The Survival of the Fittest.
-WAYNESBORO, GA„ JUNE29, 190).
The new party of Kansas seeuis
to be only another variety of the
regular weekly Kansas freak.
That old side-whiskered smiler
and Ang!o-mani3C Depew is sill!
talking of a third term-for tlm
sake of “conspieuosify.”
Atlanta seems to he a center of
attraction for negro desporadoes
and black criminals of the worse
kind who deserve hanging.
Walter Whitman is declared to
be the only great American poet
This judgment may give Rui Kip a
chance over Shakespeare and Mil-
ton.
It is to be hoped that Augusta
will not catch at any more of those
small technicalities to win 'a game
She muffed that one awfully in the
last Augusta game with Wayues-
boro, in Augusta, in that famous 9th
inning.
One evidence of the rapid transit
of life in America and how people
have grown to condense business
(and pleasure too), is the relegation
of tho long winded editorial for 111
pithy paragraph. It is multurn in
parvo all along the lioe.
We have had it in our head for
many a day that tw'O men in the
United States could lead the Dem
ocratic party safely and surely to
victory and the country back to
original principles. One is Grover
Cleveland and the other Henry G
Turner.
Jno. Wannamaker is an honest
Republican but he has some of the
toughest political brethren in Phil
adelphia to keep straight ihat man
kind ever tackled. It is a hard job
to keep up the moral standard of a
Philadelphia Republican and John
needs sympathy.
Eddy-seven decorated lately 3,000
returned soldiers from South Afri
ca. With the exception of those
that the Boers planted there in the
Sandy soil of the veldt9, Eddy will
have the residue of the 350,000 (sent
there to put dowu the 50.000) to de
corate at some future day.
There seems to be a great show
of human nature among the Japa
nese. Whenever a Caesar is around
a Brutus lingers near. The assas
sination of Toru for the good of the
country has a real semblance of
those old days when folks killed
those in pow T er, not that Caesar was
loved less, but Rome w T as loved
more.
The great tempest in a tea pot
over the Park’s refusal to pay out
money not authorized by the con
stitution is passed. Yellow journal
ism may have made a few dimes
more out of it and that is about all.
The governor will get the money in
Georgia and the teachers will be
paid what the legislature failed to
provide for them.
The British Adoption of Weyler-
lsm in Africa to defeat the Boers is
the culmination of savage warfare,
really it is worse than savage for
no savages have yet penned wom
en and children ud to die with star
vation and disease by slow deaths.
It is a crime against all humanity
that other national powers of the
earth are two cowardly to prevent,
as Great Britain does not happen to
be as weak as Spain.
The capture of Aguinaldo furnish
es food (rather material) for discus
sion concerning the ethics of war
in the present age. Some seem to
think yet it was treachery past ail
excuse when the foliowers of the
Filipino chief were bribed to be
tray him. It is foolish to think the
old adges that, “All is fair in love
and war” and “All is well that ends
well” are not of force. There is
nothing bad, so it appears, in shoot
ing civilization into savages wh >
are too wild to give it to by hypo-
derm ic injections.
The London Times speaking of
the late U. S. Supreme court decis
ion on the constitution and flag,
says in a sentence.
‘•Neither are they (us) prepared
to force republican institutions up
on people totally unfitted for them,
or to welcome at Washiagto i batch-,
es of black and yellow senators:
They mean to be free to do as oth-r
countries have done in like circum
stances.”
The British can judge from their
stand point very correctly Knowine
that we are of the same distinguish
ed family of robbers. Constitutions
have seldom, if ever, followed con
quering flags and as we are received
now among the greatest of conquei-
ing theives, constitutions and criti
cisms are not at all in Uncle Sam’s
way.
BUSINESS SENSE.
tVe have never had the slightest
sympathy, and perhaps will never
have, with those Southern business
conventions that go off North to
And a meeting place and pose be
fore an unsympathetic population
who have always had 75 per cent,
more contempt for the South than
admiration. Especially doe3 this
apply to Philadelphia, whose busi
ness people have scorned even the
venture of making money from
Southern sources.
Why do we forever prate and
boast about Southern energy aud
enterprise building up waste places,
aud ihen go North to grovel at the
feet of capitalist for the use of their
money that has time and again
supped the South into bankruptcy.
It i3 rather a humiliating sight to
b: hold such spectacles Does mon
ey ever come from it to benefit us;
In fact is there a cent iu it aDy
way.
Why should Southern business
men think they can go up over the
line in a pretentious convention
and with big speeches tell northern
business men something about the
South they did not know?
There would be a show of sense
in going there to learn something
of this section and its resources; bui
what our people can tell northern
capitalists of places here to put cap
ital would be fine material for com
edy
This invitation to the capitalist to
come down and be wish us reminds
thoughtful people of that kindly
welcome the owl in his wisdom ex
tended to the porcupine.
BOOKS AND BOOKS.
Those who have read the
late
batch of American novels ‘ of note,”
including Hugh Wynne, Richard
Carvel, etc., not omitting Alice cf
old Vincennes, have observed of
course wiih w'hat punctuality the
duels with rapiers come on the
scenes. Maurice Thompson, hav
ing the last call, so to speak, has
out done the whole batch by dis
carding love sick, punctilious irras-
cible young courting daodies as his
best fencers, and has constructed
them out of hi3 heroine and a very
soft spoken, smiling Jesuit priest.
So far this is singular and peculiar
at once.

WINE OF CARDUI

lion suffering women who were on their
way to premature graves. Mrs. Mitchell
was fast declining in health, when Wine
of Cardui performed a “wonderful cure”
in her ease. She suffered with the ago

and profuse menstruation. The weekly
appearance of the mensesfor two months
sapped her vitality until she was a phys-
ical wreck. Her nervous system gave
way. Then came tho trial of Wine of

experience ought to commend Wine of

burning eloquence.
