IIKKTIMI OF TIIK IIKHOI'KATIC l’ARTY OK
OK III]UKK COUXTY.
There will be iv meeting of the
Democratic party held in Waynes
boro, on the (ith (lay of July, next,
to select delegates to the congres
sional convention to assemble in
Augusta on July loth, to nominate
a candidate for the 10th congres
sional district. l>y order of the
committee.
Randolph Riduely, Chairman.
P. P. Johnston, Secretary.
iwr br. Sunderland received a
wedding fed from Cleveland for per
forming bis marriage ceremony.
It was a new i00 bill which had
never been in circulation. Dr.
Sunderland has given it to his wife,
and it will be kept as an heir-loom
in the family.
TIVO PARTIES.
There should be two political
parties in every county and state.
Where there is but one party, there
will always be found what is termed
“rings.” And in every cam
paign, there being no party issues,
the candidates fight each other on
personal issues—and hence the
words “mud slinging” are becoming
very common. A party can only
be kept within the bounds of decen
cy (none of them are ever pure), by
having an opposition or rival ele
ment to contend against. The one
must watch the other—and eacli
must be made to understand and
fully realize that its very life de
pends upon its comparative purity
and freedom from unwholesome
combinations. It is unfortunate for
the South that it virtually has but
one party; for one party means
riiit/s, bosses, clique*. As long as
this lasts, there will bo personal is
sues, and, as a consequence, dis
graceful “mud slinging”—national
issues will dwindle into neighbor
hood brawls—the discussion of state
policy will give place to disgraceful
wrangles—men of character, of hon^
or, of laudable aspirations wilf
stand aloof, and the government
will be run by machine politicians,
and the sea of politics will be kept
muddy, its turbid waters wreaking
with tilth and the most offensive
scum. The people are to blame for
the wrong doing of the public ser
vants. The office does not always
dignify and ennoble the Incumbent:
the brighest object can be smeared
with mud. If the people are all
right and will do their duty their
public officials will not go far
wrong. When legislators are
bribed, it is because the party who
makes them are corrupt. When
judges go astray and soil their ju-
ducial ermines, it is because the
people have wandered off and juries
are derelict in their duties. A
governor can do no great wrong
unless backed by a corrupt legisla
ture and a venal judiciary. A legis
lature and a judiciary are the im
mediate offspring of the people, the
party in power—and a governor is
but the executive officer, the crea
ture of the legislature. Our gulm-
natorial campaign has been made
up largely with personal animosi
ties that will never heal over; with
wranglings whose echoes will vi
brate for many a day over the en
tire state; partisan feelings and un
wholesome prejudices have been
engendered ami blinded the eyes of
both sides, and the campaign has
never yet touched that high water
mark of manly debate which would
appeal to the enlightened judgment
of a thinking people. The pure
party methods of the fathers have
been ignored, and the wranglings ot
the ward politician have come in
vogue. Don’t blame our candidates
for all tliis. They are but the cooks
that prepared the meal, we furnish
ed the ingredients and sit at the
table and enjoy the repast. If
slanderous remarks are made, if
vile billingsgate is indulged in, the
press is the circulating medium and
the people by the ready manner in
which they drink it all in, say by
their acts, “Well done, good and
faithful servant.” It Is time to cry
halt. If disgraceful charges are
made, don’t listen to them,'much
less repeat them. The ballot box is
tho place to correct slanders, to
condemn wrong, to encourage vir
tue. If the people will speak out in
no uncertain voice, the muddy
stream of politics will cast off its
scum—tho dregs will all go back to
tho bottom. See that the springs
are pure, and wo need foar no ap
prehensions of unwholesome wa
ters.
Smithsonian Institute has examin
ed these remains, and his renort
will, doubtless, be very interesting
and instructive. These remains, of
course, show that this country was
inhabited by another race of people
before the Indians made their ad
vent. What brought about the de
struction and the final exite of this
race, will always be wrapped in
mystery, and left to scientific con
jecture. “There were giants in
those days”—in the physical, if not
in the intellectual man. This world
in which we live is full of wonders.
It teems with mysteries, which
neither science, history or tradition
can solve. “Who by searching can
find out the Almighty to perfec
tion ? Deep as hell, how canst thou
fathom it, high as heaven how
canst thou reach it?” The fish teeth
and bones which (in boring artesian
wells) have been found buried se
veral hundred feet deep, show that
all this section of tho ( state must
either have been covered with wa
ter in the antediluvian days, or in
the settlings of the flood a deposit
of several hundred feet was made.
If conjecture is right—and the
bones in upper Georgia belong to
an extinct race of giants, tho ques
tion presents itself, did these giants
spring from Adam, and if^so, why
is the raco extinct. This is an in
teresting field of study. Perhaps
Dr. Woodrow’s scientific researches
may throw some light on the sub
ject, if he is not ldnderod from mak
ing them, fearing that his church
will “sit down” on his efforts.
