The Survival, of the Fittest.
WAYNESBORO, GA„ OCTOBER. 13, 1900
Our table is visited by the Atlan
ta News, a candidate for popular fa
vor. Each issue shows that it is a
formidable rival of the state’s dair
ies,and is one of the strongest Dem
ocratic papers we have seen,
appearance of it Is distinctly
ropolitan and when one opens i 1
the impression is, it is up-to-date
We predict that tbe Neivs will tala
with the people from the jump, a-
the expression goes.
The Atlanta election for mayor
and aldermen was spirited to the
last. No blood was spilled but there
was plenty of it on the moon. Col
Livingston Mims passed under the
string by a length, Rice a good sec
ond.There were four candidates and
now that the race is over all seem
to be satisfied except the beaten
fellows and their friends They will
occupy some time explaining how
fondant eivii or criminal; in either
case he is one of the basest scoun
clrels in a community. And why?
Because ho corrupts the very foun
tain head of justice and leaves so
ciety at the mercy of viliains of ev
ery class. He is the factor that de
files the government and starts it
into decay. He is without moral
status and hopelessly corrupt, i!
such men can not be eliminated from
the jury box and all affiliation with
The the machinery of our courts, the dis
met ' ease of decay is already fastened on
the government.
An honorable citizen who pride?
himself on his qualification as a
juror—a just and noble pride it is—
ought to resent every approach of
the insidious “fixer” to tarnir-h hi?
honor. He ought to go to his grand
jurors and complain for the sake of
the society he lives io; for the sake
of the younger generations who art
to make up posterity and have the
vile wretch punished and held up
to scorn. Indict him for the insult
he has offered you, and for the
wrong the wretch has done to your
people.
they got beat and figuring up the
funds that went out on the liquid ail j Correspondence Citizen,
like thistle down never to return. Oct. 8.—Rain is very plentiful in
our section of the country now.
It would not be exactly fair t< j Mrs. L J. Kilpatrick and bright
charge responsibility on McKinlej little son, Avret, of MunDerlyn, are
for the robbery his thieves have ac i spending some time with her par-
complished since he appointed them ents at this place.
The Confederate Veterans Reunion, Geor-
gia Division. Augusta. Ga. j
The second annual re-unnion of,
the Georgia Confederate Veterans \
will be held at Augusta, Ga., No-j
vember 14, 15, 16, 1900.
It is now just five weeks before j
the reunion of the old Confederate
veterans of Georgia and South Car
olina. This reunion ^ould be a
memorable occasion from the fact
that many of the old comrades are
growing ripe in oid age and it may
be the last time they will have an
, opportunity of seeing those whom
Suits, Boys ! they stood shoulder to shoulder with
during the trying days of the 60’o.
Another fact worthy of mention
is that they will have the opportun
ity of meeting the comrades of old
South Carolina, the state in which
secession was born, and no doubt
there are many South Carolinians
who now reside in Georgia, and
many Georgians who reside in
South Carolina, ail of whom will
have an opportunity of meeting and
mingling with each other cn the
banks of the Savannah river, at Au
gusta. duriDg this years reunion.
Another fact that should lend en
chantment to this occasion is, that
the people of Augusta are noted far
and wide for their unbounded hos
pitality to their guests. And they
intend bendiDg every effort to malo
this a long to be remembered occa
sion for those whom we love, be
cause it may be many years before
many of us will have the pleasure
of doing (heir part in making life
pleasant for our oid comrades.
The railroads of Georgia and
South Carolina are determined to do
their parts manfully and see to il
that a very low rate is given to al!
sections of the two states that every
body may bo. present on this festive
occasion.
The different committees intend
using every effort for the comfort
and pleasure of all who will be heri
on the 14th, loth, 16th of Novem
ber.
The chairman of the following
committees will be glad to answer
any queries that may be made by
those who wish information con
cerning the different departments.

public outrage. Nearly three years

THE DISEASE.
There is doubtless a disease in the
body politic when juries refuse eith
er from want of courage or direct
corruption to do the duty society
requires for its protection. If the
poor and the weak in this country
have any protectors against the in
fluc-ntial, the rich and the strong it
is in the courts and the juries, A
corrupt court i3 the meanest tyrant
on earth: next if not equal to it is a
cowardly or corrupt jury. It is . an
exception to the rule when a court
is openly corrupt, but it is not so
rare under our system of electing
judges to observe a judge looking
to his re-election and hunting pop
ular favor; even leaning at times to
one side or another in factions to
obtain popularity. It naturally
grows out of the system; is difficult
to correct, but none the less danger
ous to the liberty and common,
rights of the people.
The jury at last is that branch ol
the judicial functions of govern- ;
ment which is nearest to the people :
aDd that upon which society ecus' j
lean for safety and proteciion. Your
neighbor is your juror. He is select
ed too, only when he is upright and J
intelligent. The fool, the thief aud
the corrupt villain is never suppos
ed to be in the jury box He is for
ever supposed to be out of the grand
jury room. He could not be toler
ated for a moment in the traverse
jury box, where the greatest de
mands of society and the individu
al are finally submitted It is a
grand thing to be a juror and tHe
really most responsible place a cit
izen can have in his government.
What is a legislature, the execu
tive, or even the judicial system
without pure and intelligent juries?
Absolutely nonenties io our gov
ernment. vVe can see at a glance
how essential the jury system is to
a perfect government; how honor
able it is to sustain it in perfect pur
ity, and how dangerous it is to so
ciety when it allows corruption to
filter into it.
Every juror who goes into tbe
j'ury box afraid to do his duty is
one of the vilest of cowards. Every
one who goes there with the fixed
purpose of doing favors to the state
out of prejudices against a defend
ant, or any juror who takes the sol
emn oath of a juror and goes into
the jury box “faxed” to favor a de-

Rev. Bascom Anthony’s Brother Killed.
We gather from exchanges new.-
of the recent sad killing accidental
ly of Harry Anfhony, near Lake
Butler, Fla .brother of Rev. Bascom
Anthony, who was minister for the
Methodist church here several
years ago. The saddest part of the
terrible accident was that the kill
ing w’as done by a brother. He was
so grief stricken over the unfortunate
affair be attempted to take his own
life and die with him. The acci
dent happened to Harry Anthony
in the attempt to hand his younger
brother, Marvin Anthony a gun.
The gun w’as discharged by some
means, the load taking effect in the
neck and shoulder of Harry. It is
a sad affair and there is a general
sympathy for those stricken by it.

Blood.
We live by our blood, and on
it. We thrive or starve, as
our blood is rich or poor.
There is nothing else to live
on or by.
When strength is full and
spirits high, we are being re-
freshed, bone muscle and brain,
in body and mind, with con
tinual flow of rich blood.
This is health.
When weak, in low spirits,
no cheer, no spring, when rest
is not rest and sleep is not
sleep, we are starved ; our blood
is poor; there is little nutri
ment in it.
Back of the blood, is food,
to keep the blood rich. When
it fails, take Scott’s Emulsion
of Cod Liver Oil. It sets the
whole body going again—man"
woman and child.
If you have not tried it, send for free sample,
