statement of Mrs. Pearson prior
to her death at Gastonia, N. C., was
submitted. She charged Swink with
having caused her illness.
Swink has never denied the whipping,
aud the case is developing into oue of
unusual interest. The cause of the
whipping, which was indicted in Sep
tember, is said to have been the delivery
of a note by Mrs. Pearson to a lady
friend of hers from a young man. The
contents of that note have not yet been
revealed, but the young man who is
said to have written it has gone to parts
unknown.
The whipping of Mrs. Pearson was
administered with a stick, and she was
ordered to leave • Woodruff. Her hus
band was absent iip North Carolina, so
she immediately went to Gastonia,
where after a lingering illness of nearly
two months, she died.
MARRIED BY THE GOVERNOR.
South Carolina’s Executive Performs
a Double Ceremony,
Columbia, S. C., Nov. 6.—At Kings-
tree, Williamsburg county, there was a
double wedding with features of more
than usual interest. The ceremony was
by special invitation performed by the
governor, there being only a few in
stances of this kind in the history of
South Carolina. The brides were sis
ters, Jewesses, and the grooms were
Christians.
A special ceremony, prepared from
those of several denominations, was
used, and by accident- the wedding wa
rounded off with oue of the features of
the Jewish ceremony—the breaking of
a glass. After completing the ceremony
Governor McSweeney’s arm in some
way knocked a goblet off a table and it
fell in the midst of the wedding party.
The parties were Mr. William Solo
mon Lynch aud Miss Ether Benjamin
and Mr. Hoxie Glenburn Askius and
Miss Rose Lillian Benjamin.
ASSAULTED A WHITE WOMAN
Mob is Searching Kor Negro Who Is In
Charge of Sheriff.
Columbia, S. C., Nov. (i.—Near Gree-
leyviile, Williamsburg county, a negro,
Macon Lesense, went to Major Mitch-
um’s house, where Mrs. Mitchum was
nursing her baby. The negro entered
and Mrs, Mitchum ordered him out,
taking up a gun in oue hand while she
held the baby with the other, but the ne
gro took the gun away from her aud as
saulted her. She gave the alarm and
the negro was captured at the Mallard
Lumber company’s plant, where he was
at work, as usual. He confessed and
was taken to the county jail at Kings-
tree.
Acting on the governor’s orders, the
sheriff started with the negro for Co
lumbia, and it was reported that the
negro escaped, but later advices indicate
that this may he a ruse to throw lynch
ers off the track.

FATAL PRACTICAL JOKE.
Sludeut Thrown Into a Hole and Dies
of His Injuries,
Charleston, Nov. 5.—Finley Brown,
12 years old, died here under distressing
circumstances. The boy was a day pu
pil at the Porter Military academy. As
a pracical joke, some of his school fel
lows dropped him into the swimming
pool of the academy, from which the
water had been drained off, and left
him to get out as best he could.
During his struggles to regain his
liberty Finley injured himself inter
nally and died in great agony.
He refused to reveal the names of the
boys who placed him in the pool. He
declared they were acting merely in a
spirit of fun, aud that no blame should
he attaohed to them.

majority for Simmons over Carr of 32,-

terially add to Simmons’ vote, an<j his
majority will he from 40,000 to 60,000.
North Carolina Safe,
Raleigh, Nov. 3.—The Democratic
state committee’s secretary, P. M. Pear
sall, says “Bryan will carry North Car
olina by not less thau 30,000. We will
elect seven congressmen, with a decided
probability, and in fact, almost cer
tainty, of getting two more in the Eighth
and Ninth districts.”
Phosphate Works Closed Down.
Charleston, Nov. 6.—Inconsequence
of the deciine in price of phosphate rock
and difficulty in obtaining ocean trans
portation, two big mining companies
near Beaufort have closed down and
another is working only half its plant.
His Leg Ground Off.
Society Hili., S. C., Nov. 5.—George
