MAN EATERS.
j A School Of 37 Man Eating Sharks In The
Ogeechee River At The Mouth of Ruck-
Head Creek-
Millen, Ga., Feb. 20th, 1901 —
i (Special.)-It is not what Mrs. Na-
j tion is doing for“the g(ass”out West
; or what Brother Sam Jones has to
say about tbe old gal that is agitat
ing the people in this section. But
SHARKS!!!!
The Boer war, the death of Queen
Victoria, the ship subsidy bill, the
Chinese Aim flam,bait digging,don’t
i in the least interest the citizens
! here, it’s sharks. They dream of
shark- 1 , some of the old “suckers”
look like sharks, everybody has a
sharky expression, by sharks they
are sharked—therefore they are
sbarki.-hly sharkful.
Last Friday Mr. Bug Lane, the
keeper of the bridge, heard one of
his hogs squeal that was swimming
the river, he soon found the cause.
This school of 27 sharks had attack-
; ed the hog he had and tore her to
j pieces, and fought over her like so
I many bull dogs, it was not long be
fore another hog was crossing and
they ate him quicker than I can
write it, aud up to this writing they
have devoured 31 hogs. The sharks
have caused consternation among
the fishers.they have torn up all the
shad and sucker nets, and run all
the old black sucker fishing sisters
out of the swamp. A boy fisher by
the name of Auly had a close shave.
He came down in a very small boat
they went for him, threw his boat
against a big log—he jumped to the
log, when one of the sharks sprung
at him, and went over the log and
got penned and was killed by Mr.
Lane with an axe.- Mr. Lane then
shot one with a heavy load of buck
shot and blooded him, and he was
at once attacked by the others and
t'<rn to pieces. This has brought out
all the shot guns, rifles, pistols, and
cannons that are in miles of the
place, aod from the continued bom
bardment one would think that a
war had come, or ‘hell had broke
loose in Georgia.”
No doubt the cause of these sharks
coming is the continued high water
which has brought thousands of
shad up the river, and they are
having a feast on them, and a hog
occasionally by a way of change and
a coon fisher where ever they can,
just to keep up their rep. as man
eaters.’
There is no small pox here but
the town is loaded down with
sharks. Millen is just a little ahead
of any town In Georgia, in any
shape, size or style. There is a pe
tition now in circulation asking our
Georgia congressmen and senators
to get the appropriation to have the
Ogeechee river opened up as we
will not stop short of direct trade
with the whole entire world and a
wireless telegraph station to the
planet Mars. Yours truly. R T.
Hill is.
