Valdosta, Ga., Nov. 8.— A most
horrible and brutal double murder
has just come to light from Clinch
county. The victims were an old
man 78 years of age, and his aged
wife. The murderers are negroes,

hours later. Mr. Hughes and wife
lived seven miles south of Dupont
by themselves. They were good

grandsons, Thadeus Hughes, and
Jimmie Rice, young lads, went to
spend the night with the old peo
ple, and when they enter the yard
they found their grandfather lay
ing near the steps dead.
They immediately lied and car
ried the news to the nearest neigh
bors. A crowd soon gathered, and
when they 7 returned to the old peo
ple’s residence they 7 found the old

Patrick Casey, the engineer, spent
eleven days in making the trip
from Trinidad to Texline, and re
turn. For two days and nights he
was without food. One meal he
made on a jack rabbit caught in the
snow.
Seventy-five men shoveling snow
at Mt. Dora were cut off from food
for two days and nights. They 7 got
some sheep out of a snow drift
and roasted and ate them. A de
layed passenger train was cut off
from eating stations three days,
they drew on the express cars

Last Sunday morning a sad and
fatal accident occurred at Mr. Jas.
M. Newton’s place in this county.
Mr. Lester Zeigler, the eighteen
year old son of Mr. Israel Zeigler,
had a pistol in his hand, and being
asked by a comrade if it was load
ed, replied that it was not, and to
assure his lriend that it was not,
placed it to his head and pulled the
trigger, when, to the horror of the
young man, it fired, the ball passing
through his head. He lingered un
til some time in the night, when
death resulted.

ing, and the defendant discharged

About 100 negroes met in Atlanta
on November 12th jn response to a
call' for a convention. Matters of
