SHIP WRECKED IN MID OCEAN
Only a Crumb of Bread and a Spoon
ful of Water a Day for Each Man.
They Were Rescued When at the
Very Door of Death.
New York, May 20. —Another tala
of the s<.a having to do with the hor
ror of shipwreck in mid-ocean was re
lated Sunday by Captain Clarendon
Maxwell, who, with his crew of six
men of the schooner Evrett Webster,
arrived here on the steamer Philadel
phia. At the same time the mystery
surrounding the derelict, schooner
which had been reported by almost
every Atlantic liner for the past
mouth as lying in the main waterway,
a serious menace to navigation, was
explained.
The Webster, a three-masted ves
sel, belonging to Haldt & Cummins,
of Philadelphia, left Wilmington, N.
on March 31, bound for Phila
delphia. When off cape Hatteras she
ran in;o a series o>f heavy gales, and
The deck load was washed away, and
on the third day oil , sprang a leak,
The deck load was washed away, and
Captain Maxwell ordered all the crew
to tne pumps, but constant work so
exhausted them that their hands were
raw and swollen to more Than twice
the normal size. Filially the cap
tain gathered his men In the stern
of his ship, tne only part above the
water, and a council was held. It
was found that they had only a barrel
of biscuits and a gallon jar of water
left of their stores.
The fury of the storm had increas
ed and the waves constahtiy broke
over the men, and they were obliged
to lash themselves fast. Westerly
gales blew' the schooner out to sea,
tar from the regular track of ships,
and to add to their desperate condi
tion, a wave which swept over the
stern, mpset the biscuit barrel and all
but a few of the biscuits were lost.
For six days the men lived on a por
tion of a biscuit each and a spoonful
of water each day.
On April 13 a vessel bore down up
on tne n. The members of the crew
were delirious, but Captain Maxwell
etood up and taking off his coat,
waved it frantically above nl§ head.
It was the PTeuch bark Quevilly,
Captain LaDonne, from Philadelphia
to Rouen, Prance.
The bark lowered a boat and al
though high seas made the work ex
tremely dangerous tne shipwrecked
men were rescued.
For a week they were nursed by
the crew of the French bark. Arriv
ing at Rouen they were taken in
charge by the American consul who
sent, them to Southampton, where
they boarded the Philadelphia.
Captain Maxwell said that before
abandoning his vessel he set fire to
her.
The Elegant Mrs. Adams.
An old Washington lady used to tell
with delight of an occasion on which
she went, with a kinswoman, to dine
with Mr. and Mrs. John Quincy Ad
ams. The table was beautifully set in
the fashion of the time, and at Mr.
Adams’ place lay a four tined silver
fork. The other persons at table had
merely the two pronged fork then in
use. Mrs. Adams apologized for her
husband’s little eccentricity, saying
that in his long sojourn in France lie
had acquired the habit of eating with
hts fork, a habit of which he had been
unable to break himself. “And. my
dear.” the old lady used to Ray, with a
twinkle In her eye, “the elegant Mrs.
Adams and the rest of use ate with a
knife.”

HAVE TO FIGHT GUATEMALA
It Is Said Zelaya Wants to Over
throw Existing Government in Guat
emala and San Salvador —Troublous
Times Brewing for Central America
City of Mexico, May 21. —Mexican
troops are being removed to the Guat
emalan frontier. This information
has reached the capitol in a private
telegram. The troops are being con
veyed over the Pan-American Rail
road. In what numbers or for what
purpose these soldiers are being mov
ed southward is not known outside
of official circles.
It is said that the transferrence of
these troops may simply be the car
rying out of previous orders Issued
by the war department in pursuance
of a plan of mobilization which car
ries with it no special significance. It
was learned, however, that the war
department had countermanded the
order directing the Mexican gunboat
Tampico to proceed to the port of San
Jose de Guatemala and there take on
board Senor Gamboa, the Mexican
minister to Guatemala, who was to
have gone to San Salvador. The
Tampico is still in the harbor at Sa
lina Cruz, and the Mexican minister
is still in Guatemala City.
An American business man now’ in
the city who arrived from San Salva
dor a few days ago, says it is only a
question of time when President Fi
gueroa of Salvador will be confronted
with a formidable revolution. This
authority says conditions in the latter
republic are raptdly approaching the
chaotic condition of affairs now exist
ing in Gautemala. Figueroa has scu
ceeded in blocking three incipent rev
olutions and as a result Is undiscrim
inated throwing suspects in jail.
These unexpecied developments
have for the time being checked the
plan of the men who are organizing
the revolution against Cabrera. They
depend absolutely on the aid of Pres
ident Zelaya c-f Nicaragua. The rev
olutionary general, Toledo, is now’ in
Managua, capital of Nicaragua. As
soon as President Zelaya believes the
time ripe, it is reported, he will send
soldiers and equipment to General To
ledo for the attack on Cabrera. Ze*
laya, htrwever, will not move until
he is sure of the support of Honduras
and Salvador. In the former repub
lic he has his hands full in endeav
oring to restore order and render
permanent the tenure of office of
President Davila. Open war is be
ing engaged in in Honduras among
political factions, each led by a pres
idential aspirant, While many beliew
the threatened revolution in Salvador
is secretly backed by Zelaya, whe
wishes to name a successor to Press
dent Figueroa, all are agreed tha‘
the troubles of the Central American
republic are as yet in their incipi
ency.
How Quails Are Caught.
When frightened a quail will alwa;
hold his head up. This fact is. alway
taken advantage of by trappers, an
vast numbers of them are caught b;
the simplest of means. All that if
necessary Is a box with an opening
through which the birds can pass.
Trail them into the box witli corn, and
when once in the box they will never
get out, because the hole being at the
bottom they will look up and never
rcc it. Another characteristic of quails
assists the trappers—they will all fol
low their leader, and when he enters
the box the entire covey is caught.

Death of Sir Benjamin Baker.
New York, May 20.*— A dispatch
from London announces the death Of
Sir Benjamin Baker, one of the
world’s greatest engineers.’ It was
he who invented the pneumatic shield
which has rendered so much assist
ance in tunnelling under rivers. The
late engineering works by which he
will be remhered are the Froth
Bridge in Scotland and the Assouan
dam. Eiffel, the French engineer,
declared the former “the greatest
contraction in the world. It is 2,756
yards long and cost $15,000,000. It
is built on the cantilever principle,
and its main spans are each 100 feet
longer than the spans of the Brooklyn
bridge. The Assouan da.m also cost
$15,000,000. It Is a mile and a
quarter long, and raises the level of
the Nile 67 feet. j
Hypodermic injection was discovered

most familiar drug so used. But the
variety of drugs is very great, and
there are numerous cases in which life
would certainly be lost if there was no
way of medicating the patient except
through the mouth.
