GEORGIA’S TAXABLE PROPERTY.
Returns Show Increase of Aboul
Twelve Million Dollars. ..
Atlanta, Aug. 4. —The tax returns
91 counties of the state have been re
ceived at the comptroller general s of
fice. Of this number 55 show an in
crease in the returns, while 36 have
decreased. The total amount of in
crease is $4,964,131, and the decrease
is $1,438,814, showing a net gain ol
$3,525,317 in the returns of general
property received so far.
There are yet 46 counties to be
heard from, including all of the couu
ties containing the large cities, with
the exception of Muscogee. The coun
ties containing the large cities almost ;
always show an increase in taxable j
property every year. Judging by the 1
present returns, however, it may be
predicted that the returns of general
property will show an increase of
something like $6,000,000 or more,
Good increases are expected from Ful
ton, Chatham, Bibb, Richmond, Floyd
and other counties, as the value of
city property has been on the upward
trend.
The returns of railroad, telegraph,
telephone and express companies,
which are, by law, made directly to
the comptroller general, will show
about the same increase this year as
last, or about $5,000,000 to $6,000,000.
This will make the total net increase
of property values in Georgia this
year something like $10,000,000 to $12,-
000,000, which is about $12,000,000 less
than last year’s increase.
The increase in general taxable
property last year was about $17,000,-
000, and together with the railroads,
etc., the net gain for 1901 amounted
to more than $22,000,000.
GIGANTIC REAL ESTATE DEAL.
Strip of Land In Atianta Is sold For
$200,000.
Atlanta, Aug. 2. —The largest and
most significant real estate deal thfet
has ever been consummated in the city
of Atlanta was closed a few days ago
when the firm of G. W. Adair sold to
a local syndicate all of the property in
the city and in Fulton county belong
ing to the Atlanta Real Estate com
pany for the handsome sum of $200,-
000 in cash.
This is the largest single sale of
Atlanta dirt that has taken place
since there was any to be sold in this
immediate vicinity. The next largest
sale that occurred at one time was
made when the James bank building
and property was sold to the Cental y
company for $160,000.
The transfer of the property is sig
nificant of the fact that residence
building property is in greater demand
in Atlanta at this time than ever be
fore in the history of the city. With
the transfer of the property to this lo
cal colnpany it will mean the placing
on the market in the near future some
of ,the most desirable rt idence prop
erty in the city, property that has been
lying idle for 30 years.
TRAGEDY AT FORT VALLEY.
Gun, Accidentally Discharged, Kills
Little Girl.
Fort Valley, Ga., Aug. 5. —A shock
ing tragedy at this place was the re
sult of handling a gun supposed to
be unloaded.
Robert Flournoy, a lad about 10
years of age, a son of Captain Robert
Flournoy, passenger conductor on the
Georgia Southern and Florida rail
road, decided to clean up his shotgun,
and taking it down from the rack with
that intention, proceeded to do it,
when it was suddenly discharged and
the young lad was horrified to see his
pretty little 5-year-old sister, Mar
guerite, fall over with one side of her
face and head blown off and her brains
oozing out from the terrible gaping
wound.
Little Marguerite, it seems, was not
more than 2 feet from the muzzle of
the gun, engaged in some childish
game, when the report was heard and
her lite was forfeited. Her death
was instantaneous.
The boy is almost crazed with grief
over the unfortunate affair.
Ends Her Life With Acid.
Atlanta, Aug. 6.—With a swallow ol
carbolic acid Mrs. Mary Franklin end
ed her life this morning shortly be
fore 1 o’clock at her residence, 13S
Pulliam street. She was alone in her
bedroom when she took the poison,
and when found was fast becoming
unconscious. Her children gathered
about her and she died in the arms of
one of her sons ten minutes after it
was known she had taken the deadly
poison. Mrs. Franklin had been griev
ing for her husband, Max Franklin,
who died four months ago. Since
her husband’s death her mind had
been deranged, it is said.

The people- have had a surfeit o!
oratory already, and now the agony
will be piled on. for there are aboul
fifty candidates in each of the 41 conn
ties seeking for county offices. They
traverse the counties even more thor
oughly than the other parries do tin
state at large. In one couirty 20 bar
becues are advertised in the weekly
papers. Of the 95,000 voters in this
state, fully 2,000 are candidates this
year.
