TENDERED RESIGNATION.
Dr. Wills Would Not Serve on Tem
perance Committee.
Columbus, 0., May 18. —The-first
Indication in the general .Presbyteri
an assembly of the smouldering but
threatening question of temperance,
came Saturday when Dr. David Wills,
Jr., of Oswego, N. Y., appointed
Friday by Dr. William H. Roberts,
moderator, handed in his resignation
with an absolute refusal to serve on
this committee. He gave as his rea
son that he did not care to be at the
head of a commitiee which will be the
bone of contention and the target for
the shafts of those opposed to the re
port .
When interviewed later at the
Southern hotel on his resignation,
however, Dr. Wills said that he re
signed because of reasons that he did
not care to discuss.
“It was not because of the merits
of the case,,” he declared. He admit
ted, however, that he did not come
here to quarrel.
The report of the conventom on in
terstate temperance will probably be
made next Friday, but the discussion
of the temperance question will be
lively up to that time. Professor
Scanlon, of Pittsburg, is directing the
committee work. There is strong op
position to the anti-saloon league,
many commissioners declaring thai
they will not vote to continue tne
work of this league. Many believe
that the young and old people’s soci
eties should take up the work cf the
anti-saloon league within the church.
The friends of the league among the
commissioners are Hatiy against the
church’s coming out as not in favor
of the league within the church. The
friends of the league among the com
missioners are flatly against tne
church’s coming out as noi in favor of
the league. They are giving many
reasons why the league should be sup
ported.

Another Week May Elapse Before the
Jury Box Is Filled.
Boise, Idaho, May IS. —With five

srr.ali prospects of a jury being com

Monday will see the beginning of
the second full week of the jury-get

case, it is even likely that the third
week will be entered, before the jury
box is full, and the case begins in
earnest.
The storm raised over the publisn

seems to have almost subsided.

* Editor Fined sllO.
Lisbon, May 20. An interesting
case to test the validity of the new
press law, just resulted in the editor
of O’Mundo being convicted and fined
sllO. The paper to test the law,
published an article that the prime
minister was insane. Its proprietors
- engaged well known counsel, and was
prepared to push the case to the most
ridiculous extent, but the court would
allow no discussion of the premier’s
mental condition. In this respect,
the test was a faily.re, but it is be
lieved that the agitation will ulti
mately result in the repeal of the ob
noxious statute. Under its provision?
a committee of public prosecutors is
entrusted with arbitrary powers of
censorship over every newspaper in
Portugal.
