WAYNESBORO, GA.. FEB. Hi, 1901
Edward VII is warming up his
seat quite nicely
Is Mrs, Nation’s visit to Chicago
a crusade against the unHoly land ?
Beautiful Cuba still lingers in the
lap of Uncle Sam. Oh! you naughty
old boy.
The Augusta Merry Makers are
going to give the visiting folks
there sometime in April a high old
time.
Ex-supreme Court Justice, Logan
E Bleakley, has gone back to the
University of Georgia to study
mathematics. He is a quaint and
picturesque figure in our state.
The liazers a.t the United Stales
Military Academy may have a hard
time in the future; that is if the of
fleers carry out the law. They are
at least ‘‘up against tlie problem.”
A congressman estimated the
cost of our soldier with the soldier
of the German and French armies
Each oue of our soldiers costs the
government .151,828, w'hile a German
soidier costs $227 and a French sol
dier $232,
“The Philadelphia anti-saloon la
dies, instead of appealing to the
hatcher, will try boycotting the
young men who patronize saloons.”
—A ugusta Chronicle.
Well, will the Waynesboro young
ladies boyco’t the youDg men who
patronize the jug train and the
blind tigers and afterward blow
their sweet breath in their faces?
Quarantining against small pox
ir. Savannah is rigidly enforced. A
vessel from the coast of South Car
olina was overhauled Thursday last
by a government tug and forced to
go into fourteen days quarantine
There was a case of small pox on
aboard. A great many places are
at present infected in South Caroli
na, Florida and Georgia.
Another of United States Cuban
postal thieves was detected robbing
the money order department in
Havanas about three weeks ago.
It was just about the time Neely
was to be sent there for trial. Sli Q ry-
dan is his name and he confessed
to stealing $1,300. What have the
Cubans done with him by ieave ot
this government. Wha* a lot of as
sorted carpet bag theive? Uncle
Sam must have iu stock.
I DEFERRED HONOR.
Tne administration will have the
I sin oi holding through malice and
favoritism from a faithful and
brave officer the honors and re
wards due him won at Santiago
bay. The farther the flight of time
; puts us from the naval battle with
Cervera the more distinct the facts
appear to fair minded mankind
that Admiral Schley was the true
hero of that great event. It is no
; disparagement to any officer actual-
• iy engaged to say so, nor does it
detract from the glory of any one
of them.
The wounds on Schley’s vessel,the
Brooklyn, shows that he not only
sought the post ot danger but that
he found it. Any one who intimates
that Schley did not show magnifi
cent courage is a fool iu the face of
the facts. The celebrated loup that
he made with his swift steamer is
now Known to be one of the finest
manoeuvres ever made at sea in
• the midst of an action on the spur
of llie moment. It placed the other
vessels free to pursue without
bioekiug the movements of any one
1 of them, but most important of all
it gave the Brooklyn the shortest
line to cut off and complete ihe de
■itruetion of the Spanish vessels
and the ODe on which Admiral Cer
vera was at the time.
In all probability the Colon wouid
j have escaped as it was a 20 knot
vessel and the Oregon only 16 knots
So sure was Cervera that the Brook
lyn was his only danger that he
concentrated bis fire on it, while
he steamed for life. Since the bat
tle the captured Spanish Admiral
a brave and splendid old fellow,
said that the shots received from
Schley’s vessel caused the destruc
tion of his ship.
In all this onset Sampson was ten
miles away and did not fire a shot.
Yet the admininistration is endeav-
iring to allow Sampson all the
glory and the honors, and the mean
est part of it is that Sampson is
willing to take them. There is an
other very peculiar feature about
Sampson’s meanness in the matter
He corraled Hobson and permitted
him to go through the South
speech making in his interest xo in
duce the people to think, he, Samp
son, was -‘the colossal genius” of the
Spanish war. The extravagance of
the figure of speech, in the absence
j of the facts, only induced our peo
ple to smile and think young Hob-
| son was making a gozling of him-
1 self.
In all this Schley has conducted
himself like a true hero and noble
patriot that he is. He has made
no complaint, has claimed nothing
for himself, while Sampson has de
livered himself of some of the most
contemptible spite against Schley
in which he has not been sustained
by the ipeople, while the adminis
tration witb-holds the place of hon
or that belongs to the true hero of
Santiago hay.

Northern histories intended for
the schools of Forsyth, Ga„ did
not suit the people thereon account
of applying the term ‘ rebel,” “re
bellion” and ‘-insurgents” to South
ern people and the Confederate
war. A meeting was held,speeches
made, and the histories put in a cof
fin, carried to a funeral pyre and
burned. That is about as good 8
disposition to make of them as any
and also a very forcible and em
phatic way of expressing public in
dignation. Why ihe3e History
writers North should persist in this
mean and malicious business is
very far beyond comprehension, but
in the course of time when those
stereotyped fools die out (here wil
he uone of it, and the peace That 1-
desired will cometo the country.Thf
South will surely refuse to adopt a!
feuch books and will use her oar
histories. It is business now pure
and simple.
