The Republican victory in Oregon

Democrats. Perhaps one from
Maine might also.
William Jennings Bryan ano
AdlalE. Stevenson were nominated
by acclamation at Kansas City as
the Democratic standard bearers.
It was difficult for the Republi

find among their statesmen one

eighty thousand dollars. He hao

Our census returns will be tabu
lated by machinery,which of courst
is hard to believe. One may not bt
surprised, however, who has look

machine, which machine seems U

The O. M. Carter case still seems
t.o threaten' the courts. His rich
uncle is employing the greatest
lawyers in New York City to worr}
justice out of the custody or tht
greatest rascal the United States
ever caught robbing.
Nero made his horse senator. A
lot of Republicans are going to tr}
to make a little popinjay’s hat vice-

the Philadelphia convention for tbt

Tom C. Piatt, the Republican boss
has done “the state some service;”

Judge Cnadler says those who do

be indicted.He is.right.There woulo
be no liquor selling if there was no

of savagery which is only anolhei

the white man would some day
have an appreciation of what i-
most beautiful and useful in nature.
Can’t vve enlist other ladies to take

How proud we should be if old

THE NEGRO NORTH ANO SOUTH.

Of the Republican platform the
New Y T ork Tribune says it is “wel
built.” The New York Journal
says “there is nothing, in it.” The
St. Louis Globe-Democrat speaks ol
as “strong, direct, unequivecal,”anci
the Atlanta Constitution remarks
that it is a “disappointing and un
satisfactory declaration.” These are
pros and cons of Republican and
Democratic journals.
Winfield Scott Schley will rank
in American history as one of Ut
most sensible heroes. His actions
ever since the unpleasant contro
versy which developed out of the
battle of Santiago de Cuba, have
been indicative of this invaluable
trait; but his recent declaration
that he would under no circumstau
ces accept political nomination ol
any character, has furnished a con
vincing and gratifying culmina
tion.—Atlanta Constitution.
