HIDEOUS CONSPIRACY
To Defraud Aletropolitan Insurance
Company at Louisville.
Louisville, Nov. 12.—Through the
efforts of nearly the entire detective
force of Louisville and Jeffersonville
the details or the conspiracy of Nowell
O. Rathbuu to defraud t he Metropolitan
Insurance company, which ended in the
mysterious murder at the Fails Gity
hotel in Jeffersonville are being brought
our.
The more the case is developed the
more hideous is the conspiracy evolved
by Rathbuu. He admits rhat after se
curing a corpse and dressing it in his
own clothes he intended to set fire to
the hotel and burn it down so that the
body of the dead man coaid be identi
fied .vs that of himself.
Having, as they believe, established
the identity of the murdered man, the
detectives are busy developing the case
against Rathbun. He has told several
stories, but the one that he stuck to the
longest, and which he still insists is
true, is that he formed the conspiracy
in conjunction with a deserter from the
regular army by the name of Blanchard.
He states that he and Blanchard met
here by agreement and discussed the de
tails of the plot. It was, of course, nec
essary first to secure a corpse, and
Blanchard agreed to provide the corpse
if Rathbun would set fire to the build
ing after the corpse was prepared.

It is asserted that Jeffries now tips
the scales at 208}^ pounds. He believes
he can fight best at about 207 pounds.
His trainer, Billy Delaney, is of a differ
ent opinion. He would rather have his
protege enter the ring weighing about
215 or 217 pounds, as he knows that in
the course oi a heated battle that weight
counts.
With a blow of his fist, while train
ing, Jeffries burst a punching bag. It
was done with one • of the left swings,
which won for the boilermaker the glory
of the world’s championship.
Gus Ruhlin’s weight is 201 pounds.
He weighed 211 pounds when he began
training. Biilv Madden is not satisfied
with the truth of the report that Jeffries
only weighs 210 pounds. He says he is
willing to wager chat the champion will
tip the beam close to 225 pounds.
Ruhiin is said to have a new and effec
tive blow which he will attempt to use
during the contest.
The Clergymen’s association has
adopted resolutions against the fight,
Some of its members have asked the
city officials to stop it and have been
politely informed that the police will
doubtless interfere if the sparring
match should develop into a brutal
prizefight.
The mayor has given notice that he
will sign the bill today, after which de
