GOLD NEAR WHITE HOUSE.
Yellow Metal Panned Within Sight of
Washington Monument.
Gold is mined within sight of Wash
ington monument. The heights around
the capital are really a part of the Ap
palachian system, and before the out
break of the gold fever in California
all the gold produced in the Unites]
States came out of the Appalachian
mines.
Only the ores that contained free
milling gold could be worked with tli
crude processes then known, says the
Technical World. Then, too, because
of the presence of subterranean
streams, mining could not be done at
any great depth.
Nevertheless gold mines are in prof
itable operation today in Maryland and
southwestern Virginia, and these gold
veins, badly broken and disintegrated,
are being w'orked down through the
Carolines and into Georgia and Ala
bama.
There is not a ravine or gulch in the
environs of Washington city where, if
a man dig down to the gravel and black
sand that lie over bedrock, he cannot
by panning get a color. It has not been
found in sufficient quantities to make
placer mining attractive, though many
men have washed out enough gold to
have a riug or charm made.
A few miles west of Washington a
man may see several small mines, some
in operation and some abandoned.
Great areas of gold bearing rock have
been uncovered or blocked out. Gold
is obtained, but in many instances it
has cost more to extract It than the
gold was worth.
At present there Is one mine in which
extensive operations are being carried
on, and, though the operators do not
talk for publication, the belief is gen
eral that they are making a good profit
from the mine. There are thousands
of tons of ore In sight, and if you take
a pound of the ore, crush it and wash
it a fair amount of gold Is obtained.
Much of the ore assays high, but get
ting the yellow' stuff out In paying
quantities is the problem.
CALHOUN’S RADICAL STAND.

San Francisco, Cal., May 14. —One
hundred cars, manned and guarded

were scores of acts of Individual vio

the ability of the police to put down.
President Calhoun, of the United
Railroads, said:
“I shall not take back any strik

first surrenders his union card, and
signs a contract to remain nonunion,
so long as he remains in the compa

BUSH'S QUF.ZIT INFATUATION
He Is Said Not to Have Been Jealous
of the Girl Doolittle Was to Wed,
but Strange to Say, of DoolitDe
Himself.
Atlanta, May 11. —'Charged with
sending a bomb to Miss McCarthy, at
447 East Georgia avenue, to murder
the young lady, because she r.vas
about to wed Charles Doolittle, with
whom he was infatuated, the bomb
nearly killing the girl’s mother, Fred
Bush was arraigned in the recorder’s
court Friday afternoon, and held in a
SIO,OOO bond for assault with intent to
murder.
Charlie Doolittle was also arraigned
but the case against him was dis
missed.
The case was one of the most sen
sational that has ever been heard in
any court in the city. The man who
was held under such a heavy bond
stood charged with attempting to an
nihilate a whole family and especially
a young woman, because a young
man visited the house for whom he
had for many years held a deep, and
what was believed to be an unnatur
al affection.
The case upset all records of the
kind. If Bush had been charged with
trying to blow Miss Kathryn McCar
thy into eternity with a deadly infer
nal machine, because some other
young man was about to win the
young lady from him, the affair would
have been in the proper and ordinary
channels of such tragedies; but the
evidence in the case, which was in
vestigated by the recorder Friday af
ternoon, was intended to bring out the
fact (hat Fred Bush was so deeply at
tached to Charlie Doilittle that he tried
to wreck a home and murder a house
hold, rather than become separated
from a youth with whom he had been
living for several years, and for whom
his affection was almost a mania.
Bush was born and reared in At
lanta. His father was a railroad con
ductor many years ago. He was
reared near Grant park, and not very
far from the scene of the recent ex
plosion. Llis home was near that
of Doolittle’s, and he and the boy
became friends when they were both
quite young. For a while Bush re
sided with Doolittle’s family. Eight
years ago he rented a room, and Doo
little has been rooming with him
ever since. It was his influence over
the boy that caused so much talk in
Doolittle’s family.
Withal, it 'is one of the strangest
affairs that has ever happened in At
lanta.

Americus orchardmen expect to ship
probably thirty cars of peaches this
season, principally Georgia Belles,
these escaping the AOril ’blizzard.
Orchards are in good condition, and

The Telephone Voice.
“Next to knowing how I look,” said
the busy woman. “I'd like to know
how my voice sounds over the tele
phone. Ia: quite sure it doe n't sound
natural. Nobody else’s does. Most
people keep their telephone voice pack
ed away with their company manners.
It is so different from the tones of or
dinary use that it is hardly recogniz
able. Take our manager’s voice, for
example. In general conversation his
voice is so heavy that it fairly makes
the furniture rattle, but -when he gets
busy at the telephone, especially if
there happens to lie a woman at the
other end of the wire, he assumes so
many vocal graces that you would
think Chesterfield himself was at the
phone. Even girls—and they talk
more naturally than men employ
many strange inflections, so it stands
to reason that I must do the same.”—
