In respect, to the comfort of the

will also be lighted.
The water for drinking purposes
and family use will come from ar
tesian wells for which Millen is al-
already famous, and every operator
will have a suoply as pure as from
mountain streams. Messrs. Berry
and Lloyd are now boring a six
inch well. By the water supply
with the situation of the mill on a
rise much above the surroundings,
and other sanitary arrangement?,
it is expected to make the place as
healthy as any place in the state.
A complete sewerage system for the
grounds carries off all impurities
that collect about the mill. This of
itself is a great health guaranty.
In a few weeks the machinery
will start and its busy hum will in
stil additional life into this already
lively place. When finished the
whole mill costs about $160,000
but with its up-to-date machin

tory success is almost guaranteed
to the enterprise. The Citizen
wishes it all the success it deserves,
which calls for a full measure.

The fact that the female canker-

from the ground to the branches of the
trees in order to lay their eggs gives us
an excellent means of fighting them.
If we can head them off and prevent
them from crawling up the trunks cf

“Why do I draw my illustrations
from the life of women rather than
men? Simply for the reason that
In Christian lands, and nowhere

There is nothing truer than this;
and if our young women as well as
older ones would use their influence
no drunken or Immoral man would
infest clean social intercourse. Men
who defy society and decency should
be driven into social (s’racism. A
few prominent examples of such os
tracism would very soon lessen their

To accomplish this end various devices
have been tried, such as banding the
tree with paper and on this spreading
printers’ ink or caterpillar lime or any
thing sticky enough to prevent the cat
erpillars from crawling up. Perhaps
the best band is made of cotton bat
ting. A strip of this is wound around
a tree trunk and fastened securely by
a string at or below the middle. The
upper end is now turned down, form
ing a loose, fluffy mass, in which the
insects get entangled and die. This
method has one disadvantage. The
bands have to be kept on from the last
of October until spring is well advanc
ed and must he renewed after rains or
when the cotton loses its fluffy nature.
As the worms food upon apple, elm,
cherry and some other trees precau
tions must be taken to prevent them
from breeding on these trees and again
infesting the fruit trees. * v
The best method of overcoming these
pests, however, is by spraying. They
readily yield to a spray of one of the
arsenites (see chapter on insecticides),
which should be applied early as soon
as any worms are seen, even before
blooming, but never during the period
of bloom. It may be necessary to re
peat the spraying, but this method is
by far the cheapest and most satisfac
tory.

FALL CANKERWORM.
It* I,Ife History and tlie Methods In
Vogrne For Fighting; it.
Very destructive insects are the cau-
kerworms. Though easy to conquer if
properly treated, the annual loss due to
their depredations is very considerable,
and it would seem that many persons
have yet to learn the methods cf fight
ing this old lime pest. There are two
species cf c-anker'worms more or less
common wherever apples are raised,
the fall eankerworm and the spring
canker-worm. The fall worm is per
haps the mote common. It is a single
brooded insect, which lays its eggs ei
ther late in the autumn or early in
spring. The egg hatches out a small
loopworm that grows to the length of
nearly an inch. It varies greatly In
color, but is usually gray or almost
black, striped with yellowish or green
ish. Being a measuring worm, it has
less than tlie ordinary’ number of legs,
six true legs near the head and four
false legs near the posterior extremity,
