Notes and Sews.
It has been particularly noted at the
Rhode Island station that where
greater amount of nitrate of soda has
been applied annually to grass land
sown with clover, red top and timothy
a far"greater proportion of the crop
consisted of timothy than where iess of
it was applied or than where it was
omitted.
The heads but uot the stems of sun
flowers are made into silage.
In growing onions in Bermuda the
land is enriched with well rotted cow
or pig manure. The seed is sown in
September and the crop harvested from
January to May. A rigid system of in
spection covers all shipments to the
United States.
This country has come to be without
a peer in tiie manufacture or agricul
tural implements and machines both
as to quality and number.
Under the recent act for the protec
tion of game animals and birds among
birds the most general prohibition is
that against the shipment of quail. All
but 12 of the states prohibit export of
these birds. Among the exceptions are
seven southern states, Montana and
North Dakota, but in Montana the' sale
and in North Dakota the killing of
quail arc at present unlawful.
The approaching Argentina wheat
harvest, which begins with December,
will be watched with great interest, as
it figures largely in the world’s trade.
Present talk is that it will be large.
But this crop is an uncertainty till ac
tually harvested.
The making of paper from native
grasses is a new proposition.

Rye »nd Burley For Green Soiling,
Etc.
For green soiling or pasturing both
rye and barley may be sown early in
September and on a rich soil as late as
the last of Oqfober. But tlie earlier
sowings will require lighter seeding
and will yield more satisfactory re
sults, according to Georgia station ad
vice.
Barley is ordinarily confined to small,
rich lots near the barn, and when sown
early two bushels of seed well put in
will answer, but the later the sowing
the heavier should be tlie seeding, even
to as high as six bushels of seed to
the acre.
Ou large areas, as when tlie cotton
fields are to be sown for light winter
pasturage, three pecks of rye per acre
or even less may give satisfactory re
sults, but on good, rich, well prepared
soil 1Q> to 2 bushels will be more sat
isfactory. "When sown thickly, the
stems will be finer and more tender.
Barley may be plowed in with scoot
ers or pnt in with a grain drill or with
a cutaway harrow, and 1% inches cov
ering will not be too deep. But rye,
being a smaller seed and putting forth
quite a delicate plant, may easily be
covered too deeply. One inch is deep
enough.
The California lemon industry is this
year very satisfactory to the growers,
with an extended market and better
prices.

1900.—Pepsin Syrup Co., Monticeilo,
111, Dear Sirs:—For almost fifteen
years I suffered from indigestion,
and last winter thought I would
die, when my doctor, Dr. A J Insu
rance of this place, advised me to j
try Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin, j
which I did, and two bottles cured !
me. It not only relieved me, but it j
cured me so that I have not been j
troubled since. If any one should
offer me $500 for the good Syrup
Pepsin has done me I would not
think of taking it. No one can take
your medicine without being con
vinced of its more than wonderful
cures. I recommend it to all my
friends as a laxitive and stomach
peme'dy. Yours with gratitude, Mrs.
