CORPSE AT THE THROTTLE.
Death Wss Er.3ir.ecr !n Cab cf P.ovci
Blue Tia n.
Baltimore, April 27.—The reason the
locomotive hauling Royal B!.:e tra.r.
No. 525, due in this city at 1 o’cloc k.
did not give the usual signals at sev
eral of the stations after leaving Phila
delphia. was that the hand of a co.pse
was at the throttle.
Just as the heavy train pullei out
of Philadelphia J. Walter Farley, :'-e
old engineer, remarked to Fire n: an J.
B. Howard: “We will have n make
the old girl hustle this trip it ve ma r
up the lost time between he:e and
Baltimore.”
These were his last words.
The train went rurhin •; through
the night at a CO-mile at? hour clip
and it was not until five stations hoc:
been passed that, the fi.email shouted
out to h:S chief, asking him what was
the matter.
Receiving no reply. Howard went up
closer, and was horrified to see the
blood pouring from an ugly wound
on the sine of the engineer's face. Far
ley was dead.
The fireman w 1 cached the dead hand
from the throttle, and at the first sta
tion, Hayes Hill, brought the train to
a stop, and telegraphed headquarters
for an engineer.
It is believed that Fa:ley's head
came in contact with a crane or pole
through leaning tco far cut of the cab
window.
TRAGEDY IN ALABAMA.
White Man’s Throat Cut and Negro
Shot to Death.
Abbeville, Ala., April 28: —Asa re
sult of a desperate fight at close quar
ters William Stanley, a merchant liv
ing 8 miles from Abbeville, and Ben
Gilmore, a negro, are dead, tire white
man with his throat cut and the negro
pierced with a rifle ball.
The theory advanced by those who
went to the scene is that Stanley shot
the negro and was unable to get away
and was seized by him and cut to
death.
Gilmore lived four hours after being
shot, and in his ante-mortem state
ment he said that he had no idea Stan,
ley would shoot him and that when
he did he (Gilmore) crawled up to
Stanley and cut his throat.
TO DROP FAMOUS NOVEL.
"Uncle Tom's Cabin” Le't Cut of School
Libraries.
Chicago, April 25.—A dispatch to
the Chronicle from New York, says:
The woes of poor old Uncle Tom and
the pitiful death of little Eva will r.c
longer b:ing tears to the eyes of th<=
school children of New.York if they
confine their fending to the class libra
ries provided by the board of educa
tion. The board of superintendent®
has voted to drop the novel of Mrs.
Harriet Beecher Stowe from the cat a
legue. The general reason given is
that the book has served its purpose
and now only tends to revive sectional
feeling.