’FRISCO ROAD WANTS CENTRAL.
Railway Deal May Link South to
Great Northwest.
New York, Aug. 5. —The Evening
Post says: Very- positive state
ments were made today that negotia
tions are pending for the acquisition
of the Georgia Central system by the
St. Louis and San Francisco which
last week, secured the Chicago and
Eastern Illinois and which during the
last year, has made notable progress
in expansion. These reports were
practically confirmed, so far as re
gards the statement that negotiations
with this purpose in view have been
under way. They are not, however,
complete.
From the same authority, a denial
was obtained of the reports of a grand
merger of all southern railroads.
Preparing to Build Road.
Birmingham, Ala., Aug. 2. —The
Donelson Construction company, who
have tne contract to build the East
ern Railway of Alabama from Talla
dega to Pyriton, in Clay county, are
sending a big force of men and road
building apparatus to the right of way
and the road will be pushed. More
than 160 negroes have been sent to
the scene, while a large amount of
stock and scrapers were carried over
the first of the week. The 10 miles
to be constructed by this company
will be through a rough section. The
road has the pyrite beds of Alabama
as the objective point.
Hot Political Fight On.
Athens, Ala., Aug. 2. —The warmest
fight is on in this section that was
ever waged politically and the Democ
racy is enthused as it has not been
for many years. Everything Is turn
ed Jelksward, and the white men ol
Limestone are standing as one grand
phalanx for the constitution and its
friends. A Jelks club in this county
that has for its purpose the enrollment
of every white voter, is gathering
strength as the days go by. Every ef
fort is to be made to get a full vote
out Aug. 25.
Will Be Double Execution.
Jackson, Miss.. Aug. 5. —Mississip-
pi’s next legal hanging will be a dou
ble event, which takes place at Sum
ner, the new county seat of Talla
hatchie county, on Sept. 16.- The pris
oners who are to pay the penalty for
their crimes are Sam Price and Jim
Allen, both negroes. Price killed
another negro wfth a pocketknife or.
the Hitt plantation in 1890. Allen
murdered a companion during a quar
rel in a levee camp several months
ago.
To Sell Gas Plant.
Talladega, Ala., A-ug. 2. —At a meet
ing of the board of mayor and aider
men of Talladega it was voted to sell
the gas plant of this city to the Tal
ladega company. The consideration
is to be $20,000. The council also
agreed to make a contact with the
new light company to light the streets
of the city at an annual rental of SGO
for each 2,000 candle power and SBO
for each 1,200 candle light.
Texas Roads Resume Traffic.
Dallas, Tex., Aug. 5. —Reports from
the Texas Pacific, Cotton Belt, Mis
souri, Kansag and Texas and Texas
and New Orleans railroad officials
show those roads to be entirely clear
from washouts and trains are run
ning regularly. The Houston an-1
Texas Central is having some trouble
on its Austin branch, but expects to
be clear within a short time.
Seale Goes With Southern.
Mobile, Ala., Aug. 5. —J. N. Seale,
superintendent of transportation for
the Mobile and Ohio, has been a
pointed to the same position with the
Southern with headquarters in Wash
ington. Mr. Seale entered the rail
road business as messenger boy on
the Mobile and Ohio in 1881.
Bloody Work of Brigands.
Salonica, European Turkey, Aug. 5.
Seven Bulgarian brigands, who were
surrounded in the village of Volka by
360 Turkish soldiers, have escaped un
injuied after having killed four sol
diers and five villagers. The bri
gands burned a considerable part of
the village.
PnttiiiK' It Gently.
“But is she pretty?’’
“Well, I don’t believe in talking
about a girl’s looks behind her back.
Her father’s worth about $20,000,000,
and they’ve taken her to Europe twice
without bringing back any titles, so
you can form your own opinion.”—Chi
cago Record-Herald.
Pritchard Not a Candidate.
Raleigh. Aug. 5. —It is now denied
that Senator Pritchard wall be the
Republican candidate for congress
from the ninth district. The impres
sion is quite general that after next
march he will be given a good federal
position, perhaps a judgeship. The
death of his wife will temporarily de
range his plans. The esteem in which
the senator is held by the people of
the western counties is shown by the
tributes paid to the memory of his
wife.
