Demo
cratic executive committee of a
great state could manage affairs
without being dictated to by aspir
ing candidates.
t*r If we'wanted a good gene
ral we would select Gordon. If we
wanted a good, painstaking, busi
ness governor we would vote for
Jones or Bacon.
gw While we agreed with Pro
fessor White in his views on negro
labor in the South, we should like
to hear from him on the recent la
bor troubles in the North and West.
gTtF~ The present state house of
ficials have been faithful and hon
est servants. Let the will of the
people so manifest itself that they
will remain in office without oppo
sition.
amr In all the states in the
Union tin 1 custom of alternating be
tween the different cities in holding
conventions seems to prevail. We
see no reason why Georgia should
be made an exception.
§ftF" Augusta has no candidate
in the field. She is eligably located.
For years all the conventions have
been held in Atlanta. The state ex
ecutive committee should give Au
gusta the next convention.

In this issue we publish the pro-i
I eeedings of the mass meeting held
in this place on last Tuesday. It
was a large and enthusiastic as
semblage of the best men of Our
county. The resolutions speak for
themselves. They are clear and
unmistakable in their declarations.!
They tell the truth.
The compliment paid Cover- i
nor McDaniel was merited and
deserved. Take his administra
tion from begininng to end and
we believe it is the best that has
ever been given to our grand old
state. His appointments have been
good; all the details of his office
have been industriously and faith
fully carried out to the best interest
of the state; his management of the
convict lease system cannot be im
proved on; and his financial policy
has been success itself. He will re
tire from office leaving a record
worthy of immitation by his success
ors in all time to come. The state
and country can ill afford to lose the
services of so able and efficient an
officer.
The nomination of Colonel Jones,
and the express determination to
support him to the last was una
nimity itself. Ho strong was the
feeling in his behalf that the dele
gates were requested not to express
or entertain a preference for a
second choice. The Democracy in
this county since the surrender have
been considerably in the minority.
The temptation to get office by lean
ing too much to the majority side
has been so great that at times our
party, has been sadly divided. In
all of these splits Colonel Jones has
been as true as truth itself to the
time honored principles of genuine
Democracy. Though time and time
again offered office and position he
has declined—giving the simple
reason that he could be of more ser
vice in the ranks than as a candi
date. When dissentions seemed su
preme and defeat inevitable, he has
gathered together the shattered
ranks and lead them ou to victory.
Now when the party in the county
is so cordially united; when no foe
threatens tit anywhere in the state,
the Democracy of Burke feel that
they have a right to ask the party
all over the state to aid them in re
warding the man who has been so
consistent in his course,so unselfish
in his action and conduct, and who
has done the county and district
such valuable service and who in
ttie darkest hour inspired hope
when hope seemed gone.
tire week, and received royal en
tertainment. Ex-l’reBident Jeffer
son Davis and his youngest (laugh-j
tor, a beautiful and accomplished j
young lady, were the*lioni>red guests ,
of the occasion. Their stay from j
beginning to ending was one grand j
ovation. The deference, the horn-j
age, the spontaneous outburst of
love and veneration, has never been
equalled in the country. The pent
up love and affections of twenty
years burst forth, and he was, as it
were, inundated with every mark of
the most touching attentions and
devoted admiration. His presence
was everywhere greeted with cheers
and hurrahs. Every man, woman,
and child appeared anxious to shake
his hand, and say a word or so to
him expressive of their unbounded
love and veneration. Children by
the thousands flocked about him
offering all sorts of floral demon
strations. Parents besieged his
lodgings and followed him wliere-
ever he went, anxious to get a kiss
ora kind word or blessing for their
children. These demonstrations
were most gratefully received and
acknowledged, and did much to
wards recompensing and rewarding
him for the trials and tribulations
and great sufferings of his life. The
whole South will feel kindly to
wards Savannah for its successful
efforts in getting up this demonstra
tion for the exhibition of the grati
tude and love of an appreciative
people.

ur If the claims and merits of
Bacon and Gordon alone had been
considered in our mass meeting on
last Tuesday, Bacon delegates would
have been elected by three votes to
one. As such was the case in that
meeting, so is it true of this entire
county.
Within the next two years
the present lease of the state road
must be settled. Then the road
must be either leased again or sold.
For this reason no man should be
elected governor who can be influ
enced by Governor Brown. On this
line we would take either Jones or
Bacon in preference to Gordon.

gjF The Hon. C. R. Pringle, the
president of the temperance party
of the state, has issued a proclama
tion suspending all prohibition
movements and elections until after
the state election in October. What
effect will this have on the move
ment in this county to bring on a
vote on that question in Juno next?
It looks like postpomnent.
The excitement produced
by the gubernatorial contest should
not cause the friends ot progress in
this county to forget the no fence
or stock movement which has been
recently agitated. True, who shall
be the next governor—whether it
shall be Jones, Bacon, or Gordon—
may bo very interesting to these
gentlemen and their immediate
friends, but tho no fence or stock
law is a matter of vast more impor
tance to the material interest of
Burke county.

The Democracy of Burke have
just put In nomination for the office
of governor her most distinguished
son, Hon. John J. Jones. In the
performance of this act they believe
that they only in part pay a debt of
gratitude for the party of the entire
state for the marked services which
this gentleman has rendered the
cause for a number of years. They
feel too that they offer to the state
a man fitted by nature, education,
habits, and experience for this the
highest state office in the gift of the
people. Mr. Jones is a lawyer of
marked ability, a man of the purest
and highest character, public spirit
ed and liberal even to a fault. Time
and time again preceding the war
he was sent from this county to the
state legislature, and at the time of
the secession he was a member of
Congress, representing the old dis
trict of the Hon. A. II. Stephens,
rn fact he succeeded that distin
guished gentleman when he retired
from the halls of Congress, In every
capacity in which ho has been tried
lie has acquitted himself with mark
ed ability, and to the entire satisfac
tion of bis constituency. He posses
ses all of tho elements essential to
a good executive officer, He is firm
in the discharge of duty, well In
formed In all matters connected
with the interest of tho state, a good
financier, discriminating m jndg.
ment, cautious and prudent in ac»
tion, and honest and reliable even
to a fault. While he is not the can
didate of any section but of the
whole state, the 1 )emocracy of Blirke
tool that in as much as this section
of the state has not in years been
given any of the high offices, that
tho party in this part of the state
should unite with them in pressing
earnestly before the state conven
tion the just claims of her worthy
candidate,
To the I’ulillc.
I hereby certify that there hat
never existed a co-partnership be
tween myself and J. 1). Sanders in
tho city of Waynesboro or elsewhere,
that no such partnership now exists
between us, and that Mr. Sanders is
in no way responsible for tho rent
of the shop on Myrick street, which
l rented from Judge IT, H. Perry,
that I allowed him to occupy a part
of said shop free of rent, and that I
alone am responsible to Judge Perry
for all rents due him for rent of
same. I make this statement in jus
tice to Mr. Sanders who lias been
sued jointly with me for the rent of
said shop, in order that the public
may understand tho matter, and to
the end that Mr. Sanders’ credit
may not be injured by any false im

mind of the people by having his
name used In said suit.
