TAKEN TOWARD RIVER
Young Lady Lieft at Home Alone Dis
appeared During Her Sister’s Ab
sence—Posse Is Searching For the
Criminal—Cudahy Kidnaping.
Pueblo, Colo., Dec. 24.—Maggie Hoel
has been missing since about 3 o’clock
Saturday afternoon and it is feared that
she has been murdered.
The girl, who was about 18 years old.
lived with her sister, Mrs. Charles
Beafty, in a lonely spot about 37 miles
west of the city. Ou Saturday Mrs.
Beatty left Maggie in charge of her lit
tle child at her home. Upon her return
two hours later her sister was gone aud
the baby was alone in the house.
Indications about the premises led to
the immediate suspicion that the girl
had been taken from her home by force.
There were evidences of a struggle aud
in the yard were found the foot prints
of a man evidently of large size aud
weight. The foot prints led to the di
rection of the Arkansas river and at
some places along the trail appeared the
prints of smaller shoes such as Maggie
Hoel wore. At other places the trail in
dicated that the girl was dragged or car
ried along by her captors.
Near the river hank where the ground
is harder all traces were lost.
A large number of men have been
searching, but the girl has uot yet been
fouud. At Mrs. Beatty’s home Mag
gie’s hat aud the wrap which she ordi
narily wore out of doors were found un
disturbed.
In the immediate vicinity a large force
of men have beeu working on reservoirs
now under construction.
Among the tens of thousands wli •

during the past few years, to our
knowledge, not a single case has re

field & Co., 240 Wabash avenue,Cai-
cago, one of the most prominent re
tail druggist in that city, in speak
ing of this says: ‘‘We recommend
Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy for
ia grippe in many cases, as It not
only gives prompt and complete re
covery, but also counteracts any
tendency of Ia grippe to result ir

HAS IDENTIFIED PAT CROWE
He Is the 31an Who Made Inquiries
About Cudaby.
Omaha, Dec. 24.—A man whose uame
the police refuse to reveal has identified i
Pat Crowe as the light complexioned in
dividual who, in company with a wo
man, accosted him in the vicinity of the
robbers’ rendezvous relative to the own
ership of the house to which youug Ed
ward Cudahy was carried by kidnapers
last Thursday night. .
When shown a picture taken from the
rogue’s gallery of Crowe this man stated
positively that it was a perfect ‘likeness
of the man he saw at Thirty-sixth aud
Grover streets. Questioned closely as
to the man's conduct, his manner aud
general description, he gave a detailed
statement which convinces the authori
ties that they are ou the right track.
The mau states that while negotiating
for the renting of the house with the
mau supposed to be Crowe he made
sufficient note of his personal appear
ance as to be absolutely certain as to the
identifications.
Hoy Kidnaped.
Kalamazoo, Mich , Dec. 24.—Hobart
Clayberg, a 17-year-old boy, whose fa
ther, John B. Clayberg, is a prominent
citizen of Helena, Mon., was kidnaped
in this city last night by two men. The
boy was blindfolded and compelled to
walk to Mattewan, a distance of 11
miles. It became so stormy that the
kidnapers released youug Clay berg at
Mattewan, after robbing him of the
small sum of money he had in his pock
ets. The boy telegraphed here for help
and was brought home during thenight.
Woman Frightfully Burned.
Elberton, Ga., Dec. 26.—Mrs. M.
Smith was horribly burned, by falling

INTEREST IN CASES ARGUED
Great Deal of Speculation on the
Forthcoming Decision.
Washington, Dec. 25.—Deep interest
is manifested in the questions raised by
the cases which have been argued be
fore the supreme court during the past
week and those which will be argued
early in January.
Lawyers who have studied the briefs
closely say that there has beeu a mag
nificent presentation of both sides and
the questions put to counsel by .different
justices have been analyzed with a view
to forecasting, if possible, the views of
the questioners. The result has been
much interesting speculation, but noth
ing on which any definite conclusion as
to the probable result could be reached.
It has bean suggested that the court
might evade a decision upon the great
question of whether the constitution
follows the flag, and, if it does, how
rapidly, but the general belief is that
there will be no such evasion. Indeed,
those familiar with the points to be
raised in the January cases contend that
evasion is impossible.
