prices of cotton generally turned
planter, merchant and legitimate
business of every kiud wild, the
planter finally having the bag of
misery to shoulder. Why is it soot
intelligent people? It is born in
the seductive wish of everyone to
get rich quick. Was anything ever
more fatuous ?
It is best for the farmer not to
wait for organization in order to
j limit the amount of cotton acreage
in the South. Let every planter or
ganise himself, live for independ-
I ence in his own territory and he is
as sure to be a winner in the end
as anything human can be sure.

The echoes from the bugles of
Kipling’s fame are father and -‘fur

Representative Richardson’s lead
ership of the Democratic minority
in the house is not giving satisfac
tion and he may be displaced.
Archbishop Martinelli the su
preme head of the Catholic church
in America, was received in Atlan
ta with ceremonial greeting this
week.
Senator Tillman thinks it is too
early to begin shaping the Demo
cratic party in its present disorgan
ised condition anticipating the elec
tion of 1904.
Nothing so illustrates the undy
ing hatred of the Republicans of
the North for the South as the effort
made by a minority in the house t>
reduce southern representation in
congress. They wouid force negro
supremacy on ihe South and yet re
pudiate every semblance of it above
Mason and Dixon’s line. So far
having failed to place us under the
domination of ignorance it seeks
dismemberment of the South, us it
were, to place it always at the mer
cy of Northern and Western Repub
licans of the bloody shirt,Soutli bat
mg class. We do not think Presi
dent McKinley sympathises with
such malice.
JUST LISTEN A MINUTE.
Gen. Fifz Hugh Lee thinks that
it is Uncle Sam’s duty to continue
to watch over Cuba;!hat is to sorter
stand off and “shoo fl>” other na
tions away.
The British are so full of sorrow
over the condition of affairs in Soutl
Africa that there is no rejoicing ov
er the return of Lord Roberts t<
England,
The French-Vandbrbiit wedding
was simply advertised ad nauseam.
Some southern papers took it up
and added to ihf> dose as if it con
cerned the South in the least.
“Is it a reality that they are talk

the little boys plan it so they tall

reality; telescopes being discarded

The investigation of the Booz haz
ing at West Point Military acade
my has developed a mass of brutal
cowardice that surpasses under
standing. It illustrates most forci
bly ihe innate cruelty of human na
ture when power is in the hands of
cowards.
Mr Teller from his place in the
senate pronounced Gen. Eigan to
be ‘a miserable blackguard ” As
the United States army officer?
pride themselves on being peiLet
g^nti >men, this is a tremendous
blow to the loud mouthed ‘cusser”
of Gen. Miles.
The present aspect of the cotton
market ought to teach our farmer.-
that over production is a very dan
gerous affair with the South, and
that their greatest security is in liv
ing not outside of their own terri
tory. It is almost certain tint 12,-
000,000 bales mean ruin. We should
Qot forget that the growth of cotton
is increasing in other parts of the
world. Improvident over-produc
tion will always put cotton below
he cost of making it. High prices
of cotton either make Driees of ev
erything else high, or it has the
misfortune to meet high prices.
Necessarily it will cost more this
year to make a pound of cotton
than it has for the last five years,
and if there is qot an eye made sin
gle to watching expenses through
the next crop many a planter will
be back in ihe old route of bridging
over the future with mortgages and
various shap's of promises to pay.
No people ever suffered more bit-
lerly thau the South in its lerri
ble journey through the barren wil
derness of debt. But experience
had little effect and again and again
home made provisions were dis
carded in the vain effort to carry
out the the theory that cotton coulo
do everything. It has been demon
strated time and time again thai
’he theory was a delusion, but goon
And so at last th9 post office thief,
Neely must go back to Cuba, the
scene of his robberies, to be tried
for his crime. He will get about th
same amount of delay tint O M
Carter got, but may be justice will
be meted out to him after all the
force and point has been taken ou»
of it.
The country will be glad to know
that President McKinley is bette
and able to he ou* again. The leas
suspicion that his death might or
cur and leave that awful mlsfh
Roosevelt president is enough W
create a panic in stocks and a ger -
eral sorrow to all mankind.
We are for the possession of the

is more dangerous to the safety of a
republic than a large standing army
